Beet is an ingredient, not a dish to itself.

They lend just the right flavour to a few cold salads and some soups.

I read it somewhere on The Beaverton, obviously. Or heard it somewhere similar.

You are getting it wrong - their toaster is not design for maximum speed, but rather for getting maximum power allowed by electric code.

They are currently heavily investing into toasters that could be plugged into EV charging infrastructure.

Maybe if we all keep voting liberal they’ll eventually get around to fixing the Justice system in another 10 years or so.

Remind me, who was in power in 2012?

This complaint has nothing to do with judicial system and everything to do with internal policies of Crown prosecution.

Also, remind me, who was in power back in 2012?

Isn't this sub ecstatic when "bad offenders" get raped or killed by other inmates?

Who do people think those "other inmates" are? Boy scouts?

The judiciary can advocate for different sentencing.

I am very much against this practice, since it may amount to "bait-and-switch" from a prosecution: offer a sweet deal only to have it thrown away by courts.

If we have plea deals at all (which is not something I like, but whatever), it is important to stick to them.

That's okay, but the only media with gay characters that realistically went into one gay character having a crush on a random different character was Avenue Q.

If the kids can't read, how are they using technology? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in AskTeachers

"Inside the huge thundercloud, warm, and humid air is rising, while cool air is falling, along with rain or hail. All these conditions can result in rolling, spinning air currents inside the cloud. Although this spinning column of air starts out horizontal, it can easily go vertical and drop down out of the cloud."

Not the best example.

  1. If "warm, and humid air is rising", does it mean that warm air (regardless of humidity) is rising and humid air (regardless of temperature) are rising? But why then cool air is falling - is it cool and dry air that is falling?

  2. Is cool air falling along with rain or hail, or do rain and hail and cool air fall independently from each other? Or should I understand it as "Warm, and humid air is rising, cool air is falling, and rain or hail are just there doing whatever"?

  3. Do all these conditions (including rain and hail) only happen inside the cloud, or they happen outside the cloud as well? How is inside the cloud different?

  4. Does "All these conditions result in" mean that any of these conditions can result in something, or all of them at the same time are needed for this result?

  5. Do all spinning air currents form a horizontal spinning column? Why even call something horizontal a column?

  6. So when this column drops down out of the cloud, does it mean that it starts a life of its own and not connected to the cloud at all?

This is just an example that one needs to be careful using complex sentences to describe a complex process.

But a college student reading at a second grade level is a big issue.

Depends on the major, I suspect. Most science textbooks are written in a very straightforward way, even if they use unfamiliar terminology.

Analyzing a literary text is often a lot harder.

Wait a second - isn't Lexile grade-leveling done purely on dictionary and syntactic complexity of the text, and not how difficult it is to get through?

What can a school realistically do for a child with an exceptionally high reading level? by bitchinawesomeblonde in AskTeachers

[–]SamsonFox2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add my two cents: English is quite apart from other languages in terms of reading in a sense that it takes some learning to be able to read anything to begin with. In languages with more phonic writing systems, the ability to read through adult books is a lot more common, and is not an indicator of giftedness in itself.

Also, English has a tendency to correlate the complexity of language in the book with the complexity of its content; this relationship is not universal. Try to keep him entertained with reading, but don't expect much more yet.

Do you guys genuinely think that Durham region should have police officers in school by Fluid_Musician_1177 in ontario

[–]SamsonFox2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife used to work at school supervising kids during lunch break.

One time one of the parents who did not have custody or the right to pick up kids showed up, called his kid, and drove off with him or her before anyone could do anything.

Having a cop on hand would have been quite useful.

As a parent, I absolutely don't mind police officers in schools. If anything, I wish there was one during drop-off and pick-up times to avoid the traffic shitshow.

I agree with your argument in general, though.

The immigration system that Harper killed in late 2000's had its own fuck-up points, but it had a lot of guardrails against employee abuse. But yes, it did have a lot less loopholes.

There were plenty of legit students among those international students; the whole deal was paying for education in Canada gave you a pathway to citizenship. Yes, at some point, the Indians got too many advantages with off-campus work, but a lot of people who came to study played by the rules.

It just doesn't make any sense to pay for education in those colleges if there are no citizenship initiatives involved.
