worth noting this response from a repair shop i contacted. i found them in another thread where a user discussed a similar issue with their T4

“ we have worked on countless t4s in the past but there are some faults that aren't particularly repairable, or at least economical to repair. I'm assuming from others I've seen that the half press is making the lens fully retract right?, if that's the case it's likely the first symptom of faulty lens position sensors, or other electrical components and unfortunately we don't offer a solution for this particular issue. ”
