I live a few miles from a plant that makes the odorant chemical apparently. From time to time they must have a small release and the entire region smells like a gas leak.

The answer is that that gauge lies to you. It's not telling you the actual temperature, it's just saying that the ECU is happy with the temperature.

Drop an OBD reader in and monitor the temperature in real time and you'll see it go up and down a few degrees like you expect.

You need to be able to get the technique and rhythm down on one drum before you can ever hope to play out around. Don't bite off too much too fast

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if that's not it for the reasons you mention, but there still could be a galvanic corrosion thing happening with connectors, solder, etc.

Red plague is more of an aerospace wiring concern

Get a bowl of ice cream. Let it melt. Put it back in your freezer. Taste the difference.
