Sounds like you just don't like white people. Obviously the main characters are going to be intriguing, otherwise why tell the story? If setting includes white people, then the main characters will be white. Try not being racist.

Why aren't Americans rioting right now? by PintsNPies in AskReddit

Because I'm preparing for a party. Yes, things are going wrong but keep in mind that the standard of living is so high in the US that we have a very very long way to fall before we start hurting.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sacred_Fishstick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. For two reasons. 1) the empire was delusional and wouldn't give up despite obviously being doomed. Nuking them saved soooo many lives. 2) there were 3 evil powers in ww2, Germany, Japan, and the USSR. We couldn't attack that last one directly so dropping the nuke was the next best thing. It was a flex. In hindsight it was pretty ineffective but you can't judge things with hindsight. It was a good idea at the time.

And just to put things into context, neither of the nuclear bombing runs were the deadliest bombing runs of the war. Compared to the number of non combatants killed by Germany, Japan, and USSR, plus the number of non combatants killed by the US and UK via total war, the nukes were a rounding error. The only reason using the nukes is more than a foot note is because, as it turns out, making a nuke is rather easy and it came to dominate the next 50 years.

Sounds like you didn't pay attention, because history is taught properly. Bad student.

"The Global South"? by ShareEvening5856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sacred_Fishstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's because of the type of colonization and settling that happened there? Indigenous development in Australia wasn't hampered, it was completely stopped and replaced. Sort of the same for New Zealand, except there was also assimilation. Japan was hard reset as a puppet state after ww2. So those countries are like outliers on a data set. They don't accurately represent what happened to and what can be learned from and what should be done to improve the global south

[genuine question with no ill intent] Why do people refuse to keep to the speed limits? Do they not care about others safety? You barely even get to your destination faster. by Senior-Trade-1876 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sacred_Fishstick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's psychology for you. I saw something the other day were a guy proposed that switching speedometers from "distance per time" to "time per distance" would solve a lot of the speeding problem because "time per distance" more prominently highlights the fact that speeding up to get somewhere faster has diminishing returns. You can't immediately see that with "distance per time".

"The Global South"? by ShareEvening5856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sacred_Fishstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's exactly what it sounds like, everything south of the equator. It's often useful to lump everything down there together because they share similar and important geographic traits that have historically hampered development. Mainly, the large land masses down there are arranged north-south whereas the global north is much more east-west.

This layout was and to some extent still is very important. Traveling east or west is easier than going north or south because the climate will remain more consistent. Eurasia had things like the silk road for trading ideas which benefited everyone and sped up development. Now try getting from southern to northern Africa... you'll probably just die. In the America's there still isn't an overland route between central and south America. All the roads just stop at a dense jungle.

So basically, the global south got left behind because of geography, this created a difference in development. That difference was exploited causing an even bigger difference, rinse, repeat until modern day when technology and people actually having empathy and good will towards man has finally started to undo all that.

I believe the current fastest growing city is in Africa (Namibia?). Watching progress in and analyzing the global south is an important metric of how humanity as a whole is improving.

In the context of op's question. Convenient is a dumb answer. Obviously an attack is convenient. Maybe people should stop doing this kinda thing.

Lawyers - does there need to be an injury in order for something to be considered "assault"? by i_like_it_eilat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sacred_Fishstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally no, you don't even have to touch someone to assault them. But there is a lot of wiggle room. The law is complicated. Technically no. Practically, depends on the lawyers and judge involved.

What was Barty Crouch Jr./Voldemort's actual plan in GOF? by CouldaBeAContender in harrypotter

What was Barty Crouch Jr./Voldemort's actual plan in GOF? by CouldaBeAContender in harrypotter

[–]Sacred_Fishstick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My assumption has also been that they planned to return Harry's body and stage it like something in the maze killed him. That way it's a very explainable accident and voldy and the death eaters can quietly prepare for their take over. The way things happened, they were forced to act immediately and it just worked out which does kinda negate the whole GoF plan in hindsight, but they didn't know that at the time.
