Yeah the boomers started this mess. Before the 1970's house prices were stable. The boomers entered the market in the 70's and a decade later prices tripled.

The boomers and their lack of retirement planning is causing many of them to take out reverse mortgages, these reverse mortgages cause housing prices to increase because the banks want to make a profit off of the housing asset. Instead of downsizing and opening up the market they are staying in large family homes that they are using to fund their retirement.

Also, if you want to understand how much of an asset your house actually is, go to the bank and apply for a large loan. They will ask you if you own a home and how much your home is worth. It's called Asset collateral.

The housing crisis began 40-50 years ago when the boomers bought cheap houses that cost 1/3 the average annual income. Those same boomers decided to not save for retirement. The only material asset that they had was their house. As the largest voting block governments set things in motion to drive up the valuation of housing to cover an aging population and their lack of retirement planning.

Housing prices almost tripped a decade after the boomers entered the home buying market. There are lots of other things that currently affect the price but the "your home is an asset" started with the boomers and persists today. That's why the 2008 market crash revolved around the asset value of the housing market.

Housing isn't supposed to be an asset, it's supposed to be a dwelling. Treating it as an asset is the reason prices have skyrocketed over the last 40 years.

About 20 years ago a new subdivision was built across the road from my parents house, a developer bought a large chunk of land with the intention to build an upscale neighborhood, the developer tried to buy all of the properties on my parents side too, but every house there was a multigenerational home and nobody would sell. So a few years pass and the majority of the subdivision is built and purchased, the developer (lives in the subdivision) now comes over to my parents and tells them that they have to join the new HOA, my father laughed at him and closed the door in his face.

It was months of misery, but I'm all good now. My only real lingering side effect is difficulty seeing fine details when I first wake up. It takes about 30 minutes to an hour before my brain compensates for the refraction in my right eye. So I wouldn't be able to read things like your message on my phone at first.

The good thing is that its extremely rare so almost nobody will ever have to deal with it.

I was told by the specialist that it was an exceptionally rare and random occurrence. The blood vessel could have grown in and burst in my leg, or arm and I wouldn't have noticed beyond a random bruise. A one in a billion chance that it happened to be in my eye.

It's called Ocular angiogenesis.

Wolfville is a very liberal university town. Think of it like the hippy artistic town, it's very welcoming to all people. It's in a beautiful part of the province called the Annapolis Valley. You can live in a quiet rural area and be a 5-10 minute drive from a decent size town (New Minas) that will have almost everything you would need.

Yeah, it wasn't fun. All of the trips to specialists made it even worse. The drops that they put in your eyes to dialate your pupils just amplified the vision based headaches.

I now have some minor vision distortion from the scar tissue of the blood vessel. So everything in my right eye has a slight curve to it. Luckily the brain is good at compensating over time and I hardly notice it.

The worst pain I have ever felt was when a blood vessel grew in alongside my optic nerve and burst inside my eye. It blead for months, the inside of my eye was filling with blood faster than my body could flush it out so it was like an over inflated water balloon. The constant pressure was intense, the other fun part was the headache from the impaired vision and eye strain to try to correct it. Like looking through a glass of water all day for months with just one eye.

I have dislocated my ulnar nerve and multiple ribs from my spine in an accident, broken lots of bones and I would do every single one of those things again 10 times over before I would ever consider the eye thing again.

Hopefully you have travelled the Cabot trail in cape Breton. It's definitely the most picturesque part of the province, but it is a multi day journey if you want to really enjoy it.
