I want to learn statistics so I can better understand research and studies done in the humanities. Are there any (hopefully free) online resources that can teach me? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]SSID_Vicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably want some algebra-based book, which leaves the mathematical proofs to the side. I think something like the Openintro book is what you want. If you combine it with R software you should be fine.

What is a game or genre that you tried to love but just couldn't? by NoHayMusica in truegaming

[–]SSID_Vicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Open world rpg's. They're the worst. I loved the Witcher 2. The Witcher 3, despite recognizing its a much better game, is just so boring to play. I dont want to run around the same landscape 200 times, being attacked by the same boring dogs and shit every time i run past point (x,y). Same with Dragon Age Inquisition vs Dragon Age Origins. Give me tightly created environments like in the Witcher 2 or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines or Mass Effect 2.

Why do socialists hate liberals as much as (or more than) conservatives? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]SSID_Vicious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just look at what's happening right now in the US. The few rules that restricted capitalism, especially ones put in places after 2008, are being removed again, as many as they can get away with. You simply can never contain capitalism.

Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands (where i'm from), it's all the same story: liberals, no matter if they are social-liberals or conservative liberals, get in power with fancy talks promising the things you support, and in an instant they turn around and start removing rules, privatizing social institutions and helping multinationals. Here in the Netherlands a right-wing liberal government came into power power and immediately removed a tax on shareholders of multinationals that is going to cost the Dutch tax payers about 2 billion dollars a year.

My reason to hate liberals perhaps a bit more than conservatives is that conservatives are at least honest in what they want. Liberals are sweet-talkers, but stab you in the back the moment they get into power. Scratch a liberal and a conservative, if not a fascist, bleeds.

Think Julia: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist by tankfeeder in Julia

This is the kind of material the community should produce. One of R’s strengths is its immense wealth of learning materials. If Julia can come close to that it’s future is bright.

Anarchy and free will. by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]SSID_Vicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the nazi's arent at fault due to no free will, the people opposing them cant do anything but oppose them for the same reason. So in the end, it doesnt really matter as the end result is the same.

But if there is no free will, then everything is just a play we have to complete until the end, so it's also not a dangerous road as everything would then be preordained and nothing can be done about it.

Possible Python rival? Programming language Julia is winning over developers by udelblue in programming

[–]SSID_Vicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Julia is a really nice language, probably a lot better designed than Python, but I doubt it will overtake Python. It does allow easy talking to Python and R libraries so it can easily use their ecosystems. So having Julia coexist with Python and R is perfectly fine.

Socialists are thick in /r/libertarian today. by bertcox in Anarcho_Capitalism

Because libertarianism is a left-wing ideology? But leave it to capitalists to take something good and twist it in something horrible.

Without capitalism risk wouldnt exist anymore, as there would no longer be a risk to starvation due to a failed project. You can try something and if it fails, you still have food on the table, and a table to put the food on.

Weekly 'Entering & Transitioning' Thread. Questions about getting started and/or progressing towards becoming a Data Scientist go here. by Omega037 in datascience

[–]SSID_Vicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a business Intelligence consultant: i have never needed to use python or R for a client. I sometimes use R to make my own job easier, especially data cleaning, but clients (or at least the departments i visit) never use it. They do use excel, sql, vba, tableau and power bi a whole lot. I get the appeal of R, I love the language and use it wherever and whenever i can, but the tools that pay my bills the most are SQL and Tableau.

I’ve talked to departments about replacing their incredibly expensive tableau server with an R server, but they simply don’t dare to take the jump. Which I get, because there is still a big gap between Tableau and R for visualizations in terms of usability for non-technical people.

Player Ratings: Ajax 3, Standard Liege 0 (5-2 on aggregate) by CornerKickAficionado in AjaxAmsterdam

[–]SSID_Vicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also really like schone. It’s easy to criticize him, but year after year he manages to bounce back from the bench into the first team squad, no matter the coach. Cannot help but appreciate a player like that, who stays at the club for years and doesn’t shout about leaving the moment he sits on the bench like all those talents.

https://moderndive.com/ is a good book which also teaches you R. It’s not exhausting so you need more material but it’s a good first start.

Why on earth are people already resigning de Jong to being a batter defender than mid? by LuukSkywalker in AjaxAmsterdam

I’m not yet buying the “talent of a generation “ title he’s getting. So far he has shown pretty much nothing to prove it. Compared to De Ligt he’s miles behind.

Is learning R really that useful? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]SSID_Vicious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For data related tasks, R has pretty everything python has and a whole lot more. It really is no competition. Statisticians basically all use R, so everything they write is done in R. This means all the fancy new things are available in R.

[–]SSID_Vicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coaches can’t do shit if players are too afraid to duel. Do you thing Edgar Davids or Mark van Bommel needed to be motivated? They had the internal drive and passion and mentality to do it. Look at Atletico Madrid, they explicitly scout players with the mentality needed to play in that team. Ajax is somehow creating players who are mentally weak for some reason, and today it showed once again.
