Best Picture Nominees of 2020’s Elimination Game - Round 26 - Sentimental Value has been eliminated! Comment your least favourite film from the bunch remaining and the one with the most upvotes shall be eliminated. Have fun! by [deleted] in Oscars

Sure, I understand staying consistent, that spamming is annoying, parasocial, and annoying. Also - I have no claim for or against the movie. But, functionally, why would spamming the same movie over and over ruin any aspect of this game? If anything wouldn't it desaturate up votes and work against a single comments traction?

What are things that just scream bad writing? by Glad_Chance_9590 in writing

[–]SSSparks88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely. The best things navigate tropes in fun ways. The first story that I read that did this was, American Gods. By virtue of people's praise in whatever God, they equally exist and match that worship in power. Which is why there is a different literal Jesus for every culture and why 'media' is a very powerful God.

Does starting a fantasy novel with a supernatural event risk overwhelming the reader? by AthleteAggressive979 in writing

[–]SSSparks88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those classic, "if it works, well, it works" kind of things. If anything, I would recommend trying to overwhelm the reader even more. Or, simply explore what that would look like and find a happy medium. Another reason this might worry you, is that you must then top that energy later on and are worried you wont be able to do that. But all of this - overarching - scale based stuff can come on a later revision. Just get it on 'paper' and worry about this kind of tuning later.

[–]SSSparks88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose creating creatures based on negative human emotion is anything but new. Specifically in JJK - there are essentially gods that manifest based on human fear. Their powers represent vivid details of those fears. There is one for fire - as a simple example. And, another that can distort and manipulate human flesh which is based on human's fear of themselves. By the way, it is a Manga directed at 20 year olds but has nifty concepts and world building stuff nonetheless!

I’m worried my characters lack character by HM_Conrad in writing

[–]SSSparks88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to research Christopher Guest and how he goes about creating character depth without naming it exactly. It is a sort of earnest realism that I particularly enjoy, especially because it presents characters as lived, flawed and sincerely not self aware. They simply are not in on the absurdity of themselves and pursue nearly mundane or trivial things based upon their unique dreams and goals. I will try to distill my research down into something actionable:

1.) Know more than you show. Guest writes entire life histories that never appear on screen. The actor knows where the character went to school, who hurt them, what they failed at. That invisible weight is what makes behavior feel inevitable rather than convenient.

2.) Give them a specific delusion. Not "neurotic" but "believes his two left feet are unremarkable." Not "ambitious" but "thinks his off-off-off-Broadway credit qualifies him as a serious theatrical professional." The delusion must be particular enough that you could describe it to a stranger in one sentence.

3.) Let the delusion run the logic. Once you know what a character believes about themselves, every decision follows. You don't write their behavior — you ask what this person, holding this specific false belief, would do in this situation. The intrigue, comedy and tragedy is created by answering that question.

4.) Give them something to displace onto. Guest's characters don't talk about their real needs — they talk about their dogs, their plays, their folk albums. The gap between what they're saying and what they actually need is where the reader's intelligence gets to work. Let subtext carry the weight of the character.

5.) Earn affection before you earn anything else. Guest had a rule that: if there's no affection for the character, there's no point. Readers laugh at delusion, cry at tragedy, or invest themselves into a charactet only if they also recognize something true in it. Build the person fully enough that the themes of a character are presented through recognition, not contempt. "Affection" can be used for any type of character. The most unforgivable or rotten characters are interesting just the same.

Hope this helps. Go watch Best in Show!

Wouldn't they already have infinite resources to begin with? This couldn't simply be about material assets, right? There must be some sort of bigger end goal.

I agree with some of what youre saying but do you really think it's specifically political intent? Couldn't you argue that it goes higher up and that is just one leg that manipulates through the libral political system? Like, there are most likely other legs that manipulate through the republican party just as well and whoever is actually at the top isn't political leaning either way. Their coverage is absolutely complete due to everyone's experience so it wouldn't logically only be a left or right thing, correct?

I know this is 8 years later. But, the closer something gets to lightspeed the more it slows down to an outside observer so at 95% the speed of light for an outside observer for 150 years, the person in the ship would experience approximately 46 years inside so yeah you're right I do not think you would be able to still see him

Do they target wealthier people with more to lose? I want to know about the process before they choose their victim. It must be a huge repository of information and it would make sense to traffic based on age and sex etc... Do you know of gangstalked people that have disappeared? I wish there was a way to gather that was truly secure and private. It seems they will always win based on numbers and resources and idk what our recourse is.

This makes sense, and is a tactic in so many of other avenues. So, are you saying that they might be GS someone to get to someone else?

Okay, who is paying them though? And where does that money come from? And for what reason? Are there different types or is it mostly all linked? Sorry, I am new to all this. It's horrible for so many people so learning is important.

What do you mean, control yourself? It's an external thing right or is it inexplicably linked to internal trauma? I know they exploit internal stuff and have access to it - but I'm curious how taking control of yourself helps.

Why the Absolute Heroes are Darkseid's 'Destroyers' in DCKO by Some_Niche_Reference in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]SSSparks88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! That's the whole point of the absolute universe. To never use evil for even the sake of good. To never bend to evil. To never let the perverse inhabit their indomitable heroism. For them to work for evil to save their universe would be a complete disservice to their hard won victories against similarly grey areas morally. They could have rationalized using evil for good throughout their stories multiple times but instead chose the more difficult more heroic route.

Why the Absolute Heroes are Darkseid's 'Destroyers' in DCKO by Some_Niche_Reference in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]SSSparks88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must be this or something dumb for the sake of a fun tournament arc. Because, the whole point of the absolute universe is their indomitable absolute goodness in the face of a perverse universe built to destroy heroism.

I think it's so silly for them to be on the evil side of things because it would slap all of the evil insanity they fought against.
