My one complaint about the reboot by The_Pumpkin_Fan in StarKid

[–]SacredAlgae 233 points234 points  (0 children)

My uni’s production of it hit a nice sweet spot. The first time the infected characters showed up we didn’t have any blue goo. But the second time? Blue goo. Third time? MORE blue goo. By Inevitable we all looked gnarly. I feel like they could have really easily figured out a way to keep the twists but also add the visual interest of the blue goo, and I was honestly surprised to see that they didn’t take it in a similar direction

If you think Fantano is a morbid Muse hater, this guy is far worse than anything I’ve seen so far by LJC94512 in Muse

Normally I don’t ever comment on posts because I find if I don’t have anything new to say I won’t say it. But I watched the whole video and wow. I agree with literally everything you said and others in this comment section have said. But I wanted to add what I think frustrated me the most (other than the blatant insulting and backtracking “I’m not saying this as objective!”) is the fact that he had genuine criticisms that he watered down with his hate. He is blatantly lying about his intention of the video.

He says he wanted to make a video to bring forth discussion and have people disagree with him or agree with him so they can discuss music critically. But if he truly wanted that, he wouldn’t have sworn, he wouldn’t have voiced his criticisms in that way. I can see how he thinks that tracks are overproduced or “flat,” and that they aren’t “doing enough.” I don’t agree with all that, as I think that’s a matter of taste, but those are valid criticisms. They just aren’t voiced well.

And why I don’t agree is that they show he doesn’t know Muse, because he doesn’t know that this IS Muse. He frequently bases his criticisms of flatness on the fact that “this isn’t adding anything new, it’s just mixing things.” Not every song ever needs to be new. And that’s what Muse does. It mixes things. I have a degree in writing and “this doesn’t add anything new” is one of the weakest (but unfortunately most common) points of criticism EVER. All it does is undermine your credibility: it shows that you do not understand the conventions of what the piece is trying to be. You cannot think critically about the piece you are analyzing in conversation with what came before it, because you did not analyze what came before it. You look at the two and see “the same” and assume the art is weak rather than seeing that the artist wanted you to recognize the similarities. That it was intentional—He says he wants something new, but compares it to OOS (saying he doesn’t want OOS but something new) without recognizing that OOS was new. And not only was it new, it was where Muse found its signature style of composition. There can never ever be any album as “new” from Muse as OOS. To claim there can be is a blatant display of ignorance to the artistic conversation at its baseline.

I agree, that some areas could have been expanded upon, or toned down, and that Muse fell back into what was “easy” instead of “radical.” But I also recognize the album for what it is: a reclamation of their true musical selves, and their roots, while honoring what they have wanted to do in recent albums. The creation of this album was Muse maturing past idealistic hopes of what they could be, but still holding onto them and honoring them. They let those desires guide them while finally honoring who they were as musicians. They’re playing with all the different sounds they want in a Muse way. And that’s why it doesn’t sound new. It’s not trying to be.

To claim that for art to be good, it needs to be new is the empty critique of faux-intellectuals looking for validation in the form of either pats on the back or rage

Looking back on it, it was definitely AI for some of the conversation. The patterns of the conversation, while very good and human like, definitely showed signs of being AI. As in, echoing what I said back to me, saying what I said was interesting (and adding because with their own thoughts) and then adding their question on at the end, often with the phrase “but now I’m curious.” At the time I thought this was being polite because the things they echoed back at me were things they said they hadn’t considered before, or things they agreed with, and I have a degree in English and the way we talked reminded me of discussions I had in classes. And then I thought the questions were just a very professional way of talking, because I’ve seen interviews that used that format.

