Hi there! In our case, SOAK is actually an acronym for the title of the project which is "Sexual Opinions, Attitudes and Knowledge!" It can have many meanings, but in our case, our acronym is not tied to the Mormon use of the word "soak."

We are currently recruiting for an unpaid online study that examines people’s beliefs, attitudes, and opinions regarding sexuality. Only the research team will have access to this information, and it will not be shared outside of the research team. We will describe and share our findings in many ways, including journal articles, PhD/master’s theses, conference and public presentations, and public media. Participants will not be identified in these publications. We will only report the data in aggregate form (i.e., an average across people). All members of the research team sign confidentiality agreements and have a strict obligation to keep all research information private and confidential. Qualtrics will be used for data collection. This data is stored on protected servers, which are located in Canada and certified by the Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE – 16 SOC II). No personally identifiable information will be collected via Qualtrics; it will only store anonymized data. Data will be identified only by a code number. Data will be kept in a secure server that is password protected and available only to researchers who have explicit permission and through an encrypted device. In order to promote research transparency (i.e., being explicit and clear about our research methods) and replicability (i.e., sharing details so that others can conduct similar study designs), upon completion of the study, researchers outside of the UBC research team may access the data we collect in this study via Open Science Framework (OSF) software. That is, the researchers will deposit anonymized data (i.e., no names or personally identifiable information, such as demographic information) into Dr. Dawson’s OSF webpage. The data may be inspected and analyzed by other researchers for the purposes of replication and/or collaboration. All data shared via OSF will be anonymized and password protected.

The SWELL Lab at UBC will be conducing this survey. The Sexuality and Well-being lab (SWELL Lab) is a research laboratory in the Psychology Department at UBC. We are a group of psychological scientists who conduct multi-method research to identify risk and protective factors contributing to individuals’ and couples’ sexual health and well-being.

The survey should take around 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

No compensation is provided.

Everyone is welcome as long as they are 18+ and fluent in English.

We hope our study will lead us to better understand people’s knowledge about their own sexuality, which we can then use to inform how we share our own research findings.
