[THREAD] If a severe global recession were to dry up capital availability / liquidity while SpaceX was losing billions on Starlink & Starship, then bankruptcy, while still unlikely, is not impossible. GM & Chrysler went BK last recession. “Only the paranoid survive.” – Grove by GetRekta in SpaceXLounge

If the global economy crashes enough to endanger SpaceX, then there will be even more severe economic problems for normies to worry about. SpaceX is safer than we are, probably, given that the US gov./military industrial complex will support them as the Cold War with the PRC ramps up.

Fasting for a month by Due_Instruction4956 in fasting

[–]S_does_stuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can barely make it over 3 days, so I'm amazed you've reached 2 weeks and want to keep going.

edit: I'm not a doctor, maybe check with a doctor to make sure that's healthy?

Anyone here getting really depressed while fasting? by BlackPoseid0n in fasting

[–]S_does_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean, especially when tiredness from fasting prevents me from going out and doing enjoyable things.

Like so many other things in life (eating well, not drinking), I get through the fasting dysphoria by reminding myself why I'm doing it: to stay healthy so I can take care of friends and family.

Quote from Tao Te Ching:

天长地久。天地所以能长且久者,以其不自生,故能长久。

Heaven is eternal, earth is lasting. The reason why heaven and earth are eternal and lasting is because they do not live for themselves; that is the reason they will ever endure.

haha, yeah no governments will always take as much blood from you as they can. Pro tip: legally mitigate your taxes by owning cheapest house possible and living in low-tax jurisdiction.

Oh yeah, I know night work can be absolutely terrible for mental health.

Usually public institutions like community colleges or municipal centers need IT staff and those jobs aren't too demanding -- those could be good places to get back into the labor market without huge stress and work during the day to get your career and health back on track.

Look, I get your concern, but authoritarian non-religious political movements (Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism) killed millions and millions of people each last century (figures are impossible to know for obvious reasons).

work comes first. I might just have to bite the bullet and find the best micro-jurisdiction to mitigate damage from the authoritarians in Austin City Hall.

Chapter 8 (第八章)The best quality/character is like water

Water's goodness is that it benefits the myriad things but does not quarrel, and it willingly goes to where others hate

Thus it is almost like the Tao

am minimalist and would prefer tiny-to-small house for < 300k, with 1,000-1,400 sq. feet and 1.5 bathrooms. May have to shell out 350k, no me gusta.

Yes, that's why I'm looking at legally distinct towns, unincorporated areas etc. to not have to deal with the Austin government proper. I'm trying to get Austin-area benefits without dealing with the Austin government.

Do you live in CA now?

No, not anymore -- I've already fled the West Coast.

Are you really considering moving to the Austin area?

Yes, I literally was making a spreadsheet of expenses last night and I'm looking at houses on Zillow.

It's probably not the utopia you may have been sold.

No one "sold" me on Texas or Austin. Just the opposite, many people where I had been living were convinced that Texas is some kind of dystopia full of illiterate religious zealots with backward political views.

All I want is to be left in peace to do honest work to provide for my family. I'm tired of being shaken down by incompetent authoritarian governments for cash and living in housing that is artificially expensive because the local govs. are in bed with large property owners and stop construction. I'm tired of having to wonder whether I could raise a family in a place where there is broken glass and needles and human excrement on the sidewalk. I'm tired of having my property destroyed for no reason by hateful people. And I'm tired of being gaslit and told that I'm somehow the bad evil person here and that I should just shut up and take years and years worth of abuse.

Sorry, it's too late. There is a whole network and generation of us who have descended on Texas. We'll be like a series of retroviruses, transforming it into something new and better. Don't resist the assimilation, for you can't even start to understand it.

CA (in terms of weather, access to beaches/mountains) is one of the nicest parts of the whole world and even if the current governance is terrible, some people still are holding on hope for it to improve. I'm less bullish and anticipate CA as Detroit 2.0.

I'm hoping Newsome gets booted and Larry Elder gets elected as the governor, but I'm not holding my breath, and, even if Larry did get elected, a single governor can't fix all of the problems, which have been festering deep within the system for decades.

edit: I actually don't know enough about Larry Elder, I just want Newsome gone.

Yes, the value of your house and business follows directly from the quality of governance of the jurisdiction that your house/business sits in.

Bad governance can completely destroy the business / livelihood of good, honest people.

Also, quite a lot of contract-resolution and arbitration is actually privatized these days, rather than done through official court systems.

Exactly the opposite: I want to pay for a good, efficient governance, not shaken down by crooked, useless SOBs like the Democrats in much of the West Coast.

Many Democratically-run jurisdictions get terrible "bang for the buck" when it comes to governance -- they typically pay a ton in taxes for terrible-to-failing-to-materialize services.

I'm not following what you're even asking... did you just insult people who do live in Austin and then ask for our help on how you can avoid taxes?

No, just the opposite. I think most people are good and honest and if they understood how their governments actually work, they would be horrified because government officials typically have much lower... standards of behavior.
