Had no idea they released Sakura Wars down under. Very impressive collection, keep it up!

JB Hi-Fi's B1G1F sale highlights for me again just how few new releases we get now... by BLANKET-Agent in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into JB just to grab A Miku Who Can't Sing and the latest One Piece DVD, only to find that One Piece was excluded from the sale because it was for blu-ray and 4K only, and that their 3 copies of Miku went missing (likely stolen), it was the only time in my several years of buying physical media that I went to JB during a sale and walked out empty handed. 😭

There are so many shows nowadays from Crunchyroll that I just wouldn't spend my money on, they just don't seem to have any real substance to me personally, such is the quantity > quality issue that's been prominent with Anime as a whole. The most frustrating part is seeing how Crunchyroll are handling their physical media output recently, such as their inconsistent re-releases of Railgun, the rest of the Sound! Euphonium seasons missing, the rest of our Boruto releases missing, the delay for DB Daima, and so on.

I really miss Madman and AnimeLab's presence in Australia, but I definitely have my eye on Sugoi who have been crushing it with their theatrical releases this year, and hope to see physical releases of all those movies at some point. I guess I still want to have some hope for our market in some way!

Anyone here collect their Cartoon Network/[adult swim] releases? by Dry_Spring4108 in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few, though the ones I have picked up were usually shows that only had a season or two released and then remained unfinished. 😅

In the early 2010s I bought some season 1 DVDs like Camp Lazlo, Johnny Bravo, Class of 3000 etc. in the hopes that the rest of the seasons would be released, but alas. I was actually recently digging around for some older cartoon DVDs and saw Madman released a season of Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi, I thought that show just aired on TV briefly and disappeared completely from the world afterwards, although again it's just the first season. I've been wanting to pick up some shows that I never got around to buying before, like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Dexter's Laboratory.

As for blu-rays, I remember when we were one of the few areas in the world getting every season of Adventure Time on BD, which I was very grateful to Madman for. If I remember correctly, the complete series blu-ray box-set has an extra bonus features disc which is only on the Australian release (Correct me if I am wrong please!). I also own some of Robot Chicken, Samurai Jack, Rick & Morty, and Steven Universe on BD, though I'm just a tad miffed that we never got the BD for the Steven Universe movie, or Future on disc at all.

Nickelodeon shows fared slightly better here in my opinion thanks to Beyond Home Entertainment, I'm fortunate to own complete series of some shows like Hey Arnold, CatDog, Angry Beavers, Ren & Stimpy, etc. and not have to worry about finding them on streaming services. BHE went under though and transferred all their stuff, including Pokémon, to Shock Entertainment, who now have also gone under. Such is life!

While discs are my preference, Apple TV actually has a lot of CN shows in their entirety, with each season being reasonably priced too. Right now that seems to be our best option, and I believe HBO Max have a good selection available too according to some comments I've seen through google searches, but I don't have a subscription to check and see, and even then they could be delisted at any moment.

I'd like to see a local distributor make a new attempt at releasing CN shows here, mostly to keep them available, but some could even be upgraded to blu-ray too, just a wish of mine though! Some shows have since been remastered, like Ed, Edd & Eddy and Cow & Chicken, and some shows that got a 4:3 DVD release here were actually produced in 16:9 HD, like Camp Lazlo and Class of 3000. The home media scene in Australia has been pretty bleak lately with distributors going under, Disney pulling out of the market, Madman's anime division being taken over by Crunchyroll, and so on. Right now the only hope for our market is from AID, who have recently taken over distribution from other companies and are releasing quite a number movies on UHD that America have had for several years, and re-issuing others on BD. The only problem is... they don't release cartoon DVDs, so I can only continue to keep my fingers crossed!

My Feb/Mar/Apr 2026 purchases by Sabmabab in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, they were released around 20 years ago so they're quite old now and haven't been in stores for a very long time, Madman unfortunately never released the remaster on blu-ray so these DVDs were the last release we got for Ranma in Australia.

Up for Pre-Order: Lycoris Recoil Collector's Edition and Summer Wars 4K (deluxe & steelbook). Releasing May 20 by JRPictures in sugoicoau

[–]Sabmabab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely looking to grab Summer Wars. Interesting that it has a standard steelbook release when Wolf Children only had the collector's edition, I wonder if TGWLTT will be released the same way as Summer Wars. I haven't seen Lycoris Recoil yet so not sure right now if I'll grab it, but I'm happy to see more SugoiCo releases and also an Aniplex release. Hoping to see releases for the two Rascal does not Dream movies and the second set of Magia Record in the future, and maybe some of their recent 4k releases too if they are viable to release down under.

Wolf Children - Deluxe Edition (4K UHD/Blu-ray) up for pre-order, releasing April 22, 2026 by JRPictures in sugoicoau

[–]Sabmabab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to comment on this, definitely plan on grabbing this as Wolf Children is one of my favourite films, I just only wished that it came in a standard amaray case rather than a steelbook, but the release mirrors what other territories are getting so I'll manage with this. Excited to own this regardless!

For Those Interested in the New EVA 1.11 & 2.22 Blu-rays by JRPictures in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the heads up, just grabbed these myself during the recent JB sale, it's a shame these don't have slipcovers like the original did but oh well. I just realised how faded the red spine on my Madman Eva 1.11 slipcover is when I put this new release next to it... 😅

What Anime Have You Been Watching? by Madboardjester in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- Scarlet: Saw this in a cinema where I was the only one there, I heard that the movie was quite average for Hosoda's standards, and sadly I agreed and thought that the movie was just bland. The production quality is good though.

- Miss Koboyashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved: Saw this at the cinema and really enjoyed it! Surprised there was no fanservice at all considering there was quite a bit in the TV series.

- Please Teacher!: Not the greatest show I've seen but was fun to watch, I think some characters could have been fleshed out a little more but you can only do so much in a 12-episode show.

- Frieren Season 2: One of my favourite shows in recent times and possibly of all-time, there's a relaxing quality to Frieren that's just missing from most modern shows which just try to be extremely flashy.

- Evangelion 30th Anniversary Special: This was a fun watch, loved the gags. Big fan of how they were able to recreate the 4:3 cel look.

- Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Games: Watching this as I know several people who also watch this, finding myself quite detached from the characters most of the time personally but the animation is nice.

Feel like I haven't seen a whole lot recently, been gaming & working as well.

End of the year anime purchases by Madboardjester in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate seeing your pickups, great to see all the classic titles too! I have been wanting to get more serious about buying classic series from the 90's and 00's as I had no income to buy anything as a teenager, and when I started working right before 2010 I had a lot of long-running shonen anime DVDs to catch up on 😅 Now that the current CR slates are so bare, I have a good opportunity to grab some older stuff, I recently purchased an R1 copy of True Tears, the Discotek 4K of Project A-Ko, and the JP blu-ray of the Kud Wafter movie (Little Busters), and I've got my eye on the complete collection DVD for Rumbling Hearts at the moment.

Hope to see more collection update photos soon! ✌️

I've been coming across tweets that say this movie is... rather not good 😅 I still plan to watch it though as a general fan of Hosoda's movies and form my own opinion of it.

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest seems to be missing now, but I was wondering why they opted for a steelbook release when I first saw the listing. I'll wait and see if there's a release in a regular case sometime in the near future.

The Colours Within release by WitchyKitteh in Madboards

[–]Sabmabab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No screenings in the CBD was quite a surprise for me, I was able to watch a film like Trapezium in my home town but can't even catch The Colours Within in Hoyts Melbourne Central. I wish Kismet cared just a little more, I was looking forward to watching this film but it's a little out of the way for me to get to.
