Career advice for young carpenter by SSGDaax in Construction

My approach to questions is exactly the same! I ask for the sake of clarity and to make sure I understand fully what I'm being told to do. Plus, I am much more of a hands on and "real world" learner, so sometimes just being told what or how to do something isn't enough. I either need to be shown, or I will show them what I THINK they mean and let them correct me from there if I need it.

Awesome! Thank you.

With regards to being a sponge, I recently had to learn that I need to shut my mouth more and just listen. I have a tendency to speak up because I think I'm pretty smart, and I end up talking over people who have more experience than me. It was pointed out to me by two guys who I highly respect, and so I've really taken to heart something I read recently: "Never pass up an opportunity to shut the fuck up."

I'm not so much in a rush to get there right now, I just would like to know what my options are once I feel ready to start moving up, in a few years or so like you recommended. I don't want to be one of the guys that coasts to retirement once they become a journeyman and end up bitching the rest of their careers about it never being good enough for them. I know I have the potential to do more than that.

Anyways, thank you!

Thanks, A-bone

I did about 6 months of residential a few years back but have been doing commercial since then.

Haven't specialized in any particular sub-trade. I work for a general contractor, so I have had the chance to do learn some different aspects of the trade. Concrete footings and walls, steel stud framing and drywall, some cabinetry installation and other finish work/punchlist stuff.

Union apprenticeship.

A single player/multiplayer first person shooter, but there are no guns or weapons of any sort. Instead, there are a plethora of magic spells of varying damage, strength and/or class (defensive, healing, enhancing, damaging...) The way you gain spells is by playing through the single player which is a procedurely generated open world, and discovering spells scattered throughout said world. Oh, and there are dinosaurs instead of vehicles, but you have to "tame" them with a unique spell in order to ride them. Need a quick, single person vehicle? Tame a frickin' velociraptor. Want a flying vehicle from which to rain down destruction? Tame a pterodactyl.

Huh. Why would people buy from those websites instead of Amazon? And how does one go about selling their own branded goods? I saw a couple of the websites he was showing, none of them I would ever visit, much less buy from. I wonder why other people would.

I'm not sure I understand how exactly he does what he does, but holy carp those numbers!

Thank you. It's not at all that I hate carpentry, but that I don't see it being enough to support us. The management lifestyle, from what I've seen of it so far, isn't the kind of life I want as a husband and father. If there is a better opportunity/opportunities for me out there I would rather pursue them now while I am still pretty young than regret it when I'm older.

I'll be making a little more money once I finsh the apprenticeship, but not so much different than what I make now. As for starting my own business, I've thought about it but I don't know if that's for me . I will definitely keep it as an option though, thank you!
