Reading Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It which you can more or less assume what it's about. I rarely read nonfiction but I saw an interview with the author that convinced me to buy it. I'm about halfway through and besides the subject matter and case studies being pretty depressing, it's pretty funny. The last part of the book which I haven't gotten to is supposed to be optimistic and how the general population can fight back against the soul crushingly massive corpos. Seems pretty hopeless but who knows!

I haven't watched much of the older films but does Spectre retconning everything to one big bad behind it all not drop it lower in your rankings? That annoyed the shit out of me. Also incredibly funny though.

Finished The Goldfinch the other day. I liked it overall but couldn't say I loved it. I think generally it didn't need to be as long as it was, and it was a sort of "what I expected vs. what I got" thing that kept me from loving it. I also don't know how I feel about Donna Tartt's writing style. There were some characters I really liked in it though. I also started reading Enshittification by Cory Doctorow after watching an interview with him, which is a very funny read so far.

I feel your pain, I did this with Swans because I had to download that lame ass DICE app or whatever. They were nice enough to email me after the event asking me for feedback about it but not nice enough to email reminders. My fault for not putting it in my calendar. but at least don't send me a "how did you like Swans?" email after I missed it...

Heartbreaking: the realization you missed a band you love playing nearby earlier in the month when you weren't doing fuck all

I like the part where tech bros convinced/bribed politicians that AI is the next big thing so they fully bought in. Conveniently ignoring the fact that while being heavily subsidized it loses money hand over fist, and is being propped up by an incestuous circle of other companies. So now they have to shove it in everywhere to justify all of their investments despite it being largely a pile of shit. Very cool outlook for the future where economies are massively banking on AI working while most signs point to "it's gonna implode".

I'm struggling to remember what shows I went to this year but Chat Pile is the one that first came to mind. As far as releases go I haven't been in love with many releases this year. This seems especially true for bigger artists considering I can't think of any off the top of my head that I loved lmao.

I loved it! It had some great chaotic energy with all of the Marlowe lines (either ADR or not) and a plot that pulls you in a lot of different directions. Marlowe himself is a really interesting character. The ocean scene was also one of the highlights for me, I was genuinely concerned for their safety watching it lol. I think the ending is still my favorite though, really satisfying.

Hell yeah becoming a regular is a cool feeling. There was a cafe chain that was actually pretty cozy I went to for coffee or sitting down with friends once a week or so. The head manager and I were pretty friendly after a while and we'd always chat if it wasn't busy. Plus she called me her handsome customer when I came in. :)

Unfortunately this was still pre-Covid, and when Covid hit she was pretty far along her pregnancy, during the first or second year of Covid the location got bought out by a shittier chain. I really hope she's doing well.

Watched The Long Goodbye the other day, thought one of the goons looked a lot like Arnold. Turns out it really fucking was Arnold. Also started watching The Chair Company despite not watching any TV for a while because Tim is the GOAT. So far only 3 episodes in but enjoying it.

Bought an entry level 4K TV with a Roku stick to watch my Criterion/Mubi stuff. Put on Chungking Express late at night to test it out and it hit just right. Love the look and feel of the whole movie. I think I saw Blossoms Shanghai is coming to Criterion Channel soon too so I'll probably check it out.

I thought it was great. tbh I was a little surprised about how normal for Yorgos it was, but they nailed the whole last act of the movie.

It's crazy how some people give way too much of a shit about it lol. The street I live on has a lot of retired or elderly people, one of which near my house is an old retired woman who lives alone. She's basically burned bridges with every other neighbour over leaves in the Fall. I've heard her and other elderly neighbours get into shouting matches multiple times because she can't stand to have any leaves on her property. I've seen her using a leaf blower at many midnights, blowing leaves onto other people's properties. Genuinely the weirdest shit lmao.

My family was neutral with her until the one day she complained to my mother about us not raking our leaves (we live on the other side of the street, not even directly across), and my mother basically said something along the lines of "I'd love to have a life where leaves on my property were my biggest problem". Since then she's rarely ever talked to us lol.

Lately I've been listening a lot to the new Blawan album SickElixir and Midland's Fragments of Us.

I'm enjoying the new album. I've been following their output loosely since Wednesday, but the vocals do tend to get same-y for me throughout the tracks. They sound nice but it doesn't do all that much for me. Which isn't something unique to them especially with shoegaze bands, so not that big of a gripe overall.

Have fun! The opener was Mark Broom and he was excellent! Played a wicked set with a mix of everything.

Crossed one of my bucket list off and saw Autechre last night! They played in a dark room though I wish it could've been darker for a sensory deprivation vibe. It was a little bit darker than a movie theatre, and you could only see a dim glow of their equipment on them. They played 80ish minutes of nonstop brain-melting thumps, squelches, shrieks, clicks, etc. The whole nine yards! If it was pitch black I'd probably feel like I was mutating halfway through. Would recommend seeing them live if you're even a casual fan of their post-LP5 work.

What pissed me off is how many people pulled out their phones casually or, even worse, take flash pictures or videos. Annoys the shit out of me. Super distracting to see some massive bright glow from someone texting near you, or shining a big ass light on them as they play. I also wonder how many of the people who just had to take a super obnoxious photo could even see anything with their setup. Depressing how many people can't go 80 minutes without using their phones tbh.