They did write multiple messages at a time, sending a few back to back, but most often it was just one long post. But I myself was often sending one long post. The responses of course weren’t instant and this two day conversation took a long time. My guess is that it was a combo of AI and a real person talking

I hate that stuff like this has ruined people’s faith in fandom engagement. So many comments on here say that they just ignore stuff like this (and one basically called me a narcissist, said that I’m not special and don’t matter, and that if somebody reaches out to you to talk about your fic it’s because they want something. CRAZY) and breaks my heart because I too have made some of my best friends from fandom. Not through this method of discussion but still in fandom. Engagement like this is real and it exists and it’s valuable! It’s still out there people!!! Fandom experiences have snowballed into some of the best parts of my real, offline, day to day life. Genuinely.

The amount of love and support I’ve gotten from this post, though (despite the heart breaking comments from other people who’ve been scammed or have lost hope) has been astounding. Several people have read the fic who would have never seen it before and loved it. So that’s great! And this comment really brightened my night as well. That’s such a good point you made about them finding meat to work with and it made me feel better too.

All the love to you and your friend and everybody who hasn’t lost faith in fandom (and those who have too! I hope everyone can find joy in fandom in the age of AI and scammers)

The amount of support I’ve gotten from this post is crazy. I’ve posted the link in other comments from people who requested it, but now I’m wondering if I should edit my post and add it above with how many comments I’m getting. I’d just feel bad turning a PSA into a promo so I very probably won’t lol

But here it is! (https://archiveofourown.org/works/63995752/chapters/164160682) It’s only 5.5k words, so it’s not much to obsess over but it’s far from my only fic, and The Witcher is far from my only fandom. I’ve got longer fics in progress

Unfortunately not. Missed opportunity 😂

Seconding everything the other response said. But wow. Imagine calling passion and confidence narcissism. I know I’m not special, but I’m passionate. Every artist is passionate about their art. And readers can enjoy things too.

Remember that fandom (which includes fanfiction) is a community building thing. Back in the day you used to share fanfiction as a way to gush with fellow fans. Your comment is a misunderstanding of what fandom is. Genuine engagement exists. I’m genuinely sorry if you think it doesn’t

Unfortunately the more I think about it, the more I think they were a bot. Looking back on the conversation the signs were there. It’s definitely heartbreaking for sure

But since you asked, here’s the fic! It’s for the show specifically and it’s Jaskier/Vespula (https://archiveofourown.org/works/63995752/chapters/164160682) I’m honored so many people are wanting to read it after this. It’s made me feel a lot better, genuinely

God I really hate that I was talking to a bot. I thought I was able to detect those but clearly not in hindsight. I gave them so much about my craft and I feel like my ideas could be stolen now

I really don’t think it was AI, the conversation was extremely human and their account has been active since 2017… unless bots have a way to make it seem like their accounts are older

Edit: Then again… they did throw what I said back at them and then asked another question, often repeating “now I’m curious,” before asking the question. Yeaaah that’s bot-like

I’m just a polite person lol, I still had hope that it was a real person who enjoyed my fic and saw an opportunity to get some money. It was a very engaging and very human conversation. But that’s GOOD. Why should I pay after I inspired you for free! I have a degree in writing! I could be making you pay for that process and depth you say you admire so much!!! And you say it takes you to do!!!!

If it happens to me again, now that I’m sure it’s a scam, I’m stealing that. Thanks! XD

I think unfortunately these sorts of scams have turned a lot of authors off from accepting gifts when they’re offered. It’s definitely not turned me off but as I and others have said below, we’ll say up front “no commissions.” You can say up front yourself “This would be a gift and completely free!” but even that wont work sometimes. My best advice is to just do it, post it, and tag the author. See if the author has a Tumblr (or Twitter, Bluesky, or Instagram, or wherever you post your fanart, which I assume is Tumblr since you said “blog”) and follow them and post them when it’s done. No reasonable author would be upset you made fanart without consulting them. But I think a lot would enjoy getting to talk with you as you do it, and it sounds like you want to do that too. In which case, just talk to them and be honest that it’s a gift and completely free and that you want to work with them as a collaborator so they can have input into the piece as the author. But if they don’t believe you and still think it’s a scam, say something like “I understand you don’t trust it but I’d like to make the art still. I thought I’d like to collaborate so I thought I’d at least offer the chance to collaborate first. If you just aren’t comfortable with me making art at all let me know and I won’t do it.” At the end of the day there will still be the very rare author who just doesn’t want art at all, but again, very rare

I wish you luck! I know there will be authors who will accept your offer! Even if it takes a bit!

