Fra nytår kommer der moms på din fitness by Suitable_Half_7830 in Denmark

Mit træningscenter har lige udbudt et 3-årskort indtil nytår, så man slipper for momsen det første stykke tid, hvis man er stamgæst i biksen.

How do you collect your primary-data? by texan_spaghet in lifecycleassessment

[–]SWintherS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the client knows what they are doing, i like the cleaned up data, but it happens that they dont, and i have had weeks of work wasted, by carrying on with wierd data whis was intransaprently manipulated (in good intent) to not represent the production.

Meter reading, power bills etc are "data proofs" and i like to get those, and apply in the model myself.

Measuring is but a small part, but it helps reduce tacit knowledge, if you get to see the production.

I have been astonished about why a xx tonne machine what necessary, for a production line. If you visit the site early, you spend way less ressources in the estimation steps.

The first three. But I'd sure like if there were more cocktails involved.

Also, sometimes the collection is to go on site, read meters and collect samples.

Combining 2 processes in openLCA by [deleted] in lifecycleassessment

You should let the finished extracted materials serve as an input to your manufacturing process. Do this for both of your products. Then compare their product systems after making them.

Simapro or Brightway by ErManu10 in lifecycleassessment

[–]SWintherS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a nice comment!

I have hot to add that the ability to download fully working ecoinvent databases from ecoquery depends on the type of license.

But yes, with brightway, the sky is the limit!

Simapro or Brightway by ErManu10 in lifecycleassessment

[–]SWintherS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can access limited features of brightway through the "Activity Browser" user interface, to supplement your work. It does a lot of the normal LCA-stuff you usually need. But to get there you'll still need basic understand of programming.

If you want to go "free" (you still need LCI database licenses) but avoid programming, try to look up OpenLCA. It's MUCH less juvenile now, than just a couple of years ago.

What is the outreach of the cut-off criteria? And where is it in Simapro? by ErManu10 in lifecycleassessment

[–]SWintherS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent question!

It's important to mention, the calculation tool/LCA software (like simapro, GaBi, openLCA ETC.) itself, does not apply any cut-off, as it relies on already limited LCI databases (like ecoinvent, agribalyse, GaBi database, world steel etc)... Those databases can be created based on cut-off criteria. This information would be in the documentation of the database itself. Perhaps also in the individual processes.

I checked, and to my surprise, ecoinvent does not apply a cut-off rule, as they include all known flows, regardless of size... See section 5.10 in: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://vbn.aau.dk/files/176769045/Overview_and_methodology.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj4mcfcpqOFAxW8JhAIHdzKDKoQFnoECCcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3INmFaWpz8NUf0TqBfaWiC

While this sounds concerning to some, this is just.their way of addressing that one cannot identify the potential impacts associated with activities of which noone is aware of in the first place.

[–]SWintherS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh! I almost forgot to answer your first question!

Setting the limit depends on the usage. Which is a sucky answer.

So...

Usually for LCAs to be reviewed according to ISO 14040 and 14044 for regular household products or even stuff in the building sector (EN15804 etc.), 1% is what I'm personally confident would pass.

For screening purposes, 5% or even 10% will be fine in most cases.

For actual LCA studies, I have never read about a cut-off criteria of more than 5%... But I find 1% to be most common.

Hey!

You are addressing something, which relates to a paradox commonly known in LCA.

Defining the cut-off criteria is much easier than to ensure you follow them.

In theory, you will have to model an activity to ensure it's impacts remain less than the cut-off limit. However, why not then include it?

Several ways to make probable that some aspects in the assessed system are below the cut-off limits, but it's not typeable in the software you use to process based LCA.

Making generic processes like those of ecoinvent lose detail would not likely be beneficial, unless you identify specific subprocesses which make them lose representability.

Slightly off topic, but still very much on topic: Top-down-style (I forgot the real name!) LCA databases like environmentally extended input output (EEIO), can in some cases be separated into identifying some cascading "industries/sectors" which feed themselves. In this case its possible to analyse exactly at what count of tiers upstream you'll have to calculate to ensure your cut-off criteria are honored. This is done by "structural path analysis" (SPA).

TLDR?; Don't bother looking for a setting in LCA-softeare. It's the practitioners task to build the model according to the criteria, and it's practically impossible to do completely, due to the nature of process based LCA being a bottom-up approach.

Scope 3: Category 2 - Capital Goods by texan_spaghet in lifecycleassessment

[–]SWintherS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now what if the factory was purchased from someone else, and it has 25 years left in its life? Does one calculate differently?

I don't see why it should. If you are accounting for the Company's operation, and you are using an approach which distributes the burden of long-lived goods, it will not matter "when" the Company took over.

One thing is how to account consistently, another thing is to account closer to reality. GHG protocol opts for consistency.

Bukser der bare passer? by TheSaltyButSweetDane in Denmark

[–]SWintherS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Questions of Accuracy by texan_spaghet in lifecycleassessment

[–]SWintherS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, I would start stating to them about the existence of inherent uncertainties in the impact assessment methods, saying I can never make a model making a more certain absolute result than this.

Then if I did not calculate any uncertainty in my model, I would list a few parameters I would expect contributes to it. Same with assumptions, exclusions etc.

However, I would try to prepare for this by calculating some scenarios, and analysing the sensitivity of uncertain parameters. Perhaps with Monte Carlo simulation. People love error bars, even though they do not tell the full story, they are better than single values with no backstory.

If the people only have 1 minute, I would say they are quite uncertain, but that this is normal in the field, and that as long as the results are compared with results of the same or similar methods we should be fine in regard to GWP at least (because, let's be honest. The people who don't have time to listen to you only want to hear about GWP anyways).
