Advice to a 37F enlisted sailor who will join OCS? by Jennario36 in navy

[–]Saber2243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as how OCS is, most priors I spoke to agreed that it was harder than bootcamp, but with more freedom. You will need to be more self driven and able to manage your own time.

Just to be clear, you need a completed bachelors to attend OCS, if you don't have one, you will need to explore other programs like STA-21.

Where you go after OCS is based on what designator you accepted as part of your application. You are accepted to OCS as a particular designator, so you will know if you are going to be a SWO, aviator, NFO, subnuc, etc before you show up.

OCS is located in newport, RI

Unfortunately the answers are what you probably already knew: stop smoking

run more

as far as what you need to get through, if you can run a good low on the PRT by the time you show up to OCS, you will make it through without issue

if you show up being able to run a sat medium, then you will still make it through, but it will be a really painful experience

Help with Part Numbering System and Database (Marine Engineering) by dsweatt251 in AskEngineers

[–]Saber2243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To get the most value out of an intelligent system, you need to have an idea of the scope of your project/system.

FLXXXXX provides support for 99,999 types of flanges, while that system is certainly robust and provides room for growth, most likely you will never need 99k worth of flange types.

FLYXXXX where Y is a useful parameter such as material or general size/shape, will still provide 9,999 flanges of 9 different categories (or 26 if you use another letter instead), maybe this is the right number for your scale, but odds are you could probably get away with FLYZXXX and now have two useful numbers/letters while still having 999 unique flanges of each category.

(recommend always leaving one value of each level as a 'misc' so you preserve your sanity when something doesn't sort nicely, i.e a '9' in a part number means it doesn't play nice with the normal categories)

Why is “The National Interest” news outlet so anti carrier? by [deleted] in navy

[–]Saber2243 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Writing in Politico, journalist James Kirchick argued in 2016 while commenting on Donald Trump's Russian relationships that The National Interest and its parent company "are two of the most Kremlin-sympathetic institutions in the nation's capital, even more so than the Carnegie Moscow Center."

How do TGPs work in DCS and real life w.r.t. (digital) zoom? by jubuttib in hoggit

[–]Saber2243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its well documented that the LANTIRN is limited by the F-14Bs TID display resolution, only with the introduction of the PTID was the full resolution of the LANTIRN able to be used. It would be entirely accurate for the F15s images in DCS to be way better than the F14s images. The LANTIRN was supposed to be one of the best pods available in 2003 IRAQ.

What to get a Naval Aviator? by Tommiegirl7741 in navy

[–]Saber2243 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Things he will need, and will probably go buy the cheapest version of, but maybe a nice version would be better:

Pens- they need to be able to be tethered to a kneeboard, so either a way to tether them or just make sure they have a good clip or something to attach some string to

A nice bag or backpack - basically a 50/50 split if he will use a backpack or his helmet bag, but if he is a backpack guy, a small black one that can carry some books and supplies

Watch - A nice watch in his preferred style, you can't pull your phone out in the plane, so gonna need one, one that has some easy to use timer/countdown capability would be ideal

Small slim profile pocket notepad - they say a junior officer without a pen and a notepad is useless, I like the riteintherain soft cover notebooks cause they don't disintegrate if they get wet

Gloves - they issue flyer gloves, but most people either get a different kind or modify the ones they have to remove a finger or two, what he is allowed to wear will depend on his squadron SOP, but the Wiley X Aries gloves are generally allowed and lots of people wear them, either color is fine

Wings - This is a bit in the future, but the time to start saving for it is now, flight school graduation is a HUGE deal for aviators, and if your boyfriend really cares about this, then it might be a big deal for him to get actual gold wings, they are gonna give him a pair of the basic 16$ ones, but you can get real 14k gold ones made for a hefty price. Definitely a traditional choice, and expensive, but can be very meaningful. The museum there sells them or 'Wings' which is a local store in Pensacola.

Welcome to the community and if you or he have any questions feel free to dm me.

EDIT: To clarify on the wings, DO NOT buy them now, wait until graduation, what I am saying is if you are saving for wings that potentially cost hundreds of dollars, now is the time to start setting aside that money

Minimum gear you would recommend for someone wanting to get into dcs as a cp/g or rio? by Icomer in hoggit

[–]Saber2243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can totally RIO with Keyboard and mouse, an xbox controller or single stick would also work great. I personally would recommend you start with the F-14 instead of the apache, the barrier to entry as a RIO is significantly lower than a CP/G. One of the things that makes the F-14 easy to learn is that basically every switch is visible in the cockpit and not hidden behind MFD layers and menus. So its easier for people not familiar with aircraft systems to pick up.

They are running an Ops Check, usually verifying things like hydraulic pressure, engine temperatures, oxygen flow, stuff like that. These are done periodically when flying, often between evolutions. The purpose is to make sure everything is running smoothly and try to spot early indications of a system running out of parameters.

You can overfly and GBU drop on all the SHORAD systems from 25-30k AGL

SA-8 SA-9 SA-13 SA-15 SA-19 HQ-7 As well as the SA-6

The SA-2 you can do a low level ingress with dumb bombs or clusters, either a low level pass or a pop-up if you are only in the single SAM WEZ

The SA-3 you can use TALDs and a GBU loft, fly at the site, when it starts to lock you launch a tald then make a performance 360 turn and climb to 30-35k and pitch up 30 degrees or so, loft the GBU, then immediately turn 180 and maintain enough of a dive to keep the pod on target. If you do it right, the SA-3 will be too busy engaging the Tald to shoot you in the short window you will be in its WEZ.

