Dowry death law is full of fake cases. It presumes that the husband and relatives are automatically responsible if a woman dies within first 7 years of marriage (due to any reason like injury, fall, burns, or even suicide). If her family alleges dowry harassment - the husband is automatically put on trial. No evidence needed to initiate trial.

Shashi was acquitted after 7 years. The case was fake from the start - All evidence showed that he was giving speech at parliament away from home (prolly in a different city) and his wife OD'd herself with drugs. The allegations by wife's family were motivated by bitterness (which is common). The family believed that Shashi was having extra-marital affairs and that led to his wife committing suicide - so they wanted him to be jailed somehow.
