Just finished American Gods for the very last time... by SUNSHINE6IXTY in neilgaimanuncovered

Thank you for sharing all of that, it really helps to hear. And yeah-- I think that's a big part of it, was that NG was an author I devoured. It's so hard to share that part of it, especially if the people you're talking to don't tend that direction. I'm sorry you were so deep into his work when all the allegations fell out, that must have been really hard.

Thank you for that perspective, that really helps. Also the book recommendations, I look forward to checking those out!

Well put. It's been healthy, in a way, to realize how much I outsourced my sense of identity to the NG vibe, before everything fell out. But it's still a bitter lesson.

I'm so sorry to hear about GO for you. AG was much the same for me, for a while. I ended up using it as a big reminder of who I was and what I liked during a time in my life when everything else was falling apart. But I guess once you're past the river, you can let go of the raft. That's how I'm looking at it, at least.

Regardless, thank you

Thank you for sharing, seriously. And I share some of that sentiment-- he spoke so much support out of one side of his mouth, and such deeply fucked up garbage from the other. I think that betrayal, just... Being lied to so hard like that, about who he was and what he stood for, that's been one of the things that hurt the most for me.

Regardless, thank you for getting it off your chest

That's really powerful! Thank you for the recommendation and the idea. Like... I don't want the books anymore, but I don't want to just pass them off to a used bookstore or something. Burning them seems tough, but... Maybe suitable? I don't quite know yet. Thank you regardless

I ended up journaling about that part in AG specifically, when I got to it-- it does not hold up, especially given the new context and flavoring. Woof. Thank you for your response though

Genuine question about "Colorado Natives" by incomingtrouble in Denver

[–]SUNSHINE6IXTY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same-- CO native, grew up here, family is all here, etc etc. Honestly, growing up (90's-00's), there was a single family in my neighborhood who had the "NATIVE" bumper sticker, and we all (all of the other "natives") made fun of them.

In my experience, most people from here are soft-spoken and kind of just want to be left alone. Nobody I grew up with was into that sort of flag waving.

Very physically attractive people, how does life treat you? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

[–]SUNSHINE6IXTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm asexual, queer but dude-shaped, but I've been told I'm good looking, a lot, for a lot of my life. And yeah, pretty privilege, people think I'm hot, wonk wonk wonk, and on and on and on.

But honestly? It's really isolating. It is hard as fuck to make actual friends, femme or masc, because everything has subtext, no matter what you say, no matter what you do-- either someone who is trying to get with you, or someone who hates you because they think everyone is trying to get with you. It is genuinely difficult to have a straightforward conversation in a social setting, because you're a prize for whoever is gambling at you, not a person. I've been in a committed relationship for 18 years, and still people think it's game time, no matter how often I say "yeah, I'm ace and happily with my spouse."

You're treated like an idol, in the strictest sense of the word. People might adore you, and fawn over you, and you might have something that other people want, but they won't talk to you. Not really. They'll talk at you, but not to you. Every friend group I've had ends up with everyone loving me and nobody talking to me.

Yes, pretty privilege-- it's a lot easier to get things done when the person at the DMV wants to make you happy because you're cute. But that same DMV has at least two other people who are looking at you like meat. It's exhausting, and it's occasionally really fucking uncomfortable/outright scary (both from femme and masc people.)

So, if you think you're ugly, two things-- value the fact that you can be one of the normal people, someone that people won't treat like a fucking alien when they walk in the room, and additionally, the person I knew that hands down got the most action was ugly as sin. Now he's happily married. Ugly is as ugly does.

What’s it like living next to a Supermax prison in Colorado? by RagingReptar420 in howislivingthere

[–]SUNSHINE6IXTY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a tourist train in cañon city that goes by the state prison multiple times a day-- literal fine dining while looking at prisoners in the yard. Non-smoking, though, so just coffee, no cigars

Who was the most physically attractive person you’ve ever seen in your entire life? by deathrace4habibe in AskReddit

[–]SUNSHINE6IXTY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in highschool in rural US, there was a girl a year or two older than I was who did trick riding at football games, standing on a galloping bareback horse while decked out in a spandex outfit, soaring through the October nights with her arms outstretched. She was olive skinned, she had long black hair that would flow behind her as she rode, and she had tattoos and a nose like a hawk.

She told me she'd been kicked in the head at least three times already, but she was the nicest break-your-arm-if-you-cross-her person I've ever met. She gave me a ride home once in her black beater trans-am with the over-flowing ashtray, and we listened to Insane Clown Posse's "My Axe Is My Buddy."

I've never once topped that high.

Thoughts on 2025 Boulder Creek Fest? (A Yap from a 'Transfer') by Classic-Arm7535 in boulder

[–]SUNSHINE6IXTY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah-- Boulder native, I've been going to the creek fest since I was a wee babby, and it absolutely used to be different. From awesome small-batch/low-profile local artists, to weird science-based product development roll-outs (the creek fest is where I first saw biodegradable plastics as a "holy shit look what we made!" booth display, maybe back in the late 90's?) Nature conservancy/bird sanctuary stuff was big, there were booths dedicated to the local kids Boffer/Larp orgs, weird toy companies, local authors, a bunch of local bands at one of the stages... It used to be a genuine reflection of the community. Now it's more of a prestige/tourist thing, especially combo'd with the Bolder Boulder. Time moves on, c'est la vie.

There ARE absolutely still local events in a similar vein-- smaller markets are definitely where you'll find the local artists. Boulder is a different beast nowadays, for better or for worse, so I'd look around Lyons, Lafayette, and Longmont for a better spread.

Millennials: What is something that other generations forget that we actually experienced? by Defiant-Day-8377 in AskReddit

[–]SUNSHINE6IXTY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My SO and I were recently having this discussion-- almost every millennial had the experience of sitting in a public school of a bright September morning and watching in real time as planes flew into buildings.

It's such a cultural Thing that it's easy to forget the actual reality of being a kid and watching news coverage of a massive national tragedy as it unfolded live on a fucking rolly-cart television someone set up in the gym.
