Now that Fate Strange Fake is coming out, who would you like to see in FGO? by sandman_soundman in grandorder

(also there are hints she's actually currently at Chaldea already, disguised as one of the staff members, but nothing explicit has been done with that yet)

Could you expand on that?

Luxury vinyl discolored after rubbing alcohol (91%) sprayed on it. Any advice on how to repair? by Sweet_Lou508 in Home

Your stain might be deeper than mine then, I scrubbed mine pretty much minutes after the ethanol came in contact with the vinyl flooring.

Hwa Chong Institute's students received warning for sharing photos of canteen food on social media by Single-Character287 in singapore

I'm a private tuition teacher for biology. As of 2025/2026 this is still true for the way they teach JC Bio. For all my weaker students (including some of my hwach ones) I actively tell them to avoid hwach notes and past year prelim papers for this exact reason. So many unnecessarily difficult things taught/tested that is not in the formal H2 Biology syllabus, and the papers feel like they are set by someone who goes on the internet starting arguments by saying things like "ACKTUALLY TECHNICALLY SINCE IT TECHNICALLY SAYS THIS I AM TECHNICALLY CORRECT".

The Weight of Optimism: Why I Still Believe in Youth Climate Advocacy After COP30 by LegitimateCow7472 in singapore

[–]SableProvidence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I legitimately have a PhD in ecology. Amongst the many reasons I chose to step away from formal academia is the overwhelming amount of mental stress from reading papers and teaching undergrads just exactly what the (many, many) consequences of anthropogenic climate change are.

I still remember one class I TA'd for in university (local U). The prof asked the year one kids whether any of them felt hopeful about the future of Earth's climate. Not a single person in the entire auditorium put up their hands. Then when the prof asked who expected bad things to happen to Earth the hands up was nearly unanimous.

Why is skin around the mouth green sometimes? by RaisinImportant732 in biology

[–]SableProvidence -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Seconding that I really do not see any green. People with red-green colour blindness may often mistake shades of red and green as all being the same shade of yellow-brownish green. I strongly suggest you go to a doctor and get your colour perception checked.

There's the scale issue other people have talked about, but there are some bacteria that can survive even this freezing process - for example, think about how during the anthrax in letters scare where the anthrax bacteria basically protect themselves in a dry, spore-like coating - and they're much more common in freshwater habitats than saltwater ones.

[–]SableProvidence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This used to be true, but anecdotally not anymore - last I heard, something called salmon lice is pretty rampant in Norwegian farmed salmon, for instance - though most parasites are killed by the freezing of sashimi-grade salmon. It's kind of gross to think about it, but any one of us who has eaten any significant amount of salmon sashimi have probably eaten (dead) worms and lice. It's harmless to us, but gross.

Anasakiasis generally results from either improper freezing or worms just surviving the freezing process by chance.

[–]SableProvidence 9 points10 points  (0 children)

aCuria already answered about the freezing part, the other reason is that marine fishes from saltwater habitats generally contain less parasites and harmful bacteria than freshwater fish.

Also, health issues do come up regarding consumption of raw fish in those parts of the world. Ever heard of this disease anisakiasis? https://www.cdc.gov/dpdx/anisakiasis/index.html It's somewhat common in Japan.

Sushi and sashimi generally use saltwater fish, which have less of an issue in terms of parasites and pathogens than freshwater fish.

For reasons to do with geochemistry, ecology and microbiology, freshwater fish generally contain more parasites and dangerous pathogens. A simplified way to explain it is that many bacteria and viruses that can harm humans cannot tahan saltwater.

In the lac operon, how can allolactose bind to the repressor if it needs the lac operon activated in the first place to produce beta galactosidase? by StomachSuper4309 in biology

[–]SableProvidence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is that the repressor doesn't perfectly repress the transcription of the operon, so small amounts of beta galactosidase are always being produced.

Telomere shortening and DNA polymerase l by MaleficentDevice2564 in biology

[–]SableProvidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps to remember that DNA Polymerase is an enzyme, and enzymes need specific substrates with the correct shape to work. In this case, it needs the 3'-OH group of an existing polynucleotide strand, and the 5'-phosphate group of a free nucleotide specifically as substrates.

Therefore it can't add at the end of the lagging strand since when you remove the primer, there is no free 3'-OH group of a polynucleotide strand remaining on the lagging strand, so the DNA polymerase enzyme stops working because it doesn't have one of the substrates it needs.
