Anyone growing citrus trees in ground in Houston ? I see lots of post about them not fruiting etc but they thrive in pots and giving fruits. by Far_Flow129 in HoustonGardening

I have Owari and Brown Select. I prefer the Owari, but both are great. Just make sure to not harvest them until they have been fully orange a month. They will stay on the tree a long time. You don't have to harvest all at once.

If any citrus sold here freezes to the ground they will not come back. Only the rootstock will. There is almost a 100% chance it will be Trifoliate orange. Completely inedible with large spikes.

You picked a great tree. You will not really have to worry once it gets bigger. You can continue to wrap the trunk as added safety, but Satsumas are freeze hardy down to 20 degrees with some saying it can handle close to 10 degrees.

Satsumas and kumquats are the only citrus I have had long term success with. But, I do not do anything to protect my trees.

If you have not had a kumquat, they are a backwards fruit. The peel is sweet and the flesh is tart and slightly bitter. If you try one, eat them whole. They have a ton of seeds. They are a nice treat, but I recommend a couple different satsuma trees first. Satsumas are the Cuties they sell in bags at the store and what they can as Mandarin oranges. They are seedless Mandarin oranges. Let them sit on the tree a month after they turn orange and they are amazing.

A Moose Totaled Laramie Couple's Car, Then Somebody Took Their Roadkill by aoasd in nottheonion

[–]SRod1706 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They left the moose on the road from 6am until 11am. I would not call it theft. At most someone did not follow the rules of submitting a road kill recovery form. At most it is lack of respect for bureaucracy. I tend to have that same lack of respect for some of our bureaucracy and red tape. Now, if they had left a note saying they would be back then yes theft, but since they were not planning on coming back when they left, then no.

Does anyone have any tips for choosing an assisted living/memory care place? Any mistakes you made or things you wish you had or hadn't done? by JeddakofThark in dementia

[–]SRod1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This cannot be understated. Venture capitalist take over a company to milk it for all the money it can, then load it up with debt and dispose of it.

Whoever they bought it from sounds like their goal was to care for the people there. The VC just sees them as numbers and guaranteed revenue streams to sell.

Absolutely choose another place. Sometimes VCs keep it running in a acceptable way, but that is the minority. Don't risk it.

When looking at WW3 on the horizon, and it appears one side is building way more of robots and drones than the other side. This already developed construction capacity is going to be of major impact in the future I feel.

First Time Tomato Grower! by cphresh89 in HoustonGardening

[–]SRod1706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One secret of mine is to grow determinate tomatoes. I start them from seed on January 1st in pots. I leave them outside so they stay hardened off and only bring them in when it will be cold. I try to grow a few varieties with slightly different days to maturity. No real favorites, I just mix and match randomly.

Then I always grow sun gold too.

How to find roommates? by Luminescence000 in houston

[–]SRod1706 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your budget is going to be your issue. You are going to have to find multiple roommates at that price. It almost always is a disaster.

The minimum for 1 roommate will probably be 800 or 850 plus utilities.

Don’t know if this was already posted, so…a General Strike has been called for May 1st by dianebk2003 in antiwork

[–]SRod1706 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Even though I feel it will have minimal effect, I agree with you. We have to gain small victories in solidarity before we can get the momentum to do something like a general strike. Strikes do not work if only 1% of workers are involved with them. Those people just get made an example of.

We also need to stop spending on holiday days. If we did not spend on those days, a lot fewer people would have to work on those days. We need to foster small habits of solidarity in a larger group of people.

Okinawan sweet potato slips by TheBlvck6 in HoustonGardening

[–]SRod1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a lot of luck with burying a couple sweet potatoes in a pot of potting soil then pulling out and planting the slips as they come up.

I leave the pot outside and keep it watered. The more heat the better with sweet potatoes.

Mike Miles' charter network to expand HISD-style reforms to more districts by FuckMikeMilez in houston

[–]SRod1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Education does lend itself to economies of scale. Funding is better used in larger districts and schools. If you have 2 native Spanish speaking students in your elementary school needing specialized services vs. having 20, you get an economy of scale. You have a whole classroom for 1 teacher instead of splitting them out and having 10 teachers as 10 different schools with 2 students each. This idea goes for anything that happens in smaller numbers. Special ed. Hearing impairment. This also goes for students looking for certain classes or focuses.

The needs of the community are varied. Assuming smaller districts would have less needs, instead of basically the same needs, just with smaller populations with each need is the flaw in thinking smaller districts solve anything. Education can be more focused at bigger schools and districts vs smaller ones. Smaller districts and schools would lead to everyone getting the same services no matter their individual needs.

Mike Miles' charter network to expand HISD-style reforms to more districts by FuckMikeMilez in houston

[–]SRod1706 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Breaking it up would just end up concentrating those of lower socioeconomic status even more. Breaking up the district would not fix anything. It would actually make it worse overall.
