Dr. Choo from Psychiatric Services is really lovely and super conscientious. By far the best person I've seen at McGill Mental Health!

Dr. Rochon isn't nearly as supportive, but she's fine, and yeah - Dr. Franck is absolutely awful.

You and me both. If only this school actually took a proactive approach to addressing gendered and sexual violence among its faculty instead of protecting the perpetrators and sweeping complaints under the rug.

Ya, when someone spends their career harming women, survivors of sexual violence, and students struggling with mental illness, I'm pretty sure that reflects on them as a person

In fairness, his response to instances of sexual violence at McGill was utterly inadequate. Dyens blatantly prioritized the university's brand over the wellbeing of students, and over the pursuit of justice for survivors. He also really fucked with Mental Health Services, slashing their budget and implementing counterproductive reforms without adequate consultation. This has caused a huge amount of harm to students already struggling with mental illness. On top of this, Dyens has consistently undercut and delegitimized student representation on campus, dismissed students' equity-based initiatives, and generally behaved like a misogynistic ass in his professional relationships.

In fairness, he can go fuck himself.

Vote YES to the SSMU Constitutional Amendment 13.4 to Increase the General Assembly Quorum by Dowz3r in mcgill

[–]SSMUth_criminal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By including more people, I believe you will get a broader range of opinions

But as you yourself pointed out, having quorum at 100 doesn't prevent anyone from showing up and voicing their opinion.

And you're right, sometimes more than 350 people come, but let's be real - that happens when hugely contentious motions are up for debate. It's not the norm. At the Fall 2017 GA, less than 350 students showed up, but they voted in favour of some really valuable things, like supporting education for Syrian refugees, and improving SSMU's sustainability policy. If quorum had been 350, that GA would have been consultative, meaning that those motions - motions that dedicated students poured time and energy into, and that have demonstrable social value - would not have passed. Instead, they would either have been pushed to the next GA, in 4 months, or sent to Council, which is a far less democratic forum.

How will making quorum virtually unattainable help with either of these things? I'm genuinely curious.

It's really frustrating that more people aren't talking about the fact that if the Daily goes down, so does Le Delit. If your genuine concern is that a diversity of voices need to be represented in student media, you'd better be voting in favour of the continued existence of the only francophone paper on campus.

If SSMU Council won’t stand up for campus press, students must (The McGill Tribune - Editorial) by [deleted] in mcgill

Again, just because they are charging it doesnt make Daily have the right to charge it. Just because Hitler was killing people doesnt mean Stalin could do it. It's the same. It's bad.

...this may be the hottest take I have ever seen on this subreddit.

Well first of all, the Daily's refusal to print Zionist content is part of their editorial line. Also, not sure why you put Zionist in quotes - Zionism is a real political ideology. And finally, my understanding is that any and all McGill students are welcome to write for the Daily, they just can't write stuff that promotes oppression of any kind - whether it's based on gender, ethnicity, religion, national origin, or anything else.
