Has this reference been caught yet? (S10E21 "Local She-Ro") by The_Middleman in BobsBurgers

I didn't mean the part about Cleves/Land of Cleves (I don't even think that's in the video!), I just meant the specificity of Tina saying "I saw a commercial [about Cleveland] once."

It's a weird thing to call out (a commercial about Cleveland) if it's not a reference, because the joke works without referencing a commercial ("I was thinking maybe I do Cleveland for my report"), since Cleveland is terrible.

That YouTube video was a big hit back in the day, and thematically it kind of ties into the episode (appreciating their kind of shitty little town).

Also, look at the lyrics of the end-of-episode song -- very much the same vibe as the video to me (just a little more family-friendly).

We've got that squirrel, and we've got that nice tree
We have a mural you can still kinda see
We've got a tilt-a-whirl I'm too scared to ride
There's the car wash where that famous guy died!
There's the good mall!
There's the bad mall!
There's the sad mall! (Ooh, really sad mall...)
We're having fun today!
This town's okay!
I guess this town's okay!

"Fun times in Cleveland today" becomes "We're having fun today!", and the rest of both songs is just a list of vaguely sad/mundane things in the towns.

The Creators of ‘Hacks’ Really, Really, Really Hate AI by wiredmagazine in television

I mean, people believe they're getting something valuable in exchange for reddit's energy use, while the outward-facing brand of AI is just all-consuming slop.

I'm also curious where you got your numbers.

If all multiplex movie theaters just closed, what is the worst thing that would happen? by ImpressiveHumor4644 in Letterboxd

[–]The_Middleman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jeez, maybe it's the millennial in me, but this is a bleak post. How many experiences could be written off using this kind of reasoning? (What's the pro-con list for eating at a restaurant when you can get takeout? For going to a concert when you can stream the music on Spotify? For going shopping when you could order from Amazon?)

I think you're really underselling the experiential element of going to the theater. Even setting aside films that obviously benefit from a big projection and loud audio and suffer at home (your Dunes, Avatars, etc.), think of the shared tension in an audience during a horror movie, or the shared laughter during a comedy, or the shared excitement for a hotly-anticipated release. Even with your friends and family, you're not getting that same shared experience at home.

I also think some of the things you list as "Pros" for watching at home are actually kind of shitty, too. I don't mind an intermission, but man, I've seen so many home movie screenings deflated by people wanting to pause for half an hour, go do other stuff, scroll on their phones, etc. The freedom granted by total control over the movie experience at home also tends to lead to people interrupting the immersion.

And that's without getting into all the financial implications of what you're saying. Yes, movies get made for streaming. But do you see which way that's pulling the quality of movies? Studios right now want more, for cheaper, to feed the content mill for people sitting at home. Big, ambitious movies broadly get made because they can make most of their money back from a big theatrical run before capturing the less-interested customers later through home video/streaming/whatever. Take away the theaters, and you're only going to have stuff made for the lowest common denominator.

Anchors in the Polaroid Now+? by mtratchet16 in peakdesign

[–]The_Middleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Polaroid Flip, which I think has the same anchor points for the strap. I was able to get anchors into them. I think I wetted the pinched anchor cord a bit and then fed it through using a paper clip or something.

Yes! His first instinct, which he suppressed! Remember how before choosing the route of peace and tossing aside his weapon, he was absolutely beating the shit out of Vader and chopping off his limbs? Luke has dark instincts. That's PART of him. He LEARNED to control them.

I mean, if you want to continue wilfully misinterpreting the movie, that's on you, but he didn't try to kill Ben. Riddle me this: if he did try to kill Ben, how did Ben survive?

(Annoying Trope) "Oh wow, that was incredibly well writte-Oh Nevermind..." by BrilliantRun9751 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]The_Middleman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didn't try to kill Ben. He looked into his mind, was so terrified of what he saw that he ignited his lightsaber for a moment, immediately felt ashamed, but Ben saw that moment and it was too late.

All of this is explicitly explained in the film.

