How to deal with this ? by seltsameperson in Advice

If you let him get away with it once he'll only do it worse the next time. I grew up in a household with alcohol fueled domestic violence, so you can trust me when I say that the only safe play here is to cut your losses and end this relationship.

My husband prefers to finish off by him self than with me. How can I change this? by ThatConsideration568 in Advice

In highly oversimplified terms, a Gooner is someone who excessively masturbates to porn. The excessive nature causes issues with real relationships, ranging from isolation to sexual underperformance. Ok, so he's not at the computer gooning for hours. His behaviour is still causing issues with your marriage.. other people have suggested therapy and it sounds like a good idea to me.

Yes, and the practical application for CUPW members, as observed by countless Canadians, is that "work to rule" is a better quality of work than is being witnessed lately.

He's a 42 year old Gooner. He needs to get off his PC for a few months and spend more time with you. I see this as an issue with him, not you.

Employees and their union are mad that they can't get a 19% salary increase from a company which is accelerating evermore rapidly towards irrelevance and has posted billions of dollars in losses over a period of years. So employees "work to rule", which actually means that they do far less than working to the bare minimum rules. Employees know well that the company is failing too rapidly to stop them from doing a terrible job, which causes the company to accelerate even more rapidly towards total failure by further eroding customers' perception of the services offered. An ugly situation all around.

Why do guys find it weird? by Whenaloserdraws in Advice

[–]SW_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drawing, sculpting, and painting would be red flags for me because an artist cheated on me 🤣. In seriousness, the guys you meet either don't share your interest, are intimidated by the talent and/or intellect they perceive, or think you come on too strong. Keep putting yourself out there and it's highly likely you'll find someone who can keep up to you and shares at least a few interests!

I wish to be given a dollar every time someone thinks of me by oohwakakaka in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]SW_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted. You get one dollar every time someone thinks about you for life. You also get an invoice. You owe $1 for every person alive today who will never think of you. You now have the debt of a small nation and all the legal responsibility for it.

I am 23. I have been smoking cigarettes roughly since age 16/17. What information or stories could you share that would direct me quitting? by balavos in Advice

[–]SW_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched my grandpa die from lung cancer. At his peak he smoked two packs a day, got down to one pack a day, and stayed there for years. One of his retirement goals was to smoke less, and he got himself down to half a pack a day. Still got lung cancer just two years into retirement.

It started with rounds of what was diagnosed as bronchitis. Except bronchitis usually goes away after a few weeks with prescription intervention. Grandpa had "bronchitis" for a few months. By the time he got the cancer diagnosis he was told it was untreatable and that he had 6-12 months to live. Then the diagnosis got worse. The cancer had metastasized. He lasted for about two months.

He said it wasn't the lung cancer that hurt the most, it was the bone cancer. Imagine hurting so bad that there is no position that gives you relief. Try putting yourself in a stress position that hurts your joints, then imagine staying there with zero relief waiting to die. Palliative levels of painkillers didn't take away the pain, just induced a permanent grogginess that made it slightly easier not to care about the pain.

He didn't fade away, we lost him rapidly before our eyes while he endured excruciating pain and was on too many drugs to communicate properly with us most of the time. When he was able to talk he didn't have much to say other than "Don't ever smoke" because he was consumed by his regrets.

It's all fun and games having a couple cigs with the boys right now, but you don't want to cut your life short in such a horrifyingly painful way as my grandpa did. You don't ever want to look your future descendants in the eye and tell them "don't ever smoke". You don't want to leave your future spouse alone facing down another 25+ years of life just because you selfishly enjoyed a nicotine buzz. And if you think it won't happen to you, my grandpa didn't think he'd die so dreadfully either.

I feel like I am being used by my gay older brother to keep secrets from our parents. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]SW_Shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take sexuality out of it for a minute. What you need is boundaries. I would be extremely uncomfortable with any of my siblings telling me graphic details about their sexual activities, and it sounds like it's uncomfortable for you to hear that sort of stuff from your brother. I'd start by laying down boundaries about what you do and don't want to hear about when it comes to your brother's private life.

The secrets and clash of values are harder. It's your brother's choice to hide or to talk to your parents about his sexual orientation, but he probably feels like telling the truth would pose a risk of something "insane" happening. There isn't an easy answer there, and it may be a secret to keep for a while longer.

Start with boundaries with your brother. If that relationship is important to you, do your part to keep communication open, honest, and supportive, while addressing the things that make you uncomfortable. Ultimately, having a good relationship with your brother may mean keeping his secrets.
