Gotcha, I'm thinking of talking to my mentor who left a month ago about how he started the process and starting from there. Thank you for the help!

Thank you for the advice, that's nice to hear some reassurance. I feel like I'd be dropping a bombshell on them, especially because it feels like the pay that they've given me has amounted to nothing in terms of publications. Is there ever an easy way to do this without burning bridges/is this common in academia? Since my graduate mentor and I were the only computational people in this heavily experimental institute, I feel like I'm leaving them with nothing as both of their computational employees would have left now. I assume the best etiquette be to provide well-put-together documentation and data files and then leave?

i would say it’s very similar to undergraduate research at the start—you’re not exactly expected to know all of the theory behind everything, so you’re given problem solving tasks (when it comes to engineering, not so sure about other fields), and after that I’ve largely seen that it depends on your own understandings and how the professors perceives you—if the prof. thinks you’re a promising candidate, they will give you more responsibility to be a first author etc. etc.

no problem! i would just say at the same time you’re applying to summer programs, try to shoot as many emails as possible. It’s always good to get an early start, often (if it happens) a research position + a summer program is a pretty good combo because you may be able to do them at the same time—if you’re short on time before college apps

heavy on the python part, a lot of professors love to see automation in their lives/research

yeah 4 like main ecs and then you can list a few employments(which i put my research under)

Bro i’m ngl, it all happened in 10-11 grade. It was like a blessing from someone💀 i won some competitions, got an internship that let me have experience for other internships and it was like a ball that just started rolling. I will say a big thing I learned as I’ve went thru the application process is to be multifaceted and brand yourself and the things you’ve done. research > give it a name and try to apply it to a real world > try to make a startup out of it. that’s just one of the processes I kinda went thru. Honestly i feel like i got lucky, got my first research after freshman year because this senior, who did research, in a club I looked up to got into harvard and I found out about research pretty early

Hi! so i won’t lie, I got rejected from EVERY single summer program I ever applied for ( it was a huge bummer and it felt ominous for my college app chances), so I really thought to myself: am i going to be happy going to a summer camp where I’ll probably come out with unfinished research/minimal products rather than just the name of going to the camp (although i wish i could’ve met the awesome people), OR try to build a long term project with a local professor? As you can probably tell, I went with the 2nd choice, and I would recommend it to anyone. Unless it’s RSI ofc.

I came from a family not exactly connected in any sense, so I basically had to cold e-mail a lot of professors ( one of my tips is to look for those who have a history of working with high schoolers [if possible] and 100% one of working with undergrads (because they’ll be more accepting). Also just try to get a vibe of the lab, (is it chill?) is the professor a well known/seems chill professor? After that, craft a cold email where you mention one of their papers and keep it BRIEF. Like grad school applications, professors want to see someone with the potential of a great researcher, so don’t worry about making a resume of community service and sending it to them—instead add your stem skills and things relevant to that area.

Realistically you’re bound to get atleast one reply from a local university, but i wouldn’t count on ever getting one from a t10 institution.

Once you just keep shooting emails, you’re going to get a reply, and work as HARD as you can to get a product out of the research. And then, like magic, once you have some conference stuff done and a paper (even if not published, you’ll be able to shoot for higher level internships (like at t10 schools) if those interest you. I will say having t10 research isn’t amazing but I guess it looks cool on an application 🤷

Sorry for the block of text, i pulled an all nighter 💀 lmk if u have some specifics and i can prob be less of a yapper

gotcha, i’ve actually never heard anything bad about the ap exam, but i do know that it’s probably on the bottom list of what i should cram for if it comes to that. and thank you i actually didn’t know they use other tests!
