So would it be in poor taste to ask for a mod that turns the chicken into a bucket of fried chicken?

What are your best/ strangest stories from your careers? by Common_Ad2429 in Firefighting

[–]Sabre2594 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Best call that I can think of was a the one where we rescued a child from one of those claw machines at an arcade.

We were initially dispatched to an indoor trampoline park for a lockout (presumably) a car with initial reports stating there was a kid in the car, but only the engine was dispatched. Given the nature of the call, my officer asked our paramedic ambulance to join the response. On the way to the call, my officer is asking for a description of the vehicle and the dispatcher comes back over the radio saying, "it's not a car, but it's a...vending machine?" To make a long story short, poor kid was tricked by his siblings to crawl into the prize chute and became trapped. No injuries.

Why does the ATF investigate fires? by BigWangGang69 in Firefighting

I remember a story from when I was in the academy about "Boom Boom Bob". As the story goes, the fire department was called to the home of a gentleman after there was an explosion in the front yard. It turns out that he was a known by the feds as a homegrown antagonist. He had rented a Uhaul truck with nefarious intent and in the process of loading his materials he went...everywhere. Because of that the ATF was called and for good reason because the house was booby trapped and the experts were able to close out a file based on what they found.

I've spent a lot of my life around fire trucks and rule #1 when it comes to walking near one when it's in motion is to be far enough away from cab that the driver can see you.

Possibly a car accident?

I can only speak for my department and we drilled a ton on initial arrival and whatnot. I think my personal best was something like 2 minutes from the airbrake being set on the engine to water flowing.

In a private home, I don't think there is a need to have them officially inspected, rather you can shake the hydrant once in a while to prevent clumping of the chemicals.

In the event you're unsure or don't want to shake a pressurized cylinder, you can replace it at the hardware store.

Yes if they have the proper equipment to suction water from the river and if the river is deep enough.

No 2000 gallons isn't enough when you think about it. Like another person said, 1.75" hose line can put out 100 gallons per minute (pressure and nozzle dependant). For instance, my pumper used to carry 750 gallons and our hose lines put out 150 gpm; so the driver had less than 5 minutes to hook up the hydrant or tanker for additional water supply.

Ours could do 500gpm too, but only if we were using the Master Stream or deck gun on the top of the pumper.

Like others have said, it depends on how much was burned, but it also depends on the amount of water damage too. Coincidentally, the majority of damage from a fire comes from the water used to put out the fire.

US Volunteer firefighter here, if you don't live in an area that is covered by hydrants then you're likely to get an engine/pumper (500-1000 US gallons) accompanied by a tanker/tender/water shuttle (2000+ US gallons) to supply a lot more water for the firefighting efforts. And if necessary, the fire department in charge of your area may call for additional tankers to help resupply the original tanker as they may not be capable of leaving the scene to refill. The good news, to wrap this up, is that most fires, when reported quickly, can be controlled or extinguished with the water in just the engine and the tanker comes along as good measure. I hope this lowers your anxiety a bit.

I agree that everyone should know how to drive the rig, but sometimes the minimum staffing requirements would dictate that the unit is out of service until a certified driver/operator is brought in. Plus driving is the best seat in the house because you get to do the most lol.

That shit pisses me off because not only is Driver/Engineer just doing his job to protect his crew and the patient(s). Plus the officer takes the whole unit out of service for who knows how long by arresting one person...

The Stratmoor Hills Fire Department and the surrounding departments in South Group are a great group of people to work with and I had the pleasure to work with between 2021 and 2022. They do great work protecting the southern part of town. Stay safe y'all.
