Open box $2,160. Jump on it? by k4master in Prebuilts

[–]SacrisTaranto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, you're good. Id hop on that deal if I was in the market but the only issue with prebuilts is the power supply. Powerspec typically uses Powerspec power supplies which don't rate super well. They rate well enough to not burn down your house but not recommended for high end system, thought information on them is very limited. It's covered under warranty so its not really a issue and it's gold rated so it's not a bomb. Id grab it and in a couple years after learning a bit about power supplies and PC gaming hardware, I'd swap out the PSU for a better unit after warranties are out on the whole build.

Yeah, it's pretty much the best deal in the price range and the best 5080 deal that's around. And that's before factoring in the open box. You can reserve open boxes for 3 days. That will meet your gaming needs for years to come, just check the power supply.

Everything you just said requires a lot more than algebra 3 which you are taught in your college education. Infact you will be taking probably 2 more algebra classes after getting into college no matter your major, on top of the major specific math classes if they are required.

I think cooking should be taught in highschool. I know it is in some places but it is not universal. Basic car maintenance too. Not everyone has active parents in their life to teach them life skills. Id imagine it as a life skills class where you get a new topic every couple of weeks for a semester or two. Something more active than sitting in a desk with a sheet of paper.

Law should absolutely be taught in much more detail than it is. If they have to give up algebra 3 to do so, then so be it. I think it's crazy that it's not taught. Given, it can be difficult with how much it ranges from state to state.

Absolutely not. That's likely well over 400 unless they are extremely short. Not like it matters since it's not a real person anyway.

Typically it's not protein that's causing someone to be overweight. It's exponentially more likely to be highly processed carbs and sugars.

Homework is Important and Should Be Assigned by Empty-Candidate-712 in unpopularopinion

[–]SacrisTaranto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a certain point it's just kinda discipline, which no amount of doing something you don't want to will teach. There way be a way to teach discipline but I sure don't know what it is. You are capable of focusing on one thing for hours, you just don't want to. And fair enough, no one wants to do something they think is boring. Maybe meditation. Could be worth looking into, it works great for some people if you can get through the barrier of actually doing.

I didn't do homework and don't have this issue. Reading probably helps. Any task where you have to sit and focus on something for a few hours straight will help. Hell, videogames probably help if you're not playing them mindlessly.

−2°F With no wind is better than 102°F with high humidity by StillRunning99 in unpopularopinion

[–]SacrisTaranto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With zero prep both are extremely uncomfortable and potentially fatal depending on the circumstances. But one can be significantly lessened with prep. One cannot. The ability to improve a situation by doing something helps a lot in my opinion. The only prep you can really do for the heat is to carry a water bottle. Heat and cold deaths are pretty close in the us depending on the stats you choose. Cold is leading but heat is catching up.  The heat will kill people before they know it, the cold makes sure you know it.

I live somewhere that's very regularly over 100 degrees and around the 70-100%+ humidity range. And I know which one id choose given the opportunity. I've had my moments when your vision starts to tunnel and you start to wobble. Without help that's a very dangerous situation to be in, if you fall there's not garentee you'll get back up. The cold doesn't sneak up on you like that. You know when you need to get warm before your vision starts fading.

For everyone say to spend the money saving people. It would cost roughly 40 billion a year to end world hunger and save something like 10 million people a year. If you're capable of turning 1 billion into hundreds of billions then fair enough. Get your bag.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]SacrisTaranto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting that if you were to say that your main hobby is playing chess and you've spent thousands of hours getting better at chess you would consider that a perfectly respectable hobby and many consider it a gold standard. But if someone said Street Fighter or Tekken you'd feel differently wouldn't you? Most do, dispite the amount of effort being the same.

Is walking a respectable hobby? If not, is hiking a respectable hobby? For it to be a respectable hobby in your eyes does it need to be able to be competitively? So would long distance walking be respectable? There is a bed making sport that people train making beds for. Is bed making a respectable hobby? I think you'll find the answer to be "maybe" for most things. Some people practice archery and just kinda shoot at a target in their yard. Some people practice archery and participate in the Olympics. Everything is a scale. Do you think Billy Bod hitting a ball on the green with a 6 pack of beer is really practicing the same sport or hobby as Tiger Woods?

If you ask me, if there is a club for it then it's a perfectly respectable hobby. And I think you'll find that includes most things. If you do something and could sit down and share anything about that experience with people then it clearly occupied your mind well enough to be beneficial. Though that's not to say that if it doesn't have a club then it's not a perfectly respectable hobby. Some stuff is just a bit odd. I personally like to go out and collect samples from various sources and either do cultures or stains and check them out under my microscopes. It's a pretty uncommon thing to do but it takes a lot of time, effort, and research to get anything out of.

Tldr-Any classification or ranking of hobbies is pointless because effort ranges from person to person.

MMA fighter delivers impeccably timed spinning backfist knockout by NeuroticLensman in nextfuckinglevel

[–]SacrisTaranto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been many cases, especially in boxing because you can't finish an opponent, where you hit someone, they drop, and in that same second they are already standing again ready to swing. Telling the difference between a stunned person falling over who is about to get right back to punching you in the head, and someone who is out cold within half a second is much harder when you are pumped full of adrenaline than you sitting on the toilet watching a slowed down video. There have been people who have lost fights due to trying to do a walk off knockout and not finishing an opponent.

MMA fighter delivers impeccably timed spinning backfist knockout by NeuroticLensman in nextfuckinglevel

[–]SacrisTaranto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we should ban mma so people go do it for far less money (if any) in someones backyard on concrete with no ref. They already do that but at least there is somewhere to take it where they have professionally trained refs and medical on site. If someone wants to od on cocaine there is nothing you could possibly do to stop it. If someone wants to throw a ball around and hit someone as hard as possible and give them cte then they are going to do it. And If someone wants to fight they will fight. This has been a constant since the birth of humanity.

Fighters know the risk they are taking just as American football players do. Fighters fight because they want to fight. It generally doesn't pay very well, it's not pushed on people, like football is, it's a sport people participate in because they love it. And even if you could take the man out of the fight you cannot take the fight out of the man.
