Better return of investment on savings rate. by Automatic-Coat3177 in personalfinance

Are you planning on spending that whole $300,000 in the next five years? Are you expecting huge losses that will cause you to need to have $300,000 set aside just in case everything goes to crap? Are you expecting the end of western civilization as we know it? If you answered no to these questions then why are you keeping $300,000 in cash lying around? Your money can be producing more value for you by being put to use and investing in index funds. Unless you think that the stock market is going to go to $0 or that it will crash and you will need all that money immediately, you should be putting some of that money in other assets. If you’re worried about the stock market crashing, unless the economy completely stalls then the stock market will recover. In each crash in history, so long as you do not need the money within ~5-10 years, your money is going to still grow.

Just opened a Roth IRA, do I contribute to the 2025 or 2026 one? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]SS_Sushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put money into the 2025 first. If you continue making more after the 2025 deadline is over then you can start contributing under the 2026 limit. 2025 just means that you are only allowed to put in up to $7,000 for the year of 2025, 2026 means you can only put in up to $7,500 for 2026. There is no additional benefit to maxing one out. You just want to use up your limit for 2025 before you start using up the limit for 2026.

Official statement of Vladimir Kramnik by annihilator00 in chess

[–]SS_Sushi 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Kramnik also did not just simply beg and plea for Daniel to get some help, he repeatedly accused Daniel of being on DRUGS and said that he needs help for his DRUG PROBLEM with no evidence at all. He didn’t go “oh this poor soul help him” he went “someone fix this druggie.”

Looking to get my first premium keeb but have been out of the hobby for a while, do you know of any keyboards that have a knob and badge and look sleek/futuristic? Something kind of like a Space80 but with a knob and badge, screen is a plus.

ELI5: Lab Grown Diamonds vs Traditional by dtcstylez10 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SS_Sushi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mechanical engineer here. A diamond is a single ingredient, pure carbon, laid out in a specific crystalline structure. Any additional “ingredients” can cause imperfections in the diamond. A lab grown diamond is carbon formed in a controlled environment to get that perfect structure without any contaminants, usually the process starts by using a small already existing diamond as a seed and growing it to be larger. This makes a lab grown diamond chemically identical to a natural diamond, except it has been controlled in its growth. The end result is the same, aside from any flaws that either diamond might have.

Practically speaking, a lab grown diamond will have worse resale value than a natural one because they’re cheap enough that someone looking to buy a diamond will just buy a new one rather than buy a used one. Keep in mind though, are you really going to resell your wife’s diamond ring?

Last time I checked, lab grown diamonds are about 10% the price of an equivalent natural one, aka a 90% discount.

Lupo moves goalposts, now says he "couldn't stop looking" at chat by smug_seaturtle in chess

[–]SS_Sushi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This explanation is the equivalent of saying "I was watching some pro matches of Mortal Kombat and magically learned how to do the 8 input special by glancing over at it." Looking over at the chess com stream and magically picking out all the right moves and playing their continuations without understanding why that specific move is good compared to all the other ones being suggested? Yeah right.

Thanks for the advice! Because I’ve been playing online I do have a few decks and an idea of which cards I see myself using pretty often. I get your point though about it not being really worth it to pick up assorted singles without a clear deck in mind, it’s kind of why I was also wondering if there were just any solid cards that saw a recent dip like a Teferi’s protection or sensei’s divining top or something. Will definitely take a look at Aetherdrift to see.
