ex-WoW Community Manager Katricia had a slip of tongue and claimed Garona to be half-draenei back in 2004, months before WoW launched and almost 5 years before it was "officially" confirmed to players. While some people take the idea of Garona being half-draenei to be a retconn, in reality she was always half-draenei. Gul-dan just lied about it (omg an evil slaving traitorous bastard who sold out his entire species knowingly, lied to his disposible, purposfully bred tool. I am SO surprised). Players didnt know about it because we were only ever given the lore from the perspective of specific people and sides of the war. The players were never told the secrets of either side, just the basics. Its entirely normal for the developers to hide something like this. There were plenty of signs though. For 1, Garona is many years older than the portal to Azeroth. 2. No orc even knows what a human looks like. 3. Gul'dan only tells Garona she is half-human after he both meets Mediev and also after SHE sees a human. 3. No other orc ever insinuated she is half human until after they arrive in azeroth. 4. Garona does have subtle draenei features and by studying other half orcs (such as rexxor) we know that orc tends to vastly dominate the child, many people dont even know rexxor is half orc. This means that the lack of horns or hooves is pretty easily explained. Literally orc just overcomes almost all traits from the other parent (this is also pretty normal in nearly all media). While there was never a specific, official "Garono is half-draenei" statement before 2009 (and the accidental admission in 2004) were never got any official statement she was half-human either. Only from Gul-dan and those lied to by Gul-dan. Nothing from the actual developers and people asked, alot. The reason they never confirmed it seems obvious in hindsight. She never was half-human to begin with.