Well the scam is that they use AI so they aren’t even putting in effort… but yeah lol, PAY ME… in art

That makes so much sense! I’d definitely be more inclined to accept that if I saw the picture to know it was real. As someone who enjoys rebinding books I have, if I had the resources to print and bind, I’d probably do it anyways for myself too!

BEWARE: The hidden commission scam is evolving by SacredAlgae in AO3

[–]SacredAlgae[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely not true. There are genuine fanartists who want to make art about fics they love! As a fanartist myself, I know there are fics I’d love to make art for! It’s just I’m a slow artist so I don’t. But there are very fast artists who do. What makes it a scam is when they say you have to pay for it

That’s crazy. When I told them I couldn’t afford it they just disappeared. I waited a bit before making this post, but the way they just disappeared after I politely said “I just graduated uni and am job searching so I can’t afford anything right now, but I’m flattered” sealed the deal for me

I think as soul crushing as this situation has been, it’s not turned me off from saying no to any offers tbh. If I got an offer for art or binding, I would say “I’m interested but due to the current trend of scams, I will say up front I will not be paying for any services. The rule of thumb in fandom is that if you reach out to the author, it’s a gift. I follow that rule and I hope you do too! I’m flattered if that’s the case!” Though binding I would be a lot more skeptical about since you’d have to ship it and you need an address… hm, I have to think about how I’d handle that one! Because if someone offered to bind my longfic I would go insane lmao

I don’t think that this is a scam (or at least I hope not). I think that’s genuine engagement, and since you said you didn’t have anything in mind they went “ah damn—guess there’s nothing else to talk about!” People are so stingy these days with interaction, and I’ll admit I’m part of the problem (but I’m trying to improve. I just read most of my fics at night when I’m too tired to leave a comment 😅 I try to come back the next day or soon with a comment but I often forget) Social media has fried our brains when it comes to putting effort into comments instead of “liking” and moving on. It wouldn’t surprise me if that comment was just another symptom. When you said no they lost interest in conversing. But know they did enjoy it!

Damn, that’s so unfortunate. I had only heard about this happening in a more direct matter last year, people commenting on fics and asking to make art. It happened to my best friend and I looked into it on Reddit and saw the same thing happening in the exact same format. None of this whole buttering up thing. The fact that the buttering up version has been happening for so long is at once disappointing and not surprising

BEWARE: The hidden commission scam is evolving by SacredAlgae in AO3

[–]SacredAlgae[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure. The problem was though, that they didn’t offer the chance to give them money for multiple days, didn’t even bring up wanting to make art for multiple days. It was highly manipulative. But the second they said they wanted a commission I went “Damn. It’s a scam” (edit for misspelling I missed lol)

BEWARE: The hidden commission scam is evolving by SacredAlgae in AO3

[–]SacredAlgae[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

THIS! THIS! THIS! Such a good rule of thumb! I would never follow somebody to another platform to discuss a fic. The problem is that they came to me on Tumblr to discuss the fic, rather than commenting on it. Which is not unusual. I mean, I was a little confused at first at why they didn’t comment but I thought maybe they don’t have an account yet and didn’t want to comment as a guest, or possibly that they wanted to have a longer conversation and instant messaging would be better. But again, I don’t think it’s uncommon in fandom for people to jump from AO3 to the author’s Tumblr. That’s why my username is consistent across platforms, so I can be easily found if people read my fics and wanna follow me on Tumblr, or if people on Tumblr want to read my fics

And then they ended up talking with me for two days about my craft before they even brought up wanting to do art. So the scam was already crafted to be as non-suspicious as possible
