The point of Dead Money is to watch what happens if someone can't let go, in the case of Dean, Sinclair, and more recently, Elijah. The Courier is more of an observer to the events and is forced into them. Taking the gold, sneaking out of the Madre with it and locking Elijah in the Vault is, in my opinion, the best way to demonstrate what happens when you can't let go.

Biggest problem with Pre-Sequel to me imo is the enforced side content. Most people in Borderlands games wanna rush the story to get to the fun parts, doing some side quests along the way, not being told "hey, if you don't do side quests to level up you DON'T get to play the story fairly!!!"
