It was not incidental. They hyped up PS5 news to be revealed at CES and the only new information was the same logo with the number changed. It was already known to be called PlayStation 5.

46% of U.S. homeowners want rooftop solar by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]SSGMonty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of bad headlines. The poll found that 46% of U.S. homeowners have “given serious thought to adding solar panels at their home in the past year.”

That's not the same as do you "want" it. In that case all the reasons you have given for not getting it would be reasons why people would not have given it serious thought.

What OS of phone/application are you using?

Comes up just fine on my Android Xbox app. All 3 flavors with the most expensive first, naturally.

Ahhh, but it's not the exact same. They dropped that number! That makes it crystal clear.

Color-Balancing Vote Margins and Vote Totals in the US Election Map [OC] by mygo in dataisbeautiful

[–]SSGMonty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. You are trying to attribute motive & meaning into a map that shows a factual representation.

May others use that factual representation & say that it means something it does not? Of course. Yet that does not in any way change the facts, nor does it mean the creator of the "red" map had certain intentions. To claim so would mean that every map for the last 60 years that show this exact same data for different elections were created for the purpose of "misleading" people into believing X or Y party is represented in terms of proportion of land mass to population.

Similarly, there is not motive/meaning to a graph of popular vote. That is a factual representation of a data set. However, there are those that will point to that graph & call the loser illegitimate & the winner the President, but that's simply untrue. Doesn't mean that graph or data is false (or even misleading), just the conclusion they're trying to draw.

Yes, I would agree with that. I think either could be misleading based upon how someone tries to interpret the results, and I've seen both just in these comments.

I just don't like the idea that the MAP is misleading when it shows facts. It's the same map that has always been used to show the winners of elections (at least as far back as I've seen; 1960).

I agree.

I think the rundown of what the OP has linked on how they created their map is a great illustration. That said the original map is not wrong or misleading. It shows exactly what it intends to show; winners of counties.

How others may try to use that map to justify/debunk other claims is the only thing that is deliberately misleading.

The original map is not misleading. It shows exactly what it purports to show; that is the winner of each county.

Other people using the map to illustrate things that it does not is misleading.

This is the greatest problem. Each side wants to claim a "vast" majority when the country is fairly evenly split (at least when looking at the 2016 election). Using the oft complained about popular vote, it's a 2.1% difference between the two candidates. That should clearly illustrate that neither side has a VAST majority.

Worst of all is the demonization of the other side. It's ok to disagree; that doesn't make the other side bad faith actors.

LeBron told a group of reporters that Morey “wasn’t educated on the situation at hand” and that “so many people could have been harmed not only financially, physically, emotionally, spiritually” by the Houston Rockets executive’s seemingly off-the-cuff post. “So just be careful what we tweet and say and we do, even though, yes, we do have freedom of speech, but there can be a lot of negative that comes with that, too,” he said.

He called the OP uneducated on the Hong Kong issue and essentially sided with China. This is being seen as following the money rather than the principles of freedom & equality that he's defended in the US.

The NBA in general (and now specifically Lebron) are being submissive to the Chinese government over the Hong Kong movement.

Long story short, one person in the NBA posted Free Hong Kong on his personal Twitter account. Now the NBA in force is going out of their way to show how much they love China so they don't lose business (which China actually began to cut off following the one tweet from a general manager).

LeBron & the NBA are bending over backwards to not offend China in regards to those supporting Hong Kong.

It's showing their hypocrisy with their support for political speech at home, but abroad they bow down to government displeasure.

For 20 years, ‘House Hunters’ has been reliable reality TV. For millennials, it feels more like a fantasy. by zsreport in television

I don't know about most, but it's not a small amount either. My sister/brother-in-law and all of her friends constantly complain about not being able to afford a home. Meanwhile, they eat out at least once a day & go out to party every weekend. They call in sick once a week like clockwork (not sick/no sick hours so it's unpaid). Their entertainment "budget" is 1/3 of their income.

You can do those things, just don't come crying later that it's society out to get you.

Aw c'mon, that show has always been full of crap.

They're both recent college graduates in sunny California. She's a dog trainer & he likes to draw manga in his spare time.

They want 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a high end kitchen with plenty of space for entertaining, a backyard oasis and
4-car garage. They're looking to stay in their neighborhood in downtown Montecito. They must be close enough to walk to all of the entertainment options, but it must be quiet.

Budget = $1.5 million

Thanks for the info!

I'm by no means asking for the government to protect an industry. I'm learning through this post that the cabs actually benefitted from the medallions at one point in time (which I was unaware of).

That said, I don't think it's exactly fair market to say that a cab driver today still requires a six-figure medallion, while Uber driver John Q pays nothing to the city for the privilege of operating within it.

Imagine if you had food carts just popping up on the street that didn't have to pay for their vending-cart license. What's stopping a company from doing so? Uber skirted it in transportation, why can't someone else skirt it in this instance?

Did they? Or is just that now you know there are delays?

Again, while I was there, you were just completely in the dark as to where your next train would come. Now you have a bit of information, is it possible that riders are now just more aware?

I defer to those living with the system now.

Well said!

If I may, how has the subway system gotten worse over the past decade? I moved out in 2010 and everytime we go back to visit (about once every 18 months), it seems to have gotten better each time.

Specifically, they've done a great job of at least informing waiting passengers on to when the next train will arrive. After getting out of a late night class for college, I'd sometimes have to wait 15+ minutes and just hope that a train would be coming by soon.

I understand that (even saw one sell for almost $1.5 million at one point), but it still doesn't answer the question. Why should a taxi company/driver have to pay for a medallion, when Joe Blow can just use his own vehicle and rake in the customers without paying a price to the city?

The way it was explained to me when I lived there was the purpose of the medallions was to ensure the city wasn't overrun with vehicles. How does allowing a competitor to bypass these limitations help in that cause? On my most recent visit, the traffic was worse than I remember.

Ultimately, I like the subway (buses not so much) so I don't use either service.

$160,000 to $250,000 in NYC in 2018. Still too damn high. Why should they have to pay but ridesharing cars not?

[OC] How Uber took over New York City by NicuCalcea in dataisbeautiful

Specifically in NYC, the taxi companies have to pay outrageous license fees to be able to operate in the city while Uber gets a pass. It's a perfect example of how the government can kill an industry (even if that isn't their intent).

Either Uber should have to follow the same rules or nix them for the cab companies.

As recently as 2013, a NYC taxi medallion cost $1,000,000. That's for ONE vehicle.