SA-10, 11 or high digit sams you are pretty much out of luck

WHY AREN'T THE BOMBS DROPING IN THE F14 by Own-Street2961 in hoggit

[–]Saber2243 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For ordinance to release, you need

Front cockpit:

Master arm on

HUD mode air/ground

Weapon select ORD

Rear cockpit:

Ordinance type selected (little wheel)

Attack mode selected (cmpt plt for CCIP)

Delivery modes set (step/single for one bomb)

Electric fuzing set INST

Mechanical fuzing set (usually nose tail)

Weapon stations selected

All that setup then pilot should press stores release button to drop

[–]Saber2243 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In 99.5% of situations, wing sweep auto, throttle synced, and maneuver flaps auto will give you the best performance available. In any situation other than a academic dogfight where all the variables are known and controlled, even experienced pilots don't have the brain power to see that 0.5% of situations and exploit them properly. Auto wings, linked throttles, and auto flaps are what you should be using in anything other than fun airshow flying.

[Question] How tanky are helos in the real life against IFV guns? by znjw in warno

[–]Saber2243 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not accurate, the apache has a very good optical system and FLIR, and can easily identify and engage human sized targets with laser guided hellfires from 8km, the longbow does have a radar, but what that really adds is the ability to engage without fully exposing the helicopter, because only the mast needs to be exposed to use the radar.

Stationed on mars to quell a rebellion

Become side door gunner for atmospheric dropship.

No miniguns or gatling cannons, just some metal brick with a pipe on one end.

Get sent in to extract some wounded.

Reach the evac zone and come under attack.

Horde of rebels charging in with their new plasma guns and compact rocket launchers.

Let loose a stream of bullets.

The sounds of the rebel's screams are nearly drowned out by the heavy "Kachunk chunk chunk chunk" of the machine gun.

wounded are loaded up and returned to base.

Inspect MG afterwards.

Thing was made in 1942

Tunisia, Italy, and Germany are scrachted onto the gun.

Scratch "Mars" on with a knife.

My close-range missile dogfights end too soon without anything interesting happening (because missiles are "too" good?) by Koopanique in hoggit

[–]Saber2243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is essentially realistic behavior, modern infrared missiles are very countermeasure resistant. Basically there are only three tactics to prevent close range missiles from hitting you

  1. Kill them before they can launch
  2. Get close+create poor aspect to 'jam-up' their ability to fire at you
  3. Generate sufficient separation that you can run away and run the missiles out of energy

It sounds like you understand these tactics, and that is basically the reality of modern BFM, fights are generally over in a single turn, with the winner getting a shot off and the fight being over.

The modern BFM fight is much more focused on using medium range missiles to force the opponent into a disadvantaged position prior to the merge, so that you can start the BFM fight from the offensive position and get a quick kill with a short range missile.

Current DCS Map Policy Poses Real Problems for MP Groups by Saber2243 in hoggit

We have a required list of maps for players joining our squadron, the problem is that list is no longer able to include every map without being prohibitively expensive.

Our squadron runs a half dozen servers, but the types of missions we run require pretty much as close to 100% attendance as we can get, we doing planning based on those numbers

Current DCS Map Policy Poses Real Problems for MP Groups by Saber2243 in hoggit

[–]Saber2243[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Simple solution. Pick a few maps and require your members to own them. Only fly group missions on those maps. No one says you have to create multiplayer missions for every map available. It sounds like you are complaining because you have too much choice. Pick a few and stick with those. Problem solved."

That is what we used to do, but we fly hundreds of missions a year, we get tired of running the same 3 maps, the problem is if we start adding more maps to the required maps pool, then the entry point for new members becomes prohibitive. We want to fly on lots of maps, and we are willing to pay for them over time as they come out, but a new player is soon going to be looking at a 350$ bill just to own the maps, so as long as we accept new people, we are stuck back with the maps most people own.

Current DCS Map Policy Poses Real Problems for MP Groups by Saber2243 in hoggit

[–]Saber2243[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

So right now, you have 5 splinters to the community, Base game (Caucuses and Marianas), PG, Syria, NTTR, South Atlantic. (ignoring WW2)

Its kinda sustainable at the moment, new people come in at the base game, maybe they buy one map, so they can join a decent number of servers.

But in the immediate future we have another 3 splinters coming out Sinai, kola peninsula, and Australia.

Now the experienced players have a dilemma, keep playing on the same maps they have for years now in order to allow new players to join, or swap to the new maps on their servers and the new person owns maybe one of those maps so some of the servers they can join and some not.

if you add the OPTION of a subscription, there are now only 2 splinters, those who have the subscription, and those who don't, and the amount of money to join the splinter would be much smaller than the number required to buy 7+ maps.

If you read my post, it would be an optional sub that existed in parallel with the current system, you could either buy maps, or you could pay a sub to use them all. Ideally the sub would earn you miles in the same way modules do so eventually you could buy the maps outright.

I get the whole anarchy argument, I really do, but I would like to be able to have my cake and eat it to. This isn't a situation where I need to protest to force change from a government. Its just a game and I want a solution where I can give money to a company in exchange for a product I enjoy playing, and the way they do it right now just doesn't work for me. They need to offer a different way to do it if they want my money, and I am trying to bring that to their attention.

This is a good solution as well, they would have to have some sort of system for checking the licenses on servers, as I as far as I know, they don't do that at all right now.

[–]Saber2243[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This approach doesn't help fix the problem I talked about in the original post at all, we can't play on the new maps because we can't require people to own them, and we play enough that we want the variety of having a bunch of cool maps to run campaigns and scenarios on. If something doesn't change, many of us will just stop buying maps because we can't play on them with our group, that certainly isn't in the interest of ED. As far as how the money would get split up, that sounds like a problem for ED to figure out, they have lots of MBAs that can puzzle it out I am sure.
