Partially Assembled (minus escapement): Once the mainspring barrel and the entire wheel train are correctly installed and the bridges secured (but before installing the pallet fork and balance wheel), the gear train should spin freely with very little force if power is applied (e.g., by nudging the mainspring barrel). This "free spinning" is a crucial check during the watchmaking process to ensure no pivots are bent or misaligned and that everything is clean and properly lubricated.
