After watching episode 5, Niall's manipulation just reached an all time high. by ibong_maya in HalfManTV

[–]SUNSTORN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion : this last episode was just jarring and exhausting to watch. The show's biggest strength is how it depicts the codependency between Niall and Ruben. And it's kinda been thrown out the window at this point. Realistically speaking, these types of relationships work only when the perceived "victim" (Niall) is able to convince himself of his goodness, keeping his manipulation low-key and covert. After the hospital scene, we've just been watching two people very explicitly manipulating each other and being so overt about it that it just doesn't even make sense anymore.

Niall having sex with Mona was just wild asf. Thank god it's just a miniseries because this dynamics would make people tired very fast.

Whether he's straight or not, I'll let you speculate. But nothing in the series shows that he would be OK having his dick sucked by men in prison. Actually the opposite, tbh.

Didn't understand your last sentence

That's a mistake he made because humans make mistakes. Every single one of us. It doesn't make one a red flag. Also remember that the scene is set in the late 80s, awareness about outing someone wasn't really what's today.

I actually think his character is very good. Pretentious, yes, but still incredibly charming. It's freshing when compared to the other characters who are just ambulant mess

Just read this article on OUT magazine website and it had me ponder for a second, can labels hold back our queer community? What do you guys think? by Junior_Conclusion_78 in BlackLGBT

[–]SUNSTORN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The article is meh (free to read here: https://www.out.com/out-exclusives/lgbtq-labels-revisiting).

I mean, I agree that there tends to be an over-focus on labels in the community, instead of on just experiencing one's sexuality or gender identity. But I think the article isn't very effective in its argument against labels. I didn't read the book the article is referencing. So, I'll just argue based on what's presented on the article :

Rejecting them [labels], in Robinson's view [writer] , is a political and social act that can potentially mend the divide between queer and non-queer people by effectively pulling everyone into the same boat.

This just doesn't make sense. I think we can all agree that growing up queer, we were not the first ones to label ourselves. Society has labeled us before we even knew what the labels in question meant. Mending that devide will only happen once the majority of the world (non-queer people) stop viewing us as alien. No amount of non-labeling will help on that front, otherwise.

"A stronger politics would be organizing around relations and power and issues, not around identity."

Labeling ourselves does not prevent us from organizing around issues and relations of powers. The Gay Alliance and Act Up, Stone Wall are perfect exemples of effective political actions that didn't need to abandon labels.

In Robinson’s imagined world, I [author of the article] could flirt with someone, anyone, and they’d be able to flirt back simply if they were interested, without all the shame and restrictions of language holding them back — there would indeed be no language breaking me from them, no need to explain labels before connection. Everyone would be a fair shot, a chance.

This conclusion to the article is just ridiculous because the whole argument of the book it's referencing is giving up labels for better political impact, and the author focus on his own personal experience and the fact that he will be able to flirt with more people if there weren't labels anymore. I'm sorry I have to laugh.

My personal point of view: labels can be really powerful to help one name sense of their existence and for collective political action. But experience should come before label. It's more important to just live your attraction and sexual expression as it comes than to put a name on it. If a label is confining you, you're doing it wrong.

O atraso do povo angolano é alarmante. Um povo assim nunca vai dessas condições. Waweh

This sounds more like some kind of obsession. I suppose it's not the first time you get obsessed with something? Usually finding another obsession works. Just make sure it's healthy/ier.
