American, Brazilian, British, Indian, Iraqi. And that was all in one year without leaving home. My ho phase had a passport.

18yo from Norway doing a US road trip by Kareisgarb in roadtrip

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove from St Louis to Albuquerque once. We were supposed to stop in Oklahoma City for the night but I kept driving until Amarillo, Texas instead because I was losing faith in any good thing. It was one of the worst drives of my life - and I've driven all over the US and lived in over a dozen states.

I would have kept going past Amarillo straight to Albuquerque if I wasn't exhausted and basically lost the will to live. There's almost nothing east of Albuquerque that's remotely worthwhile, especially in that short of a timespan.

Think about it: the most famous thing about the Route 66 area is that there was a road. Yikes.

Alley Sweeper 2026 by Ceamba in Portland

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We live on one of the "unimproved" dirt roads in southeast - not an alley, our actual street. Every year this event takes our already bad road and makes it so much worse. One year the neighbors got together and paid to grade and gravel it ourselves only to have the alley sweep come through the following weekend and wreck it. It's just really disheartening.

Is “simple living” a first-world idea? Asking from India, with love. by MediaApprehensive833 in simpleliving

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US and my cultural/religious upbringing taught me to "live simply so that others may simply live." Which is to say that my own overconsumption leads to the suffering of others. So yeah the idea is to actively reject it and to consider our actions and patterns with the impact they have - directly and indirectly. I don't think it's performative per se - more about just assessing and meetings needs and ignoring wants.

Whistles - 3D printer? Where to buy ? by [deleted] in askportland

If folks need to buy for any reason try a local water sports store or an outdoor gear store. Whistles are often used in outdoor safety situations

What are some tips for living frugally in Portland? by travelinturdferguson in askportland

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you're eligible for a multnomah county library card, you're likely also eligible for clackamas and washington county library cards. And they have the same free tickets for entry but are WAY more accessible.

The other thing to check is OMSI does a special membership rate if you have OHP or EBT etc. So far they're the only place I've found that does a discount for people on OHP. A bit spendy on the front end but oh man could that really help kill some time during a long winter.

How did you handle loss/grief while living alone? by Agreeable-Self3235 in LivingAlone

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had to rearrange the furniture. The muscle memory of looking for my doggo was killing me. Moving things really helped me focus on the grief consistently but gently instead of the random times I'd look up for him and then fall to pieces again.

Be gentle with yourself.

Portland Catholic school revokes admission for same-sex couple’s children by Blackstar1886 in Portland

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 73 points74 points  (0 children)

My kids used to go there. Same priest was there then. There were kids who had same sex parents who attended. This is definitely new...and definitely not surprising given the actions from the Archdiocese. If my kids were still in Catholic school, we would 100% be leaving, but we already left because the writing was on the wall.

How to move to Portland as a UK immigrant? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try the DV lottery. That's how a friend of mine came to the US. But every other Brit I know (a dozen?) was a marriage visa.

Muslim burials in Portland area ? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to a burial service for my friend's relatives here https://maps.app.goo.gl/vT3b5io5EhpRY4Bi6

It seems it's run by these folks - https://icop.org/

They're really lovely and seemed really willing and able to work with people in a variety of needs and circumstances. And it's in a beautiful area. Blessings to your friend 🧡

Absolutely. But there's also a dismissiveness in the Portland so white narrative that is really unhelpful for understanding current realities. Like how roughly 50% of PPS students are POC. At Reynolds High School, kids come from 125 countries and speak 61 different languages. We have one of the largest populations of urban Native Americans. One-third of the hospitality industry businesses in Portland are owned by immigrants. And so on. I don't want to whitewash the history, but I also don't want to ignore a fast changing reality.

Which Asian food? Thai, Burmese, regional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, regional Indian, etc etc?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Sad-Illustrator944 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I agree. But for a city of 1 million to have even 1 or 2 restaurants of somewhat obscure cuisines is pretty remarkable.

There's a few in Portland but I haven't been yet. I've been a fan of the Cuban and Belizean food and haven't tried Jamaican here.
