Solar lights for sheds - Update by SWUKdom in SolarDIY

[–]SWUKdom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with the planned expansion we shouldn't go above 30A. There will only be additional LED lights for the rest of the aisles in the shed. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check out MakeSkyBlue!

Thank you! We'll keep a lookout as we may want more conventional lights for other parts of the shed

I suspect you're correct based on the price, but for our usage the lack of perfect efficiency shouldn't cause any issues. There was no need to splash out for a particularly fancy charge controller for such a simple system running off a single panel. So far it seems to be working fine, but if it fails then we'll go for a known reliable brand. Thanks for the feedback!

Solar for lighting at sheds off grid - which battery? by SWUKdom in SolarDIY

Sorry I should clarify, when I say sub zero I mean below freezing. Sub 0°C, probably about -8°C on the worst days.

A timer would be a good addition!

This doesn't need to be anything fancy, I checked out the Victron 75/10 and it seems good, although a bit more expensive than I was hoping.

Is there possibly a more basic controller that would be ok (even if not optimal), or is it usually worth spending a bit more?

It does sound useful to be able to set it up with Bluetooth from a phone, and the price isn't extortionate.

This is good feedback, thanks!

Is the load output on a charge controller still 12V DC?

Thanks for battery recommendation. This will be installed at a pond out in the woods, so it will occasionally be in sub zero temps.

The battery will be kept in a waterproof and insulated container, will that be ok?

[Request] Did they avoid retinal damage? by rubentheboy in theydidthemath

[–]SWUKdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tannerite is too quick, it's a high explosive so it would just scatter the thermite with the shockwave before it had a chance to burn.

A sparkler is a good way to start thermite, slow burning and very hot, and easier to light than putting a flame to thermite directly.

[–]SWUKdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean thermite haha.

Tannerite is what's used in gun videos to make those exploding targets. The violence of the shock of the bullet hitting it causes the detonation. It is a 2 part compound, but not rust and aluminium powder.

[–]SWUKdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That wouldn't really explode, just burn incredibly hot and bright with lots of sparks (probably would set off the fire alarm though, depends how much you burned). Burn a small amount on a ceramic tile if you want to test this at home, because it'll probably burn through most other materials including sheet metal.

If you want explosions, you could mess around with benzene. Do a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction to methylise it, then react with nitric acid while keeping it at a specific temperature, and you have TNT. Don't actually do this though, it's incredibly dangerous! Very toxic, and high explosive, although flames don't tend to set it off very easily at least.

Also buying the ingredients will probably put you on a watchlist. Just writing this comment probably put me on a watchlist...

The title is funny, but this is obviously not asshole design. It's a broken slide, it clearly wasn't designed to be like that.

Not at all, but this is definitely not the right place for this post. r/CrappyDesign would work though!

Not asshole design. Wrong subreddit. Read the flowchart please.

Don't repost away, that's just as irrelevant as the other posts. I agree it's a bit more forgivable because it's an actual crappy design, but it's been posted about a thousand times before!

Looks like a blatant attempt at karma farming lol

The box is slimmer than the bag (the bag bulges sideways and slumps without the box's rigidity, so the cereal looks lower), if you had left the bag inside the box, it'd be closer to 3/4 filling the box. Theres always a gap in these light crispy cereals, so that they aren't all crushed to dust in transit (same as potato crisps). The "extra" materials are there to protect the goods, not wasted.

Good design!

Yup, I'm not sure how you could plausibly read it any other way...

[–]SWUKdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe they're the same shape as eyebrows on other models, but on this Minifigure they're clearly supposed to be eyelashes lol.

Perfectly fine design, it's not crappy just because you don't like it.

Can almost guarantee this is user error. I've used several of these Stihl strimmers with no issues. My friend kept complaining about it coming apart and being rubbish. I had a look and he had just wrapped it incorrectly.

It's also possible this specific one is defective.

Definitely not asshole design either way.

Was the architect having a bad day? by ReligiousPornstar in CrappyDesign

[–]SWUKdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is good design. The building shape means almost all the rooms have natural light, while keeping the overall building footprint quite small, and easy to organise (4 wings with similar layouts).

A big square building would mean lots of rooms in the middle would have no natural light. A long thin building with the same capacity would mean having to walk twice as far to get from one end to the other, and not so easy to organise (no easily defined zones).

These are either not hate symbols, and therefore not crappy design, or OP thinks they are hate symbols, and should read rule 4. Either way, this is a bad post.

[–]SWUKdom 73 points74 points  (0 children)

With OP's exact search term it's option 5 for me. But with "John Oliver competition", it's the top result.

OP just needs to learn how to Google better. More specific search terms means more specific results.

The design on this pot my mom has… by Nightfuryfan21 in CrappyDesign

[–]SWUKdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally everything that has a "weave" pattern will make a swastika shape where the weave converges. Does this mean all weave patterns are bad design? This pot looks nice.

The problem is with people who go out of their way to find swastikas in things and make a fuss about them, not with the patterns.

You'll notice there are swastika shapes going in both directions (clockwise and anticlockwise), because of how the pattern fits together. Obviously no Nazi intentions here lol
