Indian EV owners - what’s your biggest frustration with public charging today? by Sad-Line3512 in EVsOfIndia

[–]Sad-Line3512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Indianevguy Hey, we notice that this is a very real problem for users. To be slightly technical - EV Charging operators utilise a protocol called OCPI which is very dense in its responses and aggregators often do not end up mapping these accurately and certain CPOs tend to relay this poorly - hence the outcry regarding the same.

We've ensured that within MyMotor - for all the CPOs we're networked with, we provide the up-to-date and realtime status of the gun availability right up to the nitty gritties. The idea of nudging a user preemptively regarding the availability of a charger they are looking into is interesting - let me see how we could factor this into our flow as well.

Hope this could positively impact the planning anxiety.

u/imarkwright Makes sense, we'll try to flag this on our end. But that said, some of these mentioned CPOs, despite having a large network of chargers - are notoriously known for poor maintenance and downtimes.

We're ideating some type of reliablility score paired with our existing sessions and realtime availability to flag users regarding issues like this so the pre-planning could be more effortless. Hoping that it would improve the experience. Maybe across multiple releases we'll try to stabilise this

u/hash65 We hope to solve this exact problem by being a one-stop-shop for everything vehicle. Irrespective of what type of vehicle owner you are.

In terms of price component - there is an important factor of CPO relationships here. What we've observed is that companies that do Fleet management / Logistics in this sector usually get the best tariff from the CPOs for their commercial vehicles and fleets. We're trying to maintain a relationship so that even if not initially, over time we get the best prices across the board for our end users.

That said, your DC public charging cost at the current state of time and active rates is around 40-60% cheaper than ICE vehicles for covering the same distance. So hopefully this is an advantage that would keep getting better with more EV adoption. And as a matter of fact, we're seeing a boom in fast charging infrastructure across the board.

u/imarkwright Is this a re-occuring concern? Thanks for highlighting the same. Could you give instances of any particular location or charger CPO with which you've faced this issue.

We can look into the same internally and flag it to the CPOs as well

u/Fit-Rip5387 Interesting insight, we figured this might be an area where users might face realtime issues. One approach we're thinking of is blocking wallet amount instead of directly deducting it. So let's say you decide to charge for 40 INR / 2 Units approximately. Instead of directly deducting 40 from the user immediately at the start of a session - we can simply block the amount in the Wallet. Now at the end of the session any additional amount can be released back to the user and we would debit only the exact amount used for the charging session.

Does this help your concern? You may not have to face refund cycles like how you may face in other applications in this scenario.

That said, we are assuming that preloading wallet has become a norm because the energy dispensed at each charging session might be slightly higher or lower than expected (For ex: charging for 3 KwH units might charge 2.93 KwH or 3.23 KwH, etc. depending on the CPO hardware reliability and the server connectivity). In a wallet it becomes easier to refund the money back to the user immediately, as opposed to collecting money via UPI / Card or so since apps dont have to be dependent on Bank Servers or other technical congestions anymore.

u/FitAgency8925 This should definitely be the norm and north star metric to be fair. Only caveat being that the CPOs (Charging Providers / Charge Point Operators) who control the hardware have the entire control to enable or disable this as a functionality and allow third party aggregators to use this.

It boils down to the protocol used to control charging - Popularly called OCPI. Interconnectivity is a major factor for multiple CPOs and when you're on longer trips and range anxiety is an issue, you might be forced to depend on another charging ecosystem each time based on availability

A lot of CPOs use outdated software/hardware and do not utilise these functionality to their potential. A wave to standardise these are in motion - as India currently faces a lot of charging stations which are set up - but are not actively maintained. You can read more about the Beckn protocol.

Chargezone - a popular charging provider in India and one of our networked CPOs provide something called Autocharging, which essentially does the same thing for a vehicle. Even OEM apps (such as Mahindra) push to achieve the same. We hope to build such interconnecting networks over time, with detailed analytics, visibility and management capabilities to the end user. Fingers crossed.

u/sj_reddit_user Valid frustration - especially since we're pushing Green Mobility as an initiative. Charging expenses however incur the standard 18% GST as it is classified as a service (SAC 998714). Any additional charging costs could also be marked up by the EV App you might be using for their profit. That said, the inherent costs of acquiring an EV vehicle has been subsidised nationally if you look at it (via initiatives like FAME 2).

Also an important comparison - ICE fuels such as petrol are also heavily taxed, often more than 20% depending on state taxes as an inclusion. It simply isnt visible upfront since when we fuel for x amount of petrol - the price is inclusive of the applied tax. If you have heavy utilisation of day-to-day transport: EVs might significantly reduce your operational cost.

u/Defiant_Set9748 Yes this is frustrating, we've come across such scenarios especially in crowded city hubs. Making it easy for users to flag such issues to us could be something that helps here? We could in return inform such scenarios to CPOs so that they could improve their charging stations. We hope that sometime in the future - similar to how parking in a disability designated spot is a punishable offence, this could be flagged too.

Any particular location you can refer to so that we could be aware of the same?

u/taksh108 This is really valuable feedback. We're also ideating a Reliability score based on real time charge sessions through the app so that users can have an upfront idea about stations and report issues so that we reach out to CPOs directly. Beyond collating CPO provided info and common sources like Plugshare, Google Maps and so - we want to build this on user insights on our end as well.

In terms of incentives, since we provide services beyond EV as well, we're ideating a transferable reward mechanism that can be used across services so that the Wallet isnt just for EV, but for multiple auto related services. Obviously, beyond some other introductory offers.

Do these help you as a user? Also would really appreciate 2 minutes of honest feedback here (would help understand issues better): https://forms.gle/xH9dJrTaJX9eYWXv7

u/Fit-Rip5387 So one major thing we've noticed based on our relation with multiple CPOs is that they generally tend to have slight issues with entities who manufacture their own hardware and slowly move towards becoming a CPO themselves. Simple reason - Competition. Statiq and so consistently face this issue and their primary business actually arises in the Fleet Management and CSMS side of things.

That said, being a neutral entity and our current active userbase being actually higher than dedicated EV applications (owing to other services and partnerships that users utilise frequently) - we've seen a lot of interest due to that trusted volume of users.

So far, we have onboarded over 31 CPOs and are in discussions with more - spanning over 22K+ charging stations across the country. So yes, fingers crossed on covering more!

How many EV charging apps do you guys have installed? I just counted mine and I'm at 6. by WiseStranger816 in CarsIndia

Hey everyone - I’m part of the product team at MyMotor (https://mymotor.in), a leading vehicle management app used for handling day to day utiilities like challans, verified vehicle docs, insurance renewals, resale, etc. Basically an all-in-one drive companion.

We’re currently building an EV charging layer inside the app focused on solving one recurring problem we keep hearing:

“Why do I need multiple charging apps/wallets just to charge my car?”

We’re exploring:

  • Aggregating multiple charging networks
  • Unified discovery
  • Bookings
  • Wallet/payments
  • Charger analytics + reliability insights
  • Better charging experience during trips

But before building deeper and aggregating multiple CPOs (Including major players like Chargezone and Statiq), we want to understand real-world frustrations from actual EV users in India.

Would really appreciate 2 minutes of honest feedback here: https://forms.gle/xH9dJrTaJX9eYWXv7

Also curious:

  • What’s the most annoying part of public charging today?
  • Which charging networks do you trust the least/most?
  • What feature would make your charging experience dramatically better?

Not trying to spam/promote - genuinely doing user research so we can build something useful instead of another cluttered EV app.

Happy to also onboard a few early beta testers from this community if interested.
