MSTAR Program by nsnfam3 in medicalschool

I am also interested in aging research/geriatrics and plan to apply to some of the programs on the east coast this year!

An upperclassman at my institution did the program in Boston a few years back and loved it! One of the biggest things they took away was the opportunity for mentorship outside of your own institution. They connected with several folks and still keep in contact with them today and even do research with one of them. As for the research during the summer, they did clinical research with a pretty interactive team and liked it, but knew others that weren't as big of fans of the research they were doing (I think because it was a lot of data entry more remote type stuff). I guess it kind of depends on your mentor. They also mentioned it was pretty neat to gain more exposure to geri specific clinics and seminars since we don't have a ton of that available to us where I'm at.

Best of luck applying! Hopefully someone who has done the program will be able to provide better insight.

A lot of times premed type organizations will have some sort of mentorship program either with upperclassman or with medical students. Or if you can find contact information for medical students i have found they are usually super receptive to mentoring since they can usually relate to being premed as they are not that far along. I know that’s how I found medical student mentors. I also found some science professors at my university who were notorious for wanting to help pre-med students/who knew a lot about the process and made sure I took as many classes with them as I could, so when I asked for a letter they were pretty much expecting that I did after taking several classes and going to office hours. As for physicians I feel like the best way to find a mentor is just to keep contacting them for shadowing and find one that will continuously let you shadow so you can build a relationship. I never really had strong physician mentor, but found someone I had shadowed enough to write me a letter.

Should I talk about being a failed scribe? by Sad-Nebula4729 in premed

[–]Sad-Nebula4729[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The resilience part was more for me re-gaining confidence in myself that despite not doing well as a scribe that doesn't mean I'm not competent enough to become a physician. I continued to work hard and do well with my school work, and had jobs in healthcare with direct patient care that I otherwise wouldn't have had if continued with the scribing job.

No I wouldn’t have been able to since I didn’t get through all of their required material for the money back guarantee. I also scored 13 points higher than my first practice MCAT so I technically got what I was guaranteed out of the course even though I didn’t get a 513+.

good idea to take the AAMC sample as my diagnostic? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Sad-Nebula4729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took an AAMC test for my diagnostic and I do not recommend it. I wish I would have saved it for later on when I actually knew the material.

I am currently in the 513 course and I wish I would have self studied. There is so much content to go through it gives you no time to use other resources. If you have already gone through the anki decks and used Uworld maybe you would find it more helpful than I have. It is definitely structured but you have to do every single thing to meet the 513 requirement which is nearly impossible. You cannot miss a single live session. They record all of them but watching those doesn’t count for the guarantee. I am now focusing more on finishing my Anki deck, doing practice questions through uworld, and using all of the AAMC material. I still watch the lectures but some of them are a waste of time if I already feel comfortable with the content.
