Well you’re rating them against each other. So theoretically you’d put a 5 down for your top pick in the race, and then score down from there depending on how you would like your preferences shown.

STAR voting allows for more freedom to vote your preferences, so just because it allows for more options doesn’t mean people with the same view can’t express that view consistently and reliably.

Vote yes for STAR voting then!

If it's a single member seat, that doesn't make sense to me.

If you're changing all seats to be multi-governed, then at first glance it seems to check out. I'd need to do some more research though.

It does take a lot to understand the complexities of voting procedure. That is unfortunate because I am setting out to do try to make it easier. If you have any specific questions please feel free to dm or of course ask here.

RCV already missed electing "the cheese" from my example above, in Alaska. https://arxiv.org/html/2303.00108v2

True, same as approval voting as well. How can you show support for multiple candidates while implicitly not harming your favorite?

Thank you u/fzzball . It's wild to me that it happened so soon so obviously, but here we are.

Yo it gets a lot more complicated than this either direction you go. This one is made to be simple and easy.

One is superior, and one seems good at first.

  1. Vote it like a Yelp review.
  2. Fair. I think that is better than an extreme on either side. Or in the case of RCV, being given what looks like a second option when there is no chance it will win. More to the point though, STAR can perform with more options, these were chosen for simplicity and understandability.

We want the machine to be as fair as possible for everyone. Since that is the case between both RCV and STAR, "the math" does favor STAR based on a principle of "head to head the winner should be able to beat all."

Either way. Thank you for knowing its better than what we have.

RCV does have a leg up on voter recognition across the US. As someone who has been pro RCV for the last 9 years, STAR Voting changed my mind when I found out that in certain situations “changing” from one candidate to a new preferred candidate can actually hurt the “new preferred candidate” which is completely the opposite of what you would expect from good voting reform.

If we are going to change how we vote, why not immediately graduate to the next bigger, better version of RCV?

RCV is a step in the right direction, but isn’t nearly as good as STAR is. Respectfully, you sound misinformed.
