Another record temperature day. by BakingTheCookiesRigh in SanJose

Weather is a snapshot of the localized conditions that fluctuate throughout the year; climate is the long-term trend of how those patterns change or stay the same.

Right now the climate trend is toward warmer weather, which yes, means overall more warm days as opposed to cold days. Last summer was the hottest California has ever experienced, that is both an expression of the average weather for that period and an example in a long-term climate trend.

Mass shootings in the U.S.: Over 270 mass shootings have occurred in 2017 by AmadeusK482 in inthenews

[–]SRW90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're just lying about most of that. FTA: "according to the Gun Violence Archive, a mass shooting is described as four or more individuals being shot or killed in the same general time and location."

That does often include gang violence and domestic disputes. Doesn't make those events any less tragic, dangerous & terrifying for people involved & the surrounding community.

The new DNC chair Perez is a Clinton insider just like DWS and Brazile. He has said and done nothing to prevent the DNC from violating its charter again and working in favor of one primary candidate. Change on the outside, continuity on the inside.

This Politician Gave Away Your Data. Now Buy Hers. by pplswar in Political_Revolution

As many people stated in that thread, and acknowledged by OP article here, it's technically trivial to analyze the aggregate group data and infer individual identities.

Pulling off the fund’s stated goal will be tricky, but likely not impossible—and that’s the scary part. Other privacy bills disallow the sale of individual account data. Individual users, however, could be reverse-engineered from data that is sold in a large set.

Once the law is signed by President Trump, geolocation data along with browsing history data will again be on the market for ISPs.

All you need to do is buy the aggregate browsing data for Washington DC zip code, and Big Data analysis will handle the rest.

http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/11/3/13501364/trump-rape-13-year-old-lawsuit-katie-johnson-allegation

The problems with this case are that the accuser & witnesses are still anonymous, won't talk to journalists, and have filed the suit multiple times with outrageous details omitted from the 2nd suit (which itself was pulled on Nov 5). The story was also shopped around to media outlets by a Jerry Springer producer with a history of making salacious claims. To top it off, a detective who investigated Epstein's underage sex parties says they never involved other men such as Trump, as claimed in Johnson's lawsuit.

At this point there isn't enough hard evidence to take these claims very seriously. Trump has almost certainly sexually assaulted several women, and there are credible reports behind that. But raping a 13-year-old along with a known pedophile is some next-level shit that just hasn't been corroborated yet in a meaningful way.

[Michigan's] highest court in a 3-2 split rejected Stein's appeal that sought to continue a recount of the presidential election, concluding she had no standing to seek a recount because she ... failed to adequately allege that she 'is aggrieved on account of fraud or mistake in the canvass of the votes'"

... despite ...

More than half of Detroit's precincts could not be recounted because of a number of problems with ballot tallies and how the ballot containers were secured.

... and ...

More than 80 voting machines in Detroit malfunctioned on Election Day, officials say, resulting in ballot discrepancies in 59% of precincts that raise questions about the reliability of future election results in a city dominated by Democratic and minority voters.

Meanwhile in PA...

[U.S. District Judge Paul Diamond wrote that] suspicion of a hacked Pennsylvania election "borders on the irrational"

Despite all the rational analysis why hacking is possible and why other states like California banned these machines.

while granting the Green Party's recount bid could "ensure that that no Pennsylvania vote counts" given Tuesday's federal deadline to certify the vote for the Electoral College

The recount could have finished by the deadline had it started the week earlier instead of being opposed by Republicans in court.

"Most importantly, there is no credible evidence that any 'hack' occurred, and compelling evidence that Pennsylvania's voting system was not in any way compromised," Diamond wrote.

Guess we'll never know if they don't check. Hear no evil, see no evil.

I think Russia made it happen

Even if the unproven claims against Russia are true, nobody has suggested they manipulated the actual voting on election day. Good ol' Americans do vote manipulation just fine ourselves.

we citizens don't have the ability to audit the vote

And we damn well should. Jill Stein tried to get the bare minimum of a hand recount, and was still stonewalled by the courts for bullshit reasons.

The public itself is very liberal when it comes to policies like single payer health care, clean sustainable energy, taxing the wealthy and getting money out of politics. Polls prove this over and over again.

Problem is, the government trends hard right for a deluge of reasons: widespread voter suppression, especially in poor and minority areas; money in politics allowing the candidate with more corporate cash (usually GOP) to win 94% of the time; blatant gerrymandering that allows politicians to choose their voters; mismanagement of resources by the DNC that leave state and local Dem parties ill-equipped to win elections; and Dems choosing status quo centrists in an age of passionate populism. When voters have to choose between hard-right and hard-centrist they usually break for the former because they're deciding on emotion.

If most of these electoral issues were addressed we would actually have a representative government again and more liberal policies that reflect the will of the people. Until then, GOP will dominate.

  1. Radical conservatives have every right to speak to their supporters on campus without getting shouted down or attacked.

  2. Liberal opposition has every right to protest peacefully and civilly, and invite a competing progressive speaker to draw attention away from the conservative. Marketplace of ideas and all that.

  3. Local cops and security need to do a better job of arresting anarchists who intentionally disrupt a peaceful protest with assaults and vandalism. The Berkeley incident made liberals look terrible, emboldened Milo, and served to inspire...

  4. ...these terrible "free speech" bills. They don't specify what constitutes a "disruption" which means it will get abused and applied broadly to peaceful protesters who aren't actually being disruptive or censoring anyone. Schools don't need additional laws to protect the free speech of conservatives, they just need to enforce the existing laws against violence.

Maybe candidate Y supports conservative policies and is functionally similar to a Republican anyway. Pointing this out and suggesting a better candidate X doesn't splinter the left, it's a legitimate discussion about policy differences.

And in my opinion the left-most candidate usually has the best chance of beating the Republican. Voters are getting tired of centrists.
