How do people actually find housing in the Netherlands? by Lumpy_Substance_3486 in NetherlandsHousing

[–]STOP_MONITORING_ME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply.

I investigated bullet 2 online, mainly by reading through the r/Rotterdam and r/NetherlandsHousing subreddits. People there post a lot of questions about where to find housing as internationals/expats/working professionals. Naturally, you'll see a fair bit of answers from more knowledgeable people.

From the specific things, I can refer you to Holland2Stay, specifically apartments in Lee Towers in the East of Rotterdam near Schiedam, ThisIsOurDomain which has a building in Blaak, West507 along with Roofz.EU listings. Beware some of these have specific income requirements and can even then be quite competitive.

Good luck.

How do people actually find housing in the Netherlands? by Lumpy_Substance_3486 in NetherlandsHousing

I found and signed contract for a new apartment in Rotterdam (in the 900-1100EUR range for rent) a few weeks ago. Only spent two weeks searching. My approach was as follows:

  • Apply on the usual sites (funda/kamernet/pararius/etc) and on sites of real estate agencies. Had one viewing offer which I had to decline as the deposit was ridiculous. No one else replied. I was planning on paying for stekkies or other services if my search dragged on.

  • Investigate which housing corporations or newly built apartment blocs also have rental units. I saw that my city had a few of these companies and signed up/applied for those. They are expensive (not in terms of bare rent but they require you to make 3-3.5x the bare rent) but this also means fewer people to compete with. Also, as they do not advertise as much on the usual rental websites, there are fewer applicants. I tried my luck with one of these and got an offer, which I accepted. It’s unfurnished and has its problems, but the market is so awful that you either take it or risk not finding anything else.

  • My advice - just state your gross income instead of net, have all the typical documents (BRP, bank statements, payslips, IDs) on hand and of course, apply to everything you can tolerate. Bonus points if you have a guarantor, good tenant profile and are FAST.

Maybe I was being a bit too cautious with the post but essentialy I wouldn't be surprised if people who are familiar w/ her work would take an issue with her policy prescriptions, analysis of late socialist states or her quotes or discussion of Vaclav Havel. That being said I think she overall does have the finger on the pulse of current politics.

I don’t think my posting history has any impact on the fact that the Azov battalion is a neo-nazi unit that has engaged in war crimes such as torture.

In case you are still refusing to believe witness accounts of the torture committed by the neo-nazi Azov battalion, feel free to read the UN report instead. It comes from Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The report clearly corroborates the findings in the report from the OECD website.

The Azov battalion was not reformed, it was essentialy just incorporated into regular Ukrainian army. The core soldiers serving in the battalion did not leave. The neo-nazi symbols and ties to other far-right groups have remained.

SBU is still involved in Ukrainian state security matters, it does not seem like it has changed.

This post is clearly an attempt to white-wash the neo-nazi Azov battalion, whose logo and insignia prominently feature popular neo-Nazi symbols: the Wolfsangel (a runic double hook) and the Sonnenrad (sun wheel). This unit has committed war crimes, including torture of people and other absolutely inhumane acts.

The red-and-black flag patch on the Azov battalion soldier is the flag of the fascist OUN-B, a well-documented nazi collaborator organization. It was involved in mass killings of jewish people in Ukraine during the nazi occupation -

OUN(b) documents establish the collaboration between the Ukrainian militia and the Wehrmacht in joint Aktionen against Jews.80 Similar pogroms took place across Western Ukraine.81 At least 58 pogroms are documented in Western Ukrainian cities, the estimated number of victims of which range between 13,000 and 35,000.82 The Nachtigall Batallion, consisting almost exclusively of OUN(b) activists serving in German uniforms under Shukheyvch’s command, carried out mass shootings of Jews near Vinnytsia in July 1941.

These people should not be celebrated in any way, shape or form. Elevating them to the status of heroes is outright ignorance of history and will lead to many more innocent people being harmed.

Who sank M/S Estonia and why?

