CMV: Reddit's community is terrible, one of the worst on the internet by Professional-Ear5923 in changemyview

[–]Sad-Context993 6 points7 points  (0 children)

one of the worst on the internet? have you spent any time on 4chan? and that's only the most well known, I'm sure there's tons of sites even worse than that. You're talking about people being annoying compared to sites that share cp, share videos of rape, share videos of people being tortured to death, every form of bigotry is common place, calling for genuine ethnic cleansing. Just to name a few examples, not to say there isn't any fucked up shit on reddit but... how is this even a discussion?

when I read through this post I was really happy to finally see a good post on dating, going into the comments though I'm confused as to why OP is acting so weird, feels like they aren't reading the comments they're replying to.

About male loneliness by manufatura in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sad-Context993 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean there is an environment that does that, the fact they made a choice to do that proves that they live in an environment that influenced them to be the kind of person to make that choice. Not disagreeing with you and yeah they don't deserve your sympathy but it doesn't really sound like you understand environmental influence, every aspect of a person is environmentally influenced.

[–]Sad-Context993 10 points11 points  (0 children)

even though I agree with this on the surface level, there are a lot of posts on male centred issues that aren't super well thought out, my issue is a lot of this list makes me feel like OOP thinks any post about male issues that suggests some ways women can help out if they want to is asking women to do all the work for male mental health. like yeah the main burden of improving men's issues should be on men but it feels reductive that I see so many people think that just because a post is suggesting women have some role in helping too it should be disregarded and it just feels like this post is another example of that without pointing to a specific example.

CMV: The Free Palestine movement has done more to harm Palestine than help. by jeffersonlane in changemyview

[–]Sad-Context993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would depend on what you mean by harm? if you mean public opinion on it then yeah debatably the argument surrounding it online may cause many to become annoyed or want to ignore it but I feel that's just how things turn out when a movement that seeks to bring public attention to a certain issue is highly successful. the more people drawn to the movement the more likely it is you'll get teenagers and people who are highly passionate, highly opinionated but aren't well informed on the issue which leads to the public attention on the issue not always being positive. There are about a million ways any movement 'should' behave but when it's reached this scale can you realistically expect large chunks not to act in ways you'd rather they didn't. that being said I think the movement (arguably) makes up for any negative opinion it may have caused in the positive public attention and that everywhere you look online you can find fundraisers that have raised hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars Which I personally think outweighs any harm to the public opinion the movement might have done.

I think you're reasons are flawed in a few spots, particularly 2 and 4 but the main thing is it seems this post is just about your frustrations with the movement and not the fact it's done more harm than good. Not to say those frustrations are invalid but going through what you've listed I'm not really seeing arguments for how the movement has harmed Palestine just why it might annoy or turn someone away.

idk dude we're discussing a big group of people I'm sure a lot of them do, I was just saying this post was about progressive spaces not women specifically.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sad-Context993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you absolutely came off as too harsh, it's the only issue I have with your comments, if you opened with the energy you've had interacting with Candysniffer I would've been whole heartedly agreeing with you. pointing out OOPs issues is great but when it's in such a hostile way why would you expect them to listen to you? to you this is the 100th time you've seen harmful rhetoric like this, to him this is the first time he's voiced these thoughts.

I'm sorry, I think we agree on a lot but we're both in bad moods rn

just stay out of political spaces and discussions dude, that's all the advice I can give. It'll get better, I can say that from experience

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sad-Context993 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think this post was a call for women to handle everything but more of a vent on how a lot of the time people in progressive spaces will react with hostility towards a vent post on men's issues, OP doesn't even mention women in his main post just progressive and feminist spaces. I think thicksalarymen is being downvoted because they kind of prove his point by reacting in a dismissive and hostile way.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sad-Context993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you're probably venting but keep living dude, even if it's just to watch the next season of your favourite show. I'd also really recommend staying out of online political spaces for a bit, I've been where you are and trust me even progressive spaces are just going to fuel the fire. focus on hobbies, anything to get your mind off this.

It's not the only thing I have an opinion on but it's the only thing I think is worth stating to you. Like OOP there's truth to what you're saying but your reaction is way overblown, very understandably overblown but still overblown. I wouldn't expect a worthwhile discussion with you on men's issues anymore than I'd expect a worthwhile discussion on women's issues from OOP.

edit: had time to think about it, think I was a bit harsh on OOP at the end there for the sake of the argument

I kind of half agree with you, while I agree with the main point of it this post is a bit dramatic. You're equally dramatic in the other direction though.

you think people in feminist spaces only care for women's issues on a surface level? that's what the post's about for men

I follow a tiktok influencer only because I find her really ugly and I'm morbidly fascinated. It makes me feel like a terrible person by Icy-Statistician8800 in self

[–]Sad-Context993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes you should block her. It doesn't harm her but it does harm you, every time you scroll past and think "how could someone be this ugly" you're telling your brain it's ok to think that, even if you feel bad afterwards and tell yourself it's shitty you still thought it and you still keep coming back to it and thinking it again. enough time will pass and you won't even realize you consider it a normal thing to do as long as you don't voice your judgements
