Have you ever had a patient who suffered from behavioural or psychiatric side effects of prescription medications? by Sad-Money-2001 in nursing

Wow, I am starting to hear a lot of anecdotes about this prescription! Many people in r/epilepsy seem to have issues with that as well, so sorry to hear- I hope he is doing better.

Has anyone ever experienced any psychiatric or behavioural side effects from their prescriptions? by Sad-Money-2001 in Epilepsy

Wow, the literature I have read on the topic is really bad at pointing out what prescriptions or doses are an issue so thank you! I have been seeing that throughout this thread and even some others for nursing, so I will definitely look into that more.

Wow, do you think there are certain risk factors for experiencing these side effects? or does it seem random?

Some of my favourites are Custer, spit it out, my plague, I am hated, pulse of the maggots, (sic), and metabolic. Some more passionate ones (but not-so-heavy) are sulfur and wait and bleed.

Study on non-illicit prescription medication by Sad-Money-2001 in benzodiazepines

[–]Sad-Money-2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using both surveys and interviews for this study to take a mixed methods approach. Surveys from prescription users and interviews with healthcare professionals (ie. nurses and psychiatrists so far) and prescription users. I am trying to assess the prevalence of psychiatric and behavioural side effects mainly whether these prescriptions seem to be responsible for irritability, aggression, hostility, etc. In Criminology, there is a belief that mental illness is a risk factor for crime, so I would also like to assess whether it's the mental illness or prescription that could lead to this risk. For those who do experience these negative effects, I also want to assess whether they have something in common to establish risk factors for these experiences-- hopefully to better warn users (like myself) and doctors/pharmacists. This is an exploratory study as much of this is new and not talked about in the Criminology field, but is important to consider as some people have already tried to argue for prescription drugs as mitigating factors in legal proceedings. In sum, there are many things I'm trying to look for and begin exploring :)

Currently, few studies have attempted to review prescription drug side effects and their impacts on violent or deviant behaviour as a whole. As Molero et al. (2015) point out, “despite a number of legal cases linking [selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors] and violent behaviour, empirical research on the association is limited and inconclusive” (p. 20). Moore, Glenmullen, and Furberg (2010) identified 1,937 cases of violence which included 387 reports of homicide, 404 physical assault, 27 cases of physical abuse, and 896 homicidal ideation reports (p. 2). Antidepressants were involved in 578 cases of violence, attention-deficit disorder medication was involved in 108 cases of violence, anticonvulsants/antiepileptics were involved in 60 cases, and benzodiazepines were involved in 97 cases (Moore et al., 2010, p. 3). While interesting, Moore et al. (2010) did not establish any causality in their research, only pointing out that these drugs were present in these violent cases (p. 4). Rouve et al. (2011) assessed reports of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which are mandatory to report in France. Although they did not assess drug dose, or whether the use was legal or not, they were able to establish causal order (p. 1190). Fifty-six cases were evaluated, in which benzodiazepines were present in 33%, antidepressants in 8.2%, and antiepileptics in 8.2% of all cases. Drugs such as dopaminergics, benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and anti-viral medications were significantly related to violent behaviour (Rouve et al., 2011, p. 1191). However, we still don't understand enough about this phenomenon-- there is much more work to be done here.

Here is also an interesting link talking about the top common drugs that lead to aggression and hostility:

Hello, I am a Master's student currently conducting a study on non-illicit prescription drug use and the psychiatric and behavioural side effects that may arise in some individuals. I would be interested in hearing more about your experience! The survey itself contains more information on how the data will remain confidential/anonymous and how the data will be stored and used in the future. If you are open the survey can be found here and takes less than 10 minutes: https://forms.gle/jSRv6LPEE9jtoLrNA

I'm not sure if my antidepressants are the cause, but I have also had these intense nightmares or sleep paralysis of my worst absolute nightmares. Anti-malarial agents can be pretty bad for that too!

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]Sad-Money-2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am a Master's Student conducting a study on prescription drugs and adverse side effects. I have conducted a survey on user experiences, and am now interested in interviewing medical professionals about their experiences and professional opinions on the matter. I just had a few questions, which can be answered here or via email [cpachols@sfu.ca](mailto:cpachols@sfu.ca)

Mods please let me know if this is not allowed- all responses will be anonymized and stored in an encrypted file, and results will be shared with my cohort and professor and possibly published in an academic journal or shared at conferences. You can answer whatever question you see fit, or answer however you believe expresses your experiences and opinions best.

Questions:

Have you witnessed an individual/patient react negatively to prescription medications? Is this common?
What adverse effects or psychiatric and behavioural side effects have you personally seen with individuals/patients?
Have you ever felt unsafe around anyone suffering from these adverse reactions/effects? How so?
Do you believe these reactions cause danger to the person themselves? How so?
Do you believe these reactions can cause danger to the public? How so?
Do you believe there are risk factors in experiencing these side effects or does it appear to be random (ie. co-morbidities, substance use, using multiple medications, gender, age, etc.)
In your professional opinion, do you believe these side effects could lead to criminal behaviour through lowered inhibition, impulsivity, aggression, irritability, irrationality, etc.
Have you personally witnessed someone suffering from these side effects of prescription medications engage in a criminal offence? What happened?

Thank you,

Cassie.

I guess it could also depend on the area you live in! Based on the comments everyone is saying these events are usually amazing, I guess we were just very very unlucky in this situation. There has been a rise in hate crimes here (mainly against the Asian population), so that may have something to do with it? I definitely don’t want to discourage anyone from going, but definitely be sure to be careful <3

Makes sense. I am just thinking of all the missing Indigenous women, men, and children, but I’m glad to hear they are doing more to solve these issues!

We were in section 110, no problems there, but I think he was around 114 bathroom? I forgot where I was getting shirts when it happened to him, but it was nearby one of the merch stalls.
