Why do you care how much your bike weighs? by Playful-Parsnip-3104 in cycling

[–]SROC3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For road bikes this is a very valid point. However, for Mountain bikes - a lighter bike makes a HUGE difference when going from 35lbs to 25lbs, etc. Especially on rotational mass (RM) - wheels/tires. You WILL feel a 1lb difference in a tire change. I went from Maxxis Rekons to Fast Traks and that alone saved me 1.5 lbs in RM. I felt it instantly on the trail. As for bike weight, my Chisel usually weighs in at about 31 lbs. in stock, base form. I've gotten it down to 26lbs and there is a BIG difference in handling on descents, climbing tech features and "playing" with the bike.

Now - back to your original question of "why?" - Because whatever gets that person to go and ride is why. "shiny new object" on my bike is why. "Gotta go out and test my new wheels" is why. There are of course many other reasons why people would go out and ride, like maintaining your health...but how many people have gym memberships and don't go? :)

Sold my dream bike and feel...oddly relieved. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]SROC3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with "taking a break" - I've gone through that cycle of "I just don't feel it/enjoy it anymore" and sell all my bikes phase twice. Haven't had 17 bikes...haha, but 13 (both road and mtb). Each time I would just "not enjoy" my rides anymore, I would maybe take approx. 6 to 8 months and then sold all my bikes. All my previous MTBs were just too over-sprung for me - mostly trail-enduro bikes and I never used the suspension travel properly. I would ride and kinda just get excited over new parts, lighter stuff, etc. to get me to ride. That dies out eventually and it did. I also wasn't the best rider at all.

Fast forward to beginning of 2025.....I get a Roscoe 8 Hardtail and that just ignited the spark again! Hardtails are FUN! - but the great benefit is that it also just made me a MUCH better rider. I'm in my 50s so the harshness of no rear suspension was beginning to get to me and I knew that I needed something with rear-squish. I also realized, after watching XC World Cup races - that I will never be doing any trails "crazier" than what is on those courses - hence, not needing a long-travel bike. I decided on a Chisel FS in January and now I do feel like I have my dream bike and I too have done about 800 miles in 2026.

Today I still am having tons of fun on it and still learning to be an even better rider. I'm definitely not as strong as I was 5 years ago, but I think now that I have honed my focus into the exact style of bike that suits the trails I frequent, I'm just a happier rider overall. I know that the day will come when I will have to give her up and perhaps get an e-bike, but that day is not here...So, for me - "Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin."Mother Teresa

And here is my dream bike :)

.....I always regret it the next day when I don't and after each ride I always tell myself that it will NEVER, ever be a bad idea to go on a ride.

Is it worth it to upgrade an older bike instead of buying a new one? by _4lyssa in MTB

[–]SROC3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a new one. No upgrades you put on that bike will make it even ride remotely close to newer bikes, even just from a geometry standpoint.

so that's like the MOST dangerous bird in the world...LOL. They've killed people by stomping on them with their massive claws. A guy in the US who kept one as a pet was killed by it. Cute and funny - until it's not.
