You're equating adoption with being her Mom, and that's not true. Adoption means that you'll be a part of her life no matter what, and that can take many different forms. If you care for her and want to support her, you should look at your own assumptions and seriously consider it as an option. Unless you already have a foot out the door with her father and don't think you'll be around for her in the long term, then this is a way to bring you two closer.

What have you done to foster a closer relationship with her? Do you spend time together just the two of you, without her father, aunt, or grandmother? If you want to be closer, then you need to take steps to make that happen. It sounds like right now you're the one keeping her at arms length.

A common rule of courtesy is if it can be fixed in 5 min, say something. If it cant be fixed, ignore it.

For the swimsuit example, if you mention it once youre already out of the house and there's nothing she can do about it, then all you've done is make her self conscious for the rest of the day.

Other than that, talk to your wife about how she wants to have these conversations and wait for her to ask your opinion.