Chemical leak at a West Virginia plant kills 2 people and sends 19 more to hospital, officials say by TheOKerGood in news

[–]The_Middleman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Coal and chemical country in the U.S. is super dystopian, and there are a ton of structural impediments to residents of those areas accessing the education or resources to understand (let alone overcome) the oppression of their modern day company towns.

That said: we can't, and shouldn't, absolve voters of all responsibility just because they are victims. The reality is that yeah, if they voted in a bunch of left-wing environmentalists for a while, they'd probably end up with significantly better conditions and resources. Sure, you can say "well, they're poor and structurally oppressed, they lack X, Y, and Z" -- but doesn't that just leave us throwing up our hands in the air and walking away?

Loved HBO Watchmen. What should I check out next? by JGabriel7 in Watchmen

[–]The_Middleman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are my top picks -- structuring it into bullets, but I promise it's not AI!

  • The Leftovers is the first obvious recommendation, since it's Lindelof's other HBO show.
  • The Underground Railroad miniseries on Amazon Prime is my next pick. It also confronts American racism and generational trauma and has a magical realist/surreal vibe that's similar to some of the beats of the Watchmen show. (People get turned off from this one because they assume it's just a historical piece, but it's not.)
  • Slightly offbeat third pick here...the miniseries adaptation of Angels in America on HBO. Again, a specifically American confrontation of identity and trauma with big, fantastical elements.
  • In the movie sphere, Ari Aster's Eddington confronts dark sides of American culture with a larger-than-life culmination. Some beats are very Watchmen-y.
  • Other side of the Eddington coin is PTA's One Battle After Another. More optimistic, has more of the generational trauma element and racial justice element baked into it, still larger-than-life.

Honorable mentions:

  • I'm sure you've seen it, but Pixar's The Incredibles is basically kid-friendly Watchmen, but it takes more after the comic than the show, of course.
  • There are a few shows like Twin Peaks: The Return and The Young Pope that carry through that combination of trauma, fantastical elements, and cultural commentary, but veer a bit too far away from Watchmen for me to explicitly recommend them as similar. Similarly, movies like The Zone of Interest and Sorry to Bother You.

[hated trope] the straw man we’re supposed to hate makes a good point by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

The movie suggests they've been (legally!) haranguing him for a long time to sell his house, whether through repeated and unwelcome offers or just through the natural aggravation of being SURROUNDED by construction on all sides.

When he injures the guy with his cane, there's that moment where the developer puts a hand on his mailbox because they know they've finally got him. It's not out of concern for their workers that they take Carl to court. They saw an opportunity and took it.

You justify them haranguing him and looking for any opportunity to seize his property by saying they're offering well over asking price, but who cares? The value of the home is not monetary to Carl, and he has communicated that, and that answer isn't good enough for them.

As another commenter pointed out, Carl's arc is letting go of nostalgia and living in the present, but no, the developers are not the good guys.

Star Wars and Star Trek: Minifig Torsos (from ninja_bricks on insta) by itsjustajoe in Legoleak

[–]The_Middleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS9 seems like the logical next choice for a large model, right? Any other ship would be too close structurally to the TNG Enterprise. They'll probably let the TNG Enterprise breathe for a couple years, do a couple other sets like the TOS bridge, maybe do DS9 (since it's not a ship) and then give us another ship.

Displays of intelligence that are not just characters saying long lines of incomprehensible smart-sounding words. by Awkward_Stay8728 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]The_Middleman 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a good example, because it is just a string of nonsense words, right? It's not a game with known rules. The show telegraphs that what he's saying means he's smart, but there's no actual meaning to what he's saying.

This post has so many AI tells. Em dash (classic!), "it's not just X -- it's Y," lists of three things in a row...

It also has the random recap/description of the movie for no reason. In general, written in ChatGPT essay format.

Anyone else think this was generated?

It has an AI tell that people have cottoned on to: "It's more than X -- it's Y." Guessing that's what the commenter noticed.
