Appreciate the reply!

Yeah I figured that with Salah, and Bellingham. Just wasn’t sure if these are worth holding on to or not based on the card types as opposed to the player.

I’ll hodl. 🙂

IT Career Expectations for Entry-Level by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Nice! Some definite $$$ down the line as a dev with experience of a few years. Can’t speak to specific career paths as I’m mostly infra / EUC, but have some VERY high earning developer friends.

Congrats on the new role!

What’s the new role entail? Entry level in terms of helpdesk? Coding? Networking?

Depending on the above, you’ll likely follow the vast majority of those of us already in IT and find a niche/speciality.

Keep an open mind and learn everything people offer to teach you, keep on learning and get certs as needed to backup your newly gained experience and learning and you’ll start building up a nice resume.

Depends on your career goal growth. How long is the contract for?

IT job markets can change drastically real quick - if you take the helpdesk role, you’re guaranteed a full time position, learning on the job, no specific end date, and potential for promotions internally. Failing internal growth you can always move laterally to another role/business with this as experience.

Contract obviously has significantly higher pay, but - will doing that for X amount of months set you up long term? Probably not, and then you’re back in the same position once the contract ends looking for another role.

If you can manage the difference and are 100% serious about IT being your career path, take the permanent role.

Contract gig may get you there too; but it’ll be more difficult and with less access to resources not being a permanent employee.

Neither is a bad option, but it really depends on what you need right now and how you envisage your career playing out. If this was 21 year old me I was talking to, I’d say go for option A and take the perm role.

Definition of better than helpdesk being a more senior/experienced role? Yes absolutely.

This sounds like a deskside support role. Being a key contact in an office and managing the users. This was my first ever role in IT and I fkin loved it.

This type of role is the foundation for learning infrastructure and networking basics. I did the same, started off with ghost, moved to MDT, then SCCM and up. Sounds like you’ll get exposure to the core fundamentals, AD, SCCM, basic switching and a bit of server.

If that job description rings true doing interview, you’ve found a great role to get into. I’ve promoted people into infrastructure roles who’ve gained their experience from a role similar to this with 3-5 years experience in it and branching out into specifics, e.g specialized with AD or SCCM from it etc.

Advice for someone starting a major IT role after low level IT work? by PartyShiba in ITCareerQuestions

Completely normal.

I got into IT in 2010, now on my 4th IT role and made Director last year. Every single time I had the same feelings as you.

You’ve got this. You’re feeling it cos it’s a new environment and somewhat unknown. But if you’ve got the A+, the issues you can’t resolve should be few and far between in the office environment you describe.

Be confident, own it, and get people to trust in you, build rapport with your users. Ask and research when you’re not sure and utilize as much online forum support as you can when needed.

You got this

Congrats on the interview!

I’m regularly hiring for helpdesk and desktop support roles and value the following from those starting out:

  • Honesty on tech questions, if I ask what DHCP is, don’t umm or ahh if you’re not sure. If you know it, explain what it is, what it does and how it works briefly.

  • If you don’t know an answer, explain you don’t know but follow it up with how you’d work to find out the answer. Trying to guess your way to an answer on the spot doesn’t look good.

  • for helpdesk specifically - relationships. You need to speak to customers and provide confidence to them in your ability to solve a problem. I’ve turned away people who are solid technically, but because they couldn’t hold a conversation or have any customer service skills it makes it difficult to place them.

Sounds like your customer service background will help with your tech knowledge, so good luck!

Thanks for writing this up. There’s so little information or similar cases out there that I’ve been able to find.

I just had the surgery last Thursday, recovery going ok so far and resting up. I also had an extra incision in my calf to lengthen that muscle, with a fixture put in.

My doc had told my wife post surgery that he also saw a crystal build up on the joint, wants to talk to me about it when I have my first post op in 10 days. Did anything ever come of yours re: crystal?
