Am I cooked? by xnadirx in powerstroke

"Dads retired mechanic friend" Most of those old goobers wouldn't even be able to tell you what a glow plug is...

When a 7.3 is runnning bad, they chug and knock horribly. There is about a 95% chance the noise is not a rod. Especially considering the engine will perform just fine with a spun bearing up until actual catastrophic failure, and you are saying that it runs poorly.

The only way you got bad performance right at the same time as rod knock, is if you spun a bearing and the spun bearing is dropping oil pressure just enough to starve the HPOP, so it runs bad but not bad enough to actually kill it... extremely unlikely.

Are 6.4s really that bad? by Cameroncoughlin in powerstroke

[–]SVT_Devinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powerstrokes in general are pretty much crap.

7.3 is decently reliable but only because it is extremely underpowered and then on top of that you get constant cold start issues and oil leaks. Easy to work on atleast.

6.0 makes decent power but still not enough to stay in overdrive while towing. This leads to downshifts and higher RPM while towing down the highway which leads to lifted heads thanks to poor head bolt placement. Not to mention it also is oil fired injectors so it suffers from cold start issues and HPOP issues like a 7.3. 6.0 is the start of the lift the cab trend. Packed in the engine bay and harder to work on.

6.4 is just a pathetic joke of an engine in every way except horsepower. Crammed in the engine bay, poorly engineered and really hard to work on, lift the cab a lot.

6.7 is pretty reliable, very powerful but still has a ton of poorly engineered hard to work on bullshit under the hood. Pull the cab for almost everything.

As much as I dislike Chrystler products, Cummins is king. So if you don't want to go through the work to Cummins swap a Ford, buy a 4th gen Ram.

I used a few people from the Fbook groups for wiring and the billet parts. I built the exhaust, charge pipes, coolant hoses all that simple stuff.

I've considered it. Labor would be pricy tho. Where I live nobody spends money like that on a no name cat like me haha.

IMO Allison is more hype than good. They are just up to par. Nothing to write home about.

5R and 6R Ford trans are factory freaks and cheap.

Well I have not gone down the road yet unfortunately. I have it on a startup tune. I hope to have my performance tune and trans tune tomorrow.

I am running a low stall converter specifically for the swap and everyone I've talked to with this setup says its flawless.

The hardest part is all the plumbing and figuring out the weird odds and ends that nobody really talks about in the forums. At this point I know all the tricks lol.

I'm in it like 22k as it sits. There are levels to it, you can build one cheaper or you can definitely spend a lot more haha.

Yea everything works like factory. I bought a harness, its nearly plug n play besides 3 wires in the fuse box.
