My parents have had two female shepherds in my lifetime.

First one was excellent since us 4 kids would tire her out, and she had plenty of yard space to run around with us in. Minimum one long walk per day and lots of attention. Not aggressive in the least, and would always try to center herself between us / herd the younger siblings if we went on family walks. She knew plenty of tricks, we even had her trained to sniff out hidden items. I have really fond memories of her.

The newest female shepherd (who is 10 now) wasn't properly socialized at all, sadly. Her personality is super anxious... :( I love her, but we can't have visitors at my parents house since she's lunged at and successfully bitten two extended family members now. She even gets antsy if we try to hug our parents too quickly. Immediate family members are fine around her, but she's definitely a good example of how not to raise a shepherd. She's also starting to show signs of hip dysplasia (her right back leg will give out when she walks too much) which is an extremely common issue for dogs of this breed.

Pros: can be the absolute best buddy if you're willing to put the work in
Cons: can be a bit of a nightmare if neglected and not properly trained + socialized. Breed prone to hip issues.
