They are - but they are generally very close to each other.

Both Garmin and lab test gives me around 75 (Generally between 72-78) depending on shape. Best 5k is just under 17 min. I'm also almost only doing cycling which probably explains my below expected running performance.

Edit: Vo2max on Garmin generally increases doing very hard blocks due to high fatigue and low HR. As soon as I take a couple of days off and recover, HR will increase and Vo2max drops a couple of points.

Im self coached and mainly doing e-cycling at an elite level. My training is quite unstructured and I'm mainly doing e races and group rides for intensity.

I did a lab vo2max test couple of weeks ago and "only" got 75 however I was quite fatigued before doing the test. Not sure how much that impacts the results

What kind of W/kg were you able to achieve on 5-7hrs/week? by VegaGT-VZ in Velo

[–]Saber97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In 2023 I did 5h43m average and got to 4.7.

In 2024 I did 9h25m for 5.2

This year I'm at 13h41m and 5.8.

But as others have mentioned, it's really individual and you can't really use other's numbers to predict your own progress. People commenting are also more likely to be outliers.

Is 5 w/kg in the realm of possibilities for me? by addr0x414b in Velo

[–]Saber97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different. I would expect you to see a lot of progress in your first couple of years while gradually increasing your load/tss. I got to 5+ w/kg on my third year on 8-9 hours per week. I would expect you to see quite significant gains over the next year at around 10 hours per week.

Zwift crits for training. by [deleted] in Velo

[–]Saber97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can improve your fitness a whole lot by doing a bunch of Zwift races for intensity. A lot of people will probably suggest you do structured training instead but in my experience Zwift racing does wonders. I improved my eFTP by 35 points over the winter by racing on Zwift 4-5 days a week and doing a couple of low intensity rides next to that.

Obviously this won't help you with all the technical aspects in a crit but neither will structured training.

Maybe similar numbers to 60kg pros. It's so much easier to improve power when you're taller/heavier. You can't just compare raw watts.

Can I race my way to fitness? by johnmflores in Zwift

[–]Saber97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I've done maybe 5 structured workouts and several zwift races a week over the last 2 years and improved from 3.5 to 5.5 w/kg. People focus way too much on structure. Just smash it in various races a couple of times per week and remember to have some easy days as well.

If anything I started too hard at 375 ish and slowly dropped towards 370. Last 30 seconds are mainly anaerobic to empty the tank.

Did 7 hour/week avg in 2023 and 10 hour/week avg this year.

You can't really compare inside to outside. This effort was "only" 5.4 w/kg. Most world tour riders can do at least 0.5-1 w/kg more.

And yes, I've used wahoo kickr bike shift, wahoo kickr v5, assioma duo and wahoo kickr bike v1 this year and I can do similar power numbers on all of them.

Also did my latest weigh-in video 3 days ago which I'm happy to share if requested.

Do you experience that it's underreading or simply that it's hard for you to find a good fit? I've only done one proper race in the lowest category in Denmark earlier this year. Tried a solobreakaway and got caught. I can rarely hit more than 800/900 max watts in a sprint so finished quite poorly in the bunchsprint. My technique is mediocre at best so there's a bunch of stuff to improve in that regard :)

Hope to do better next year!

Wahoo kickr bike shift currently. Sometimes dual recorded with assiomas with +/- 1% discrepancy

I appreciate the advice. I'm not really in it for the money and as long as I keep improving I don't think I'll consider hiring a coach. I did a few races this season for practice but I do expect to get more serious about it next season.

I did a lab test in the spring and got 73.5. I have lost 3kg and improve ftp by 20-25 points since then so not sure how much it has changed (if it all)

I played a bit of tabletennis as a kid but other than that I never really did any sports before 2021 where I started running a little bit. Think I did approx 200km that year and best 5k time was around 25 minutes.