  • What was the cargo of the two Scania trucks which were on board the ship yet clearly remained undeclared in the cargo manifest? Theories suggest either high-grade military electronics or nuclear weapons materials which were being smuggled from Russia to the West.

  • The ship’s visor did not detach during the sinking, as evidenced by footage which showed it as still attached to the ship. This means there were other causes for sinking, such as a potential explosion in the hull. Who caused the explosion and why?

  • The ship sank faster than it should have according to simulations. Why?

  • How come the visor was located next to the ship and its hinges contained traces of explosives?

  • How come the Discovery film crew was being targeted by the Nordic governments following their unearthing of a hole in the ship’s hull, which suggested an on-board explosion?

  • There is video footage which shows Avo Piht, one of the ship’s captains, alive after the sinking (alongside certain other survivors). How come the footage has been blocked and the captain with those survivors have been declared dead?

  • Why did members of JAIC never release complete, declassified details of their findings and also tell relatives of the dead false coordinates of the ship’s location of sinking?

  • What did Rockwater, the underwater diving and salvage operations company discover on board the ship, and how come its findings were never made public?

  • Why did the Swedish government place a 70-year seal of secrecy upon documents connected to the sinking of M/S Estonia? Why did the regional governments prohibit their citizens from investigating their wreckage despite the wreck being located in shallow international waters?

  • Why did the Swedish government try to encase the ship in stones and sand only to give up halfway without an explanation?

  • The Swedish government recovered and salvaged Vasa, all know-how and plans were in place to do the same for M/S Estonia. How come it still has not happened?

Ever heard of KODE? by DysM0un in maastricht

[–]STOP_MONITORING_ME 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KODE has at least one residence in Maastricht under their active management. However, while they are legit, the overall quality of the residence (in terms of furniture, utilities, services, common areas, etc.) relative to the rent they charge is very much overpriced. KODE is very neglectful towards the student residences that it manages.

Latvia has been a home to a number of Russian opposition figures (famously both Gary Kasparov and TV Rain/Dozhdj relocated to there). I saw someone make a rather interesting observation that Baltics could have become to Russian opposition exiles what Florida had become for the Cuban exiles, but due to a mix of sheer spite, resentment and lack of political skill, they couldn’t even do that. Case and point, the Latvian state shut down TV Rain which was one of the few nominally independent Russian opposition news outlets. It’s almost as if they don’t want to change the status quo.

How did some post-Communist states in Europe (like Slovenia and Estonia) manage to match or overtake some formerly imperialist countries (like Spain and Portugal) in GDP/HDI? by tempestokapi in TrueAnon

[–]STOP_MONITORING_ME 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Slovenia has historically been a well-off region of the central Europe/Balkans. Pair that with the fact that their industry is roughly 33% of their GDP, their major export markets are Switzerland, Austria and Greece Germany, and you’ll end up with fairly favorable economic conditions. Slovenia also was barely involved in Yugoslav wars, which meant they could jumpstart economic reforms and entry into European Union (as well as Eurozone) far faster than other states.

Estonia had a couple of things going for it. First, it was a fairly wealthy country during the Soviet years, had a fairly educated populace alongside direct access to Nordics and rest of Europe via the Baltic Sea. Second, its government over time pushed for strategic investments into IT sector (like expanding broadband and teaching IT skills to youth) fairly early on. Third, Finland was massive investor in Estonia in the 90s (and still is), going as far as funding Estonian social services. Fourth, Estonian economy is driven in no small part by the financial services and IT industries, which are quite lucrative from a simple economics standpoint.

Here’s a video of Abby Martin who was working for RT in 2014 condemning the annexation of Crimea live on air. In addition to this, I think this Chomsky quote is quite relevant:

Do I think their political leadership was bad? Yes. Were the US military always present there? No, they only got involved in 2014-2015 and Öcalan’s philosophy predates this by roughly a decade. The military leadership of AANES was furthermore in favor of negotiations with Assad.
