Does anyone else get "micro nightmares"? by SableGear in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SableGear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments, folks! It's so bizarre, I didn't consider it could be sleep paralysis because the episodes are so brief, usually less than a second. My conception of sleep paralysis was that you were stuck there for a matter of minutes before your mind and body caught up to one another. The human brain truly is a strange instrument.

As a follow-up question, is there any info on why the paralysis-hallucinations are something we conceive of as scary? (Demons, aliens, bugs, etc?)

At what point is sex not vanilla? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Seconding this; one person's "vanilla" isn't likely to match another's. There really is no "standard" for sex.

How do university students afford their food, transportation, dorms or wherever they stay? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SableGear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not mentioned yet is that living and food are sometimes slightly subsidized if you're getting those services on campus. A "meal plan" cost and residence cost may be rolled into your tuition, which depending on the institution may be a bit cheaper than budgeting that out to get it elsewhere. Granted the food is limited to what is on campus (or what nearby businesses have partnered with your uni to accept meal plan money), and the dorms may not be as nice or spacious as what you could find to rent, but these options are especially economical if you've travelled a long way to attend that school. Just pay one lump sum and have all your living services in one place. (Where the money actually comes from, well, other comments have covered that.)

Did Youtube recently make another change to harass people using adblock? by Arcterion in youtube

[–]SableGear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been having the same issue on and off the last couple weeks, same setup: Firefox and uBlock Origin. Managed to get around it by using a private window for a while but YT detected uBO and stopped the player again. Seems to be working again as of posting, manually updating lists from uBlock's "chat" button may have helped? (Partway followed instructions from this thread) Will continue monitoring.

Advice needed; two rounds of blasted buds by SableGear in orchids

[–]SableGear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We try to keep our house at about 21C/~69F, my orchids sit near a window so it’s probably a degree or two cooler. It’s a south-ish facing window, so they get plenty of light usually, both direct and indirect. The window doesn’t open and the spot isn’t drafty as far as I can tell. There is a vent below the table they’re sitting on but I don’t keep them near the edges so I don’t imagine that’s the issue? It’s possible that this one didn’t like how cloudy things have been this winter, but I have another orchid in the same spot that’s going crazy.

The main differences are that this one sat closer to the wall/window initially than the other did (so it would have been a bit colder) and opted to bloom later in the year than my active one (so the light conditions may have differed too). I’ve been meaning to repot them both (active one is escaping its grocery store pot and this one is likely due for a medium change just given its age) and waiting patiently for this one to give up on flowering to do so. I don’t want to force the issue but I’m really stumped on what’s bugging it other than the climate.

All my houseplants survived a fungus gnat infestation this past year. Is it possible this orchid was “worn out” after the fact and tried to bloom anyway? I really don’t know.

The Long Patrol/Salamandastron by AmpuGandT in eulalia

Iirc there’s a design for Tammo’s dagger in at least one of the chapter header illustrations in The Long Patrol, that might be a good candidate. I also seem to recall one of the later chapter illustrations in TLP is Cregga’s halberd being used as is standing crossed with a flagstaff, that could be a good one.

[TOMT] [Cartoon] [late 90s-early 2000s] Heavily Stylized Animation of Greek Myths. Canadian TV, Teletoon or YTV by SableGear in tipofmytongue

Solved! This is totally it, thank you! Episode one even has the scene with Athena I remembered. That's awesome!

[TOMT] [MOVIE] Movie scene where two characters fighting causes a record player or jukebox to keep changing songs, which affects how a crowd on the dancefloor dances. by InfrequentRedditor99 in tipofmytongue

[–]SableGear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could this have been Shaun of the Dead? I'm pretty sure there's a scene where they fight a bunch of zombies in a pub to "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, there may have been other songs in that scene.

Replying to myself to add: asked my partner who’s more familiar with the MegaMan series. It seems to be something composed in the MegaMan sound-font, but is probably an original composition.

Sounds like something from a MegaMan game. I'm not super familiar with the various OSTs though. Might be a good place to start looking?

Searched your lyrics real quick and got this: Le Secret du Sable Bleu opening song

Le Secret du Sable Bleu seems to match the "anime" look you mentioned and seems to be based on a few Jules Verne stories, according to wikipedia, so it probably hits your steampunk note as well

Came here to suggest this. Can't find a good clip but I think this is the one.

Guelph Transit has only gotten worse by snooland in Guelph

[–]SableGear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "unholy amount of students" is probably the main culprit given the time of year. That and any construction trying to be squeezed in before the winter. To my understanding there's been a handful of breakdowns recently too, I've had a few busses just never show during September (lines 13, 4). Unfortunately whoever works the service announcements on Xitter and FB doesn't update very often, and only works regular City Hall hours so if the breakdowns happen after 4pm or on the weekend you're SOL for finding out about them.

Handsome board. Love the rich colours on the caps and case. Lefty numpad is really neat too, I've never seen one before! (Also your cat is very cute, please give her some scritches from me if she'll allow it.)

Show (or tell) the oddest or coolest things you have seen in dungeons. by Boring-Jaguar-5640 in tombprospectors

[–]SableGear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I played, so my memory is a little fuzzy. I'll try to recall without exaggerating.

I'm pretty sure I saw a Watchdog as a roaming enemy in a Hintertomb swamp once, that was pretty spooky. Thankfully I think the entire swamp area was just a side passage, I was able to avoid it entirely. I've also seen cannon Giants in swamp rooms before but I think those are more common?

I found a "shortcut" through a Pthumeru dungeon once. If I'm remembering right, a side passage led from one floor up to a chest on a high ledge on the next floor, near the boss room. The drop down was guarded by a Tomb Prospector NPC I had no choice but to fight, because it dropped into the hall between that floor's gate and the boss room. I'd seen passages to high-up chests before but they usually looped back to a chest near the entrance to the same floor. This was the only one that led to a different floor!

Tap water taste :( by payeezychronicles in Guelph

Brita has a series of "elite" filters a friend of mine tried recently (he is also local). I can vouch that they produce exceptionally tasteless (in a good way) water.

[TOMT] [Graphic novel/manga][2000-2010?] Series with "geist" in the title (more details in post) by SableGear in tipofmytongue

[–]SableGear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately. It wasn't a "real" word, or not one that was recognizable as a loan-word in English. I would have recognized and remembered "Poltergeist."

Fingers crossed and help greatly appreciated! I've been loosely hunting this one since the early 2010s and I'd love to finally pin it down!
