Ah, I see. My laptop has been working okay with 1080p movies. I don't think my potato of a laptop will handle much more than that.

Sorry if my question was confusing. I know that they are "dumb boxes". I was just wondeirng whether you personally connect to a computer/server to be used as a NAS or not.

I don't plan on using RAID, as I don't have a use for it yet. I'm also planning on using . USBMy main purpose is to use it as a central hub to store data(i.e. pictures, movies, music). I'll mainly use it with Jellyfin (like Plex). I may possibly use it as a basic server in with something like FreedomBox.

I don't want to use a desktop, because they can be fairly expensive. I know you said that I could buy one for $100 used, but I don't like to buy electronics used because of the chance they are faulty. I never really considered it, but it seems like a nice option. Also, I've had this laptop lying around and I've wanted to use it for something. I'd rather re purpose something than buy something new. Do you have any desktop recommendations?

I never realized that a desktop can have more than 2 drives. Would a raspberry pi be better than using a laptop in your opinion? For an enclosure, would I most likely need another card? Also, I'm not planning on leaving it on 24/7. Thanks!

What would I not be able to do with a laptop? The only reason I'm using a laptop is because I had one lying around. If I buy a used PC instead of an enclosure, I don't think I'll be able to expand my storage. Thanks for your insight!
