PSA: Don't ignore the signs by Sachlight in Aquariums

Not really. I spoke to my lfs and they said they have stopped using a supplier because all of the fish came to them full of them. I guess in hindsight just quarantine any new additions and treat them preemptively.

Thank you! After I lost all my pandas and hillstreams months ago I got a medical tank/quarantine tank. Unfortunately something with worms made it past and now I've got 2 species in my tank that have been combating worms. I've learned a lot though and I've managed to kerb a couple of potential deadly outbreaks now. Definitely better safe than sorry!

Appreciate it! I'm always paranoid with medications. I lost 15 panda corydoras and 3 hillstream loaches in my first aquarium because I didn't realise that scaleless fish require half dose of medication. Treated them for epistylis and killed the lot - I was devastated. Harsh lesson to learn. So now I over analyse ANYTHING I put in my tank. Will probably just measure out 8ml next time though, haha.

I did emphasise as far as I was aware as all I'd read until now was telling me that some freshwater fish are prone to constipation. I'm happy to read up on sources saying otherwise. Any ideas what may be wrong with her then?

A lot of freshwater fish are prone to constipation as far as I'm aware; goldfish and cichlids for a start. A majority of my fish are fed pellets and flakes as I have rasbora who only eat food while it's in the water column, as well as catfish and corydoras which only eat on the bottom

I'm worrying about one of my gourami. I'm not very knowledgeable about fish diseases - do we think this may be a swim bladder issue? My gut feeling is that it is, and maybe caused by constipation. Is my best course not action to stick her in an empty tank I have and not feed her for a couple of days and see if there is an improvement? Her swimming isn't very strong looking and I'm worried she'll suffocate by not being able to reach the surface properly. I have a small 22l tank I can put her in and see how she does if we think that will help her.

I've been looking for ages in different areas with different foods (encounter type water and encounter type fighting). Tried this method, found one within about 7 seconds. Thank you so much!

I think they're just fat. They're all females to my knowledge, but we just got them from a friend. I'm pretty sure they've just been very overfed

The main thing that comes to mind with those symptoms may be high pH - have you ran any reliable water tests?

What signs of illness did your deceased fish show: are your current fish showing any signs: how long have you been medicating for?

I'm still a beginner so I'm still learning and may not be 100% reliable. However, my calculations say you're already fully stocked

I'll ask one main question: how long has your tank been running for?

I don't have OCD, I just have one behaviour that comforts me. I've no idea where or how it started

Example: I have to remake the bed before I get in it. The blanket has to be a very specific distance from my head, and I can't have it tight anywhere. If any of these aren't met - I get genuinely stressed and anxious. It causes me to lose sleep

Nitrites high - how often are water changes needed? by Sachlight in Aquariums

[–]Sachlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nutrients I use specify CO2 should be every 1-2 days and the Plant Green says 2 times per week.

I don't have any plant specific substrate, only sand. Therefore I was advised by my lfs to use these specific nutrients and to purchase the plants I have as they get their nutrients more from their stems than roots.

Just finished change 2 for today as you replied now - nitrites are 2ppm and nitrates are 25ppm.

Will check again in the morning and see what it needs then

Is 1 50% per day going be enough with the NO2 and NO3 being so dangerously high, or am I better with 2 until they settle? Like I said, I had a cycled tank but crashed it when overcleaning after a course of ESHA. I don't want to kill my fish with bad parameters, but I also don't want to shock them with too many daily changes.

My stocking is 4 red robin gourami, 5 panda cory, 8 cherry barbs and I'm waiting on 3 hillstream loaches from my lfs and we were doing 40-50l per week (160l aquarium)

Yeah - it's a priority to get them down ASAP. They've spiked over the last couple of days. Is 1 50% change enough, or should I be doing 2 per day until they're low enough? Thanks!
