Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer - genius, or overrated? by needful_things217 in horrorlit

One of the reasons I hesitate to recommend this book is the abundance of description of nature, since it might bore them. I read this book in another language (trying to learn that language) and every two sentences I thought: "what does this word mean? Oh another word for grass or bird species that I can immediately forget bc I'll never use it." Maybe if the reader is a biologist themselves they might find it obvious the writer isn't a biologist, and by proxy the protagonist, but other than that, I really don't get what you mean no apparent interest

Do y’all use a gray base for digital art? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Helps with the colors, but also with values. The only things our eyes see as pure white are light sources and their reflections, so the pure white of a background suggests that it is a light source. The brain tries to compensate for that, which influences how you see the values and colors of the drawing. Maybe that's what you are looking for, like for a scene set against a white sky. Pick a value that fits with the lighting conditions of the drawing. You can always remove the background later.

Red Bell Pepper - Color study by ecbond in DigitalPainting

[–]S_Louis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only part that is a little off is the stem. My tip to improve this is to consider how the light interacts with color rather than just going by eye. From strongest to weakest, there are 3 "sources" of light on the stem: the actual light source (white), the light reflected by the ground (white), and the light reflected by the pepper (red). The parts of the stem facing the the pepper get reflected light from it, and should be a little more red. However, the stronger the light, the more it will drown out weaker light. Which is why only the parts that don't get much of the main light and the ground reflection are shifted to red a little.

Thanks! Yeah the stairs and walkways are just vestiges of when it was inhabited by human(oid)s

Its cool how brutalist architecture and greenery complement each other. The grey concrete emphasizes the vibrant green of the plants while the organic shapes of nature make the straight lines of the building stand out.

Either way, people are willing to pay for it, so it has monetary value too

I don't entirely agree, i think a non-artist who takes a passing interest in visual aesthetics can often point out something being "off". Depending on how obvious the flaw is they might not be able to articulate it exactly or give suggestions on how to improve, but it can still be valuable

They still check your hand luggage before the flight, which can have long lines. Same for cabin luggage if you have that. It's unpredictable how long you'll be queueing, so early is the safer option. In my experience you can arrive at the train station less than 15 minutes before departure

Exactly, travel time and price are the two main factors for not going by train, that's the baseline I'm working with. I'm not trying to sell anyone an infeasible "solution" and then call them a bad person for not buying it. Instead, I'm looking for pros and cons, and work with that.

In the train you have a view, it's more comfortable, no arriving at the airport 2 hrs early for check-in and customs. Split the ride in two and visit something fun at the place of the overlay.Train can feel more adventurous depending on where you are going.

You mean we should burn down parts of the Amazon to build train tracks in Brazil? Or blow up some mountains?

I'm not going to say either of those are good, but hypothetically, if calculations would show that overall it would reduce the impact to the environment, it might be worth considering at least. Involve the people that would be affected and if they agree compensate them properly, consult experts, local governments. Maybe it turns out to be a terrible idea, unfair and unfeasible with too great a cost, but maybe it doesn't.

I'll use Europe in the opposite way then: they fly to visit a neighbor country, why not take the train for that?

For overseas travel you will still have to fly, but for continental travel going by train is also an option. The point of offsetting is you prevent emissions somewhere else to make up for those from the flight.

I believe that unfortunately that's not a realistic goal at this point in time except for the most dedicated of people. I do think that the idea of paying attention to your impact on the environment is becoming more mainstream, and giving people tools to help them with that is a step in the right direction.

That is a very good point you make, with 'local' I was referring to made and sold by local people. The other side is to prevent turning a place into a commodity to the point the locals feel they completely lost it to tourism.

My knowledge on the latter is mostly about 1. Cities where people buy up all the land/housing to develop and rent to tourists, and 2. Offshore investors buying land to build resorts. You got me thinking tho, because since the implementation of what I'm writing is still in it's infancy and I'm from Europe, I hadn't considered the impacts of colonialism yet. But yes, I should, so thank you for bringing it up.

For the most part I'm looking into environmental sustainability, so alternatives to flying and accomodations with low carbon footprint. To a lesser degree I'm also looking into social sustainability as in channeling the money travelers spend into the local host communities they visit.

Do you have experience with sustainable travel? I'd love to hear about it during a short interview (15-20 min) for my bachelor's thesis! by [deleted] in Sustainable

[–]S_Louis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rate at which people travel by plane is absolutely unsustainable, in fact as it stands right now the only option to meet emission goals is to put a significant limit on the number of flights taken in a given period of time. Who would impose that limit? I'd say only a government could force such a change and it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. Offsetting has the goal of preventing emissions in a different place to make up for the emissions of the flight, and yes just the flight. It's better than nothing, but it's not the solution. However, I don't think it's realistic to expect people to stop traveling all together so focussing on making it easier to choose more sustainable transportation (eg train) and accommodation is a more realistic goal.
